Help us help a hedgehog!
« on: Sep 30th, 2007, 4:18pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Timo and I found a wounded hedgehog lying on the middle of a road. As nature lovers, we bought the poor hedgehod to our flat, to warm place to heal.

Now, neither of us knows how to help a hedgehog. We have been reading websites and found contact info to a lady who is the local animal protection person - her details were available at a hedgehog website as the first person to contact back in here.

But it's late and we want to do as much as we can to help this poor little creature. If you have advices/experiences/information about what we should do next... We would appreciate it a lot!

Best wishes,
Sanna

Sanna,

I found a wounded little sparrow a few months ago,  I was able to find a bird rescue league and called them even though it was very late in the evening.

When I called, I apologized every way that I could think of for calling so late but the lady who heads the rescue league told me not to worry.  She said that was already awake tending to another wounded bird and was also used to getting phone calls at all hours of the day and night.

Are there any 24 hour emergency animal hospitals around you that you could call?  Perhaps they can offer some advice until you can contact the animal protection person in the morning.

If you do not want to call, I would try to keep the hedgehog as quiet as possible and be as careful as you and Timo can to not get bitten or scratched.  Provide some water and whatever kind of food that you think it will eat and give it some blankets or towels to snuggle under.

It hurts so badly to see any kind of animal injured....thank you both for being such caring people!!

OMG guys you are so mean  Angry!

Sanna, call the rescue place, they are the ones who know what to do in a case like this, I think that they are supposed to be available at all times, it is not like animals have schedules to be injured  Sad..

Thanks for being so kind and sweet  Kiss

Aren't hedgehogs insectivores?  I'd imagine he'd appreciate a few earthworms if he's in the mood to eat.  Good move contacting the animal rescue people--I'm sure they'll have some worthwhile advice.

If I'm not mistaken, I think they like to hide.  Perhaps a nice, small dark box that he can retreat to with a towel or something that he can rest on.

Sanna, you're one of the sweetest, kindest people I know...so I think I should tell you that I once knew a guy who had a hedgehog as a "pet" .

It was one of the most evil-natured creatures I've ever run across.  Perhaps that's not representative of the general ruck of hedgehog-kind, but I wouldn't bet on it.  That hedgehog was rotten-tempered to the core.

After your accidental hedgehog gets better, you may all be happier if you go your separate ways.

Best wishes,

George

Here's what happened: I sent a text message to the animal protection lady and she replied! It was late, so we were happily surprised. Smiley She told us what to do and contact another person in the morning.

We followed her instructions: placed the hedgehog carefully to a box, which was covered with small pieces of paper - like nest. (Cyn, once be brough the hedgehog home we placed a small towel on top of it.)
Then we filled a bottle with very warm water and covered the bottle with a towel. Then we placed that bottle to the box - its duty was to make sure that the hedgehog stays warm.

We planned to offer the hedgehog water, but the lady informed us that wounded hedgehogs do not eat or drink; they just need to be in a warm, safe place and left alone.

We were instructed to check after few hours if the bottle is still warm. If not, then change the water to warm one.

When we woke up to do that, we found out that the hedgehog had passed away... Sad Sad Sad

This morning we sent a text message to the another nature protection person and asked her if she wanted to see the hedgehog or can be bury it. She replied that we can bury the hedgehog and said that the poor little hedgehog probably was too wounded to survive anyway and thanked us for taking care of it anyway.

We're on our way to bury the hedgehog now.

I want to thank those of you who shared your advices what to do and hope that the rest will understand that although my sense of humor is wide and I'm known to find odd things hilariously funny, this situation is not something to laugh about.

PF wishes,
Sanna

Sorry Sanna, I know how you feel towards animals. You did all you could and I would have done the same thing to do all we could for a wounded animal.
You did all you could and that is all one can do.

Cyn & Barry,

thank you for your kinds words. Smiley

Leaving the hedgehog to the road was not an option... And I do wish that we could have done more. Now the little hedgehod is buried to a forest near us, that was the least we could do after we coundn't save its life.

I know that it may sound silly, but I consider finding and taking care of that little hedgehog a blessing. It didn't seem to suffer, which is fourtunate... It just fell into eternal sleep. I just hope that spending its final hours at a warm, safe place gave its life more humane ending.

I have been helping animals in need in past as well. And buried dead birds near our summer cottage. My parents were born and raised in the countryside, but both taught me to help, nurture and take care animals.

That's how I see it,
Sanna

Dear Sanna,

I am sadden to hear that the little hedgehog didnt make it but we can only try.

The hedgehog sure would have preferred to die tucked up in a safe warm box then on the cold hard road.

Thank you for having cared. We, big and small, are all creatures of God.

Hugs

Aw, sweetie, I'm sorry.  Cry
You and Timo did a wonderful thing, even if it didn't work out as you'd hoped. He passed peacefully, knowing that someone cared.
BIG hugs to you both, nani
