So I hired a guy the other day, He swore up and down that he could pee clean, pass a criminal history check, and had a valid DL. I needed someone badly and he was experienced so I let him start the same day I interviewed him. Day 2 (yesterday) I had to fire him because his criminal history showed a felony theft and possession conviction. Plus his drivers license was suspended, then today his piss test results came back dirty. Good help is hard to find...............If you knew you couldn't pass these things, would you waste my time and money??????????

He still earned money for 1-2 days I suppose. I know he lied but at least he was trying to work which is more than can be said for alot - I'm not condoning him just trying to find something positive from the experience for you!

| You'd think he would be able to pull off at least 1 of the 3 requirements. How pathetic of a loser is he. BTW Matt do make them do those things for insurance reasons or personal reasons?

Insurance reasons, plus there are requirements for entry onto the facility. Would you want a thief, drug addict, with a suspended license running a locomotive inside a munitions plant, with access to lots of small and large things that go BOOM? Hell I'm surprised they let me.......

Good help IS hard to find everywhere. I'm just glad I took tomorrow off so I don't have to be there for the "going away lunch" for Gale. (I don't know if I could keep my mouth shut and be nice) Be glad fireing is so easy there. Steve was a bad hire, he's a brainless wonder. (What central WI born and raised 35 year old [supposedly professional] man walks around with a George Harrison perma tan, daddy's suit jackets that hang on him like a potato sack and calles everybody Dude?) Then to top it off he's got this whiney little peeon voice that grates on your last nerve. But Mommy and Daddy's money gets him by. Don't piss off community benefactors. Sorry I went on a rant. Didn't mean to hoist your thread Matt. Back to regularly scheduled programming.

| I hear ya. I have a flooring company and the union is making the installers piss. Do you know how hard it is to find a floor guy that don't at least smoke weed. I have been in the business for over 20 years and all the good installers party. Oh well there will be alot of rehab going on. Dave

Laying carpet and vinyl was my very first job. I still have my tools, even my power stretcher. I have fallen back on that many times over the years. Started out at 25 Cents a yard at age 13. I worked for a family friend.

Yeah Matt....we have piss tests as well. It got to the point where the company would make potential employees pay for their own test, then reimburse them as soon as they passed. It was reasonable to do so since they were warned in advance that they had to be clean. Why take it if you know you are dirty eh? 10 a week would come in and piss dirty. Each test was costing us something like $45 It is not a cliche' without truth. Good help is very hard to find. I personally dont see a problem with a guy relaxing after work with a joint any more than with a beer or two. But thats a different subject. In answer to your question: I think some people think the golden seal root, 30 gallons of water (most effective), cranberry juice, eye of newt or whatever they take will fool the tests. Others just give it a try to see if they can skate by the test. Either way, the test is pretty damn sensitive to most drugs and you are likely NOT going to fool it. Cheers, Dave

My point is that it doesn't matter if they pass the drug tests, there are still bad hires. It's then cororate policy as to how to handle them. Example: I've never had to write a personal review in my life, ad I was placed on a 90 review because I didn't write an "acceptable review" of myself. Well sheeash. I'm 40 something, and I'm supposed to know this shit? So I did alot of research into how to write a "self assessment". Went through the new revised meeting with flying colors. It's only about selling your self. Prostituting yourself to the corporation.

Hey Dave, My Dad had a tile, carpet, linoleum and marble company for about 30 years....hard work it is indeed. Gotta ask you, how are your knees holding up? Between the carpet stretcher kickin' and tile installations jobs, Dad and my brother probably had more knees tapped than anyone I have ever known. Hazzard of the trade...bummer!

| That was 20 years ago lol, we put tile down at a dealership in Atlanta then the next job was a motel, I thought I was rolling in the money.......... To bad they all weren't that easy, I'd probably still be laying it, if my knees held up that is......may hit you up for a job someday.......always leave your options open, never burn bridges, and keep an eye on the possibilities........

| I can pass the 3 tests, no drugs without Rx, no criminal history, and clean drivers license. I don't live in TX and I guess you guys have a tough non-smoking policy.... Any relocation package? I might want to drive a choo choo. I used to drive an "n" gauge train set, does that qualify me as experienced.... Just a thought, Ray (edited for typo)

One of the reasons I started my own company was the way I look, I would never even get to the drug test stage. They would just look at me and say "Sorry, no more openings" no matter how many years I have been doing that specific job. I have not done any (but CH) drugs in 18 years and damn proud of it! 15 years ago I said fuck it I will do my own thing, borrowed money for a welder and a saw. Got some help from my high school tech teacher to start an account at a metal supply joint and its all good now. Five years before that I got hired to do drywall (I didnt know how to do it) and within six months I was under bidding the guy that hired me and making cash over fist. If you want it you will fucking get it! My old man always said that if you want it your way, do it your way........RIP Dad!

When I was in manufacturing management, and had to do the hiring and firing, I discovered something. If I needed to hire a machine operator, it usually took me 8 to 10 people before I finally got a good one. Too many people are shocked that when you hire them, and agree to give them a paycheck, they actually have to WORK or be PRODUCTIVE in order to continue to receive that paycheck! Imagine that! Or, maybe I was just an a$$hole, to expect work for the money I give them ... Chuck

Matt, sorry about that kind of experience... What comes to me, I have been trying to find a job for few years now. Part-time, summer, full-time. Tried, applied, never heard anything, got to the interview part, heard that I had talent, but only got hired to do telemarketing (and I'm not good at that). Back in here, jobs are scarce. Everyone demands for a degree, experience and all sorts of other skills. Even the local McDonald's has turned me down - at the city of 40.000 students (and 80.000 inhabitants), they have plenty to choose from. My mistake? I decided to follow my passion and study journalism. It never occured to me that after that I cannot get another kinds of jobs if the journalism ones would not work out... Still, if I could go back in time and change all that, I bet I would choose the same. My passion is writing; I can't get over that. All I've ever wanted do is just that; write, write and again write. Quote:My old man always said that if you want it your way, do it your way........ |
| Jonny, that is a great quote. Had I followed that earlier, perhaps things were different... who knows. Sanna

When I went to work for this company I averaged 70 to 80 hours OT every check, bi monthly. That was the only way I could afford to pay my bills. The last 4 guys I had hired couldn't make it the first ninety days without missing an average of 4 days. I have called in only once in the last 5 years. That was because I had a port in my arm for DHE. To me that is like paying a days wages to take a day off.....I can't afford that....

Got a job for a guywith a weak back and a weaker mind? I can pass all three, in fact had to pee in the bottle this morning on a random. My problem has been since I had to go back to working for the other guy is tht I am old enough tht I can't afford to take an entry level job, and due to the back injury from the car wreck 4 yrs ago can't do the work I'm good at other than drive. I don't really want to get back into a big truck due to back probs, etc., but with the increasing cost of fuel it is getting harder and harder to make it with what I'm doing now. Jerry
