Goodbye for now old girl

After bringing my family 13 years of love and devotion I had to put our Golden Abby to sleep last night. My heart is broken. Bad back legs, liver cancer and failing kidneys all conspired to bring an end to a long and happy life. I just couldn't stand to see her suffer any longer. Most of her dignity had been stripped. She was no longer that white streak flying in circles around the kids in the back yard. All she could manage now was her ever-present smile and an echo of that puppy still reflected in her eyes.
I put the word out Friday night. She spent the weekend being loved by everyone in the family. They each found some time from their busy lives to come and say goodbye to an old friend. I hadn't seen her that happy in a while. Everyone took turns lying with her in her dog bed and making sure she knew she was loved. Her favorite thing was a crowd of family half in the bag and dropping food on the floor for her to clean up. Sunday night we had a fire and she made it out to sit with everyone for a little bit before retreating to back to her corner of the kitchen and the warmth of her dog bed.
Tonight I brought her for her last ride in the car. I propped her up in the back seat and rolled down all the windows so she could hang her head out like she loves. It was 55 degrees. She always loved the cold. We used to call her snow dog. It seems to me that she spent more time outside in snow storms than when the weather was clear.
I sat and held her throughout the process. She went peacefully, looking into my eyes. I held her for a long while after. I don't really remember the ride home. When I got there it took me several minutes to get from the car back into the house. My wife came out and we made the long journey back inside together. I haven't cried like that since my Dad died. She's left one hell of a hole in my heart.
A friend of my daughter Aidan printed a beautiful story about where dogs go when they die. It’s a wonderful place where they are restored to their former youth and vigor and get to play in a meadow with all the other pets that moved beyond this world. I’ve seen it before. You probably have too.
Goodbye Abby. Have fun in the meadow girl. I’ll be along eventually.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

I know that i do with our cat that passed right after our move here to OR> I swear she held on just long enough to see us settled up here and in our own place.

This past Monday I had to put down Binki the cat after being with our family for 24 years. Never an easy thing to do but it is usually the best decision for the animal.

Good-bye Abby. So very sorry for your loss, Dennis and all your family. Damn this hurts and it is not even my dog. The innocence of a loved pet.
Sorry for your loss also Bob with your kitty. 24 years is quite a good, long life.
Maybe Binky and Addy are playing together now. Very sorry for both your losses.

I am so sorry for your loss...as lucky as you were to have her in your life..she was just as lucky to have such a wonderfully loving family.You did what was best for her...out of love for her.Rest assured she'll be waitin for you when the time comes,but for now..she is running & playing in the meadow..pain free.

Dennis,
OMG...I hate stories like these. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how your heart must be hurting. We too lost our Weimaraner after 14 years to a tumor. My parents loved that dog so much they had him cremated...he's on the mantle. 
I'm praying that your hearts will heal...

You ripped my heart out with this beautiful tribute to your loving friend Dennis... we too have had to put down a dear dog that we so loved and it took 9 long years to get another pup... I am so sorry for your loss... Abby was truly blessed to have such a caring master.
Be well, and find comfort in knowing she is frolicking in the daisies in a beautiful land.
