Did some bodywork this year

My son & I did a little un-professional body work on a few trucks this year. The first (grey) Blazer I bought for my son as his first truck. I don't have a "before" pic of it. When we got it, the body was so rusted out that you could see inside the cab  laugh

Every fender and panel was rusted 1 ft. up..all the way around...every fender, every panel!!! All the way up to the gas door pictured in this photo.

I made panels from 24 gage metal by hand.
After we did the metal replacement:

Came out pretty good considering we only spent about $100 on it.

We later bought this Blazer off his older brother: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee223/assaultu2/AndysBlazer0010.jpg

It wasnt nearly as bad.
After another $100....it looks like this:

The boy is pretty happy with his red Blazer now. We put new: brakes, tires, & many new mechanical parts on it so it will be reliable for him to drive.
I just kept the grey one as a "spare" to beat back & forth to work in.

They are certainly not done expertly. But all things considered we did ok with these two trucks for about $200. Have been driving them for about 6 months now without a single problem.

Cheers, Dave

Yeah Jonny...I saw that "Sphere" looking thing you made somewhere on an earlier post. I was impressed to say the least. I know who difficult fabrication like that is.

What is the "tubing" project for? Whatever it is, it looks great!!!! I kinda looked at your site, but didnt get to see any of your projects that you build. Would like to see some of them sometime !!!

Yeah Charlotte..thanks!!
The boy, unlike his 2 older Brothers, is not mechanically inclined at all. He's very smart and an "artist" type. He draws those Japanese drawings of like: you know...the Samurai guys and the girls with big eyes. He's really very good at it !!! He also does product testing of video games on the internet with other kids around the world. They test the games to find tricks that the developer hadn't engineered into them. Then the engineers can go back and modify the game or just leave it alone.

I think it is important for every boy & girl to learn at least some basic car maintenance stuff. That way, they can avoid getting hosed at the mechanic.

I made him learn oil changes, tire replacement and some light mechanical work. When I'm gone, he will need these skills. The boss dont want to hear you calling in late every morning cause your car wont start or whatever !!!
Glad y'all liked the photos.

Great difference, they look like enviously life-long and durably good-looking vehicles, which I'm sure would surprise their manufacturing company greatly.  Wink   It's a lot of hard work.  Way to go Dave!

Thanks Kevin !!!

Oh man!!! Jonny just sent me some pics of a brass handrail he built.

I'm tellin' y'all...it was world-class fabrication work !!!!

We do handrail where I fabricate, but ours is more "utilitarian"
Everything we do is also custom work, but since it is industrial, the project doesn't get super-fine finishes or detail.

This is an example of a job we did. Had 14 of these dust collectors in various sizes.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee223/assaultu2/DSCF0417.jpg

The handrail in the foreground is an example of the industrial type we build to attach to cat-walks around dust collectors. Everything starts out as flat sheets or angle iron, flatbar etc. The trick to this type of fabrication is obviously to get it built exactly to the print, but also to get it done within the time limit needed to make a buck.

I have a great team. We finished our units a full 1-1/2 weeks quicker than the other 3 teams.

You wont hijack the thread Jonny....go ahead and post some of that awesome looking brass work you did!!
Cheers, Dave

Thats nice stuff Jonny. The one I really liked was the "loft ladder" Looks like you have a tubing bender at your shop. Looked good. Heres another pic of the kind of stuff we do:
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee223/assaultu2/DSCF0588.jpg

This one was built by another project manager.I only built the inlet.

It's obviously a huge fan housing. It was made from 7 ga. type 316 stainless steel. These have so much c.f.m. that when you open the door where the filter media is at (about 15 ft. away from the fan) it will literally suck the hardhat from your head. It is used to dry corn or soy beans.

We used to do a lot more building of small more polished stuff, but the landscape of the available work has changed and we have been doing a lot more really large projects.

At first I didn't like the big stuff all that much. But I have grown to like handling big parts with the 25 ton crane.

Our roll will roll up to (I am thinking) about 1-1/2" mild steel plate any diameter down to about 14" by 5 ft. long.

You would think the big stuff would be harder on your back, but actually the cranes, chain come-alongs and fork trucks  do most of the work and human muscle isn't used as much as you would think.

Sometimes it takes some muscle. In the first picture, you will see the end of a cone protruding from inside the tank. It has to be forced inside and welded in place. Thats a little rough.

Anyways, it's a job I love and am proud to be a part of.
You do fine work...keep up the good work !!!
 Cheers, Dave
