Ok here goes... Toby had his cast recasted and you knew that whole scenario... he got his cast redone in 5 minutes after the fancy cast fell off (the one put on with sedation and a sleepover and a large fine at the end of it all) and the doc said it was coming off in 2 weeks anyway... so 2 weeks comes around the dog is going crazy trying to get the thing off so Dave and I get permission and take the cast off the dog... Now the vet is saying we should xray it again ... 2 weeks ago she said it was healed and we were takin the cast off in 2 weeks... Now shes saying we need to xray it again... How much would an xray change in one week?  He had such a sore from the 3rd bandage change.  He is limping but happy to be out of that cast.  He is acting like his normal self although licking the sores on the top of his leg and he will lift the leg while standing.  It looks skinny but it isnt stopping him from jumping up on the couch...(don't worry I'm not letting him stay up there so he can jump down and further damage the leg)   In a small dog leg break what is the proper care to take after the bandages are off?... when I asked 2 weeks ago if he would need some sort of brace or bandage for support she said NO... now they seem to think if it isnt healed it may need another brace what do you think????????
ps they have me by my emotions here I don't want to do the wrong thing... but with imatrex costs and zomig etc... we're broke... I can't afford another penny going into this doggy right now...When should he stop limping and when will I know if its a problem?????

They are soaking you, Ree.

My cat cut tendins in the back leg and they wanted to put a new cast on every week for months after the surgery. After the forth cast (At $75 a shot) I just tore the cast off and that was five years ago.....shes fine.

No limp, no nothing...just a normal cat.

thanks Jonny man do I love youuuuuuuu!!!!

Dave called me on the cell upset to say that he couldnt take the dog tomorrow and I'm working so I said wait why are we taking the dog, his cast is off... so we decided together to give the dog a break and not traumatize him any further.  So when I called to cancel at first they were all nicey nice to me and when I cancelled  it was  "WELL THE DOCTOR SAID... BLAH BLAH BLAH... " they really got ya...I told the girl to have the doctor call if it would be detrimental to the dog and if it was absolutely necessary... then the girl called back to say Well the doctor said if you don't want to, we can't make you, but we really should see if there are any further fractures... just something to put the glimmer of doubt in your mind... I told her we were going to give it a week and if we felt we needed their assistance we would call...
Mannnnnnn... I tell ya.

Jonny,
As far as cats go...one of the docs I used to work for said if you put 2 cat bones in one room together they would heal.  Tis true, but cat's ain't litte bouncy dogs Smiley

Ree,
Keep Toby very VERY quiet, NO jumping UP or DOWN, no running around, leash walks ONLY, no chasing cats, no playing, crated while you are gone and don't worry about having another xray done.  As long as he is not causing anymore trama to his leg, it can only get better.  And he is very young and he will heal fast.  Give that 2 to 4 weeks more (remember, he has no other support for his bone to heal and could RE break it very easily, then you'd be back to square ONE!) and then increase his activity slowly.
His leg looks smaller right now cause it's been squished for so long, his hair is all smoothed out and his muscles are a little bit atrophied from lack of use.  It'll be normal looking shortly.
And what Jonny said.

Also, no falling from heights Smiley
Have fun!
Mast
This is precisely the reason I have a big dog that I can step on and trip over and won't break anything, LOL!!

If the vet said that the cast can come off, then it doesn't need additional support, just gotta keep him super quiet.  No doggy downers over the counter but you could try benedryl (same as knockin our kids out for the nite).  You have to give him 1mg per pound.  So if he is 12 pounds, which I think he's smaller, ain't he?  Then he would take 1 - 12mg tab of benedryl.  If he's 6 pounds, he'd take half tablet.  He can have 1dose every 8 hours.
Make sure it is JUST diphenhydramine and not benedryl with a bunch of other crap.  You can even get childrens liquid benedryl.

If you wanted to you can get him a multivitamin at the pet store, but I think as long as he is eating a good puppy food, he should be fine there.

My consultation fee:
If the convention is in Oregon next year, you and Dave have GOT to come!!!!!!  Smiley
Miss you guys,
Mast

Should I take 1mg of Benadryl for every pound of me? That would be a damn lot of Benadryl.

Thanks very much... he looks sad tonight but I think he is sore he is favoring the bottom of his foot (the pads) and his toe nail... the way they set his foot he was standing on his toe nails... it was just painful to watch... amazing how they adapt... I have occasionally given him a 1//2 baby asprin... I will remember about the benadryl if need be...

love ya... I wish they would change that weekend of the convention... I would love to see Oregon
