Hydrocarbons Anyone?

I often wondered if the factories in this town were the cause of my CH. The following is from an email from a friend who is an engineer and is trying to help me get to the bottom of this:
(btw the plant he mentions, I lived one block away from when I went chronic in '98, and I grew up 6 blocks away from. I know reside 8 blocks away.)

from the email:

Ok, I've been reading on CH.  check this out from
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_headache
Triggers
Nitroglycerin
(glyceryl trinitrate) can sometimes induce cluster headaches in
sufferers in a manner similar to spontaneous attacks. Ingestion of
alcohol is recognized as a common trigger of cluster headaches when a
person is in cycle or susceptible.

Exposure to hydrocarbons
(petroleum solvents, perfume) is also recognized as a trigger for
cluster headaches.

Some patients have a decreased tolerance to heat,
and becoming overheated may act as a trigger. Napping causes a headache
for some sufferers. The role of diet and specific foods in triggering
cluster headaches is controversial and not well understood.

DUDE - the coke plant takes raw coal - and heats it up to the point all
the hydrocarbons come leaking out, leaving behind the dried out coal
that is used in the blast furnace at the steel mill.  All those
hydrocarbons are turned into tar and stuff and sold, and the other stuff is
partially burned in the yellow flame - but that is a very inefficient
flame and lots of the hydrocarbon gets away.  all those smells by the plant
are the various hydrocarbon leaks in their ancient equipment.  Its
exactly the same kinda situation as carpet cement, which is petroleum
hydrocarbon solvent.  And spray cans these days have pure hydrocarbons in
 them instead of chloro-flurocarbons.

So, I am thinking it is time to GTFOD. We passed by the plant the other day on the way to St Louis. I wound up having a severe CH in his truck and he had to bring me back to Granite to hit my o2, as the Frova was not kicking in.

This is all new info to me concerning the hydrocarbons, but makes alot of sense.
This town is also known for raining metal particles from time to time.

where to go from here,
Carl D Hydrocarbon consumer

* I have to add, he was searching for what may trigger a CH through carpeting glue, as anytime we did a glue-down job back in the day, my boss would look at my eyes, see if coming on, and would tell me to go ride it out in the van. Eventually, he wouldn't let me go with them to glue-downs cause I always got hit.

Hi Carl,

I grew up in GC, so I'm familliar with the "raining of black metal sparkles"..................they ruined the paint on my car, leaving pitted marks all over it.

I moved out of GC in 2000 and didn't get ch until Mach of 2006, so I can't blame the steel mill for that.

I recommend getting the hell out of GC.

Any petroleum distillate was always a trigger for me. Gasoline, Kerosene, paint thinner, acetone (not really a hydrocarbon) turpentine, perfume, certain flowers and incense------major triggers Carl.

Wouldn't it be cool if you went from chronic to episodic just by moving?  Good luck Carl...

Hi Carl,

It sounds like your CH is being triggered and made worse by the environment you are in. I think its worthwhile for you to move away if you can, it may help make your CH better.

However, I dont think they are the cause of your CH though. Because if they are, everyone else living in the area would be developing CH too.

Hugs and painfree wishes

DAMN ya Annette!!! LOL !!!

Ya beat me to it!!!  When I read Carl's post, that was the first thought that came to my mind.

BUT, that being said, Carl, I think you ARE sensitive to the fumes, and it very well may be a trigger to you ... I know it would be hard, but maybe is IS time to look at options AWAY from there!

Good luck, buddy!
