In the latest attack on Christianity, the U.S. government has banned the flag-folding recitations at all 125 national cemeteries. The banning came as the result of one complaint! The situation is similar to that in which one person removed prayer from schools.
This article from The Associated Press explains the situation:
Complaints about religious content have led to a ban on flag-folding recitations by Veterans Administration employees and volunteers at all national cemeteries.
At thousands of military burials, VA volunteers have folded the American flag 13 times and recited the significance of each fold to survivors. The 11th fold glorifies "the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” The 12th glorifies "God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost."
Citing a need for uniformity, the National Cemetery Administration has prohibited unpaid VA volunteers as well as employees from conducting the recital at all 125 national cemeteries.
American Legion attorney Rees Lloyd calls it "another attempt by secularist fanatics to cleanse any reference to God."
Following one complaint, the Veterans Administration has made anti-Christian bigotry the law of the land. The U.S. government has bowed to pressure from one radical anti-Christian secularist. Allowed to stand, the action by the Veterans Administration, in essence, means that anti-Christian bigotry is now the accepted and approved law of the land.

Kinda makes you wonder what on earth people are thinking.
We no longer have prayers in our schools, no Christmas trees in Federal government buildings, no Christmas plays in the schools, and I just read in this morning's paper that some groups would like our laws changed to allow the scattering of cremated ashes in our lakes and rivers.
Wonder how far we'd get in some of these countries if we moved there and then demanded all of their customs be changed to suit our way of life.
Seems to me people come to your country and to ours because life where they were wasn't so great. So why on earth do they want to change our great countries into replicas of their own.
Getting of soap box now - but still damned mad to see all of our treasured customs going down the tube

This is true then? Yikes.
Most of you know that my religious beliefs dovetail nicely with Christopher Hitchens but stuff like this, school prayer, nativity scenes and the like don't don't bother me. Most of the time, it keeps things a little saner.
Stupid.
Charlie.... who will be even more tolerant when todays Christian ranters stop telling me that God's number one priority is to lower taxes.

I may live in the arse end of nowhere, but RAF Sculthorpe was just down the road from me, a USAF base. When growing up we had American friends and I can remember watching the folding of the flag on a few occaisions, and it appeared to be really important to the families and servicemen, now I know it was and still is.
My point being, If the President is christian, and most of yr government is christian, WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY MESSING WITH THIS????

Is this according to religious preference? I went to two millitary funerals this summer and it happened (flag folding) at both but both were Christian funerals... I think you should be able to request this if you have a Christian funeral.

This is one of those things that are the result of too much yakking. If Christian fundamentalists would shut up and leave the rest of the country alone...like they used to....they would be left alone. It's the bible-thumping stirrer-uppers that are responsible for the backlash.

Because our Constitution is under attack from both liberals and conservatives Paul.
Each time one side pisses on an amendment or whatever, it gives the other side license to piss on the one THEYdon't like.
This is very clearly un Constitutional. If a family wants some religious aspect of their dead loved one performed...it is absolutely their RIGHT to have it part of their personal ceremony.
Our Constitution is supposed to guarantee "freedom of religion". That means as long as I am practicing my religion and the Gooberment is not forcing others to follow suit...I am free to do as I please.
That is how it is supposed to work. You are free to practice as you wish and the Govt. remains "neutral"
Proof that this action is more religion bashing from those who want to pee on our Constitution and how our gutless Govt officials wont take a stand for what is Constitutional...just that simple.
Sure, some of this may come from people who think religious fundamentalists are annoying...and often they are. But, we have freedom of speech...supposedly. Anyone can be as annoying as they wish, even if I don't like it. They can get as preachy as they want,,,, I'll just ignore them.
The real crime is when things like this happen. The Constitution is compromised !!!!
To somehow justify desecrating our Constitution because a group says thing you don't like, is just plain wrong.
The fact that most are Christians is not really a factor in a Constitutional sense.
It doesn't matter who the majority is when it comes to Constitutional law. If it did, we would not even need it. We would just take a vote on our rights. Fortunately this is not the law.
If it was, I am sure the idiots we have here would ruin things....even worse then they have already.
If, for instance, the National Cemetery's demanded people fold the flag and follow some religious procedure, THAT would be a violation of The Constitution.
As I read it, INDIVIDUAL families are being denied their right to have the volunteers fold the flag while saying words that have a religious connotation.
See, if a family doesn't want this done they can refuse.
The VA claiming it is for "uniformity" is ridiculous.
By preventing the volunteers from providing the family's who want it, I believe they are being denied religious freedom.
Uniformity!??!? WTF, we can have it both ways. What happened to "equal protection under the law?" I do not read where families cant just do it themselves...so I suppose that is an option.
I really haven't noticed religious people being any more vocal than they ever were here. In fact the maliciousness I see is more the anti-religion groups like the ACLU. The ACLU threatens to sue INDIVIDUALS to take down the nativity scene in their own damn yard cause some ACLU jackass can see it from the roadway.
Last time I checked, I don't remember a church threatening to sue people if they didn't join their way of thinking.
Either way, what bothers me is the malicious and intolerance some people have for each other.
Why would someone be offended to have someone say "Merry Christmas" to them !?!?
If you are Jewish and tell me "Happy Hanukka" I would take that as something friendly. I wouldnt hire a lawyer to sue you for mental anguish
All of this nitpicking only serves to make us all less free. If people would only be a little more tolerant towards each other, I think this would be a better place to live.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

You got it right there Dave, it's the few maniacs on each side of the equation who manage to ruin things for the huge majority in the middle. It's a very difficult thing to fight though, simply because, by virtue of their one sided, blinkered view of things, these extremists believe that they are absolutely right and simply cannot see any one elses point of view. We see the same thing, world wide, relating to many issues, gun control, environmental issues, religous tolerance etc.
