Its 6 years as of tomorrow morning, Tuesday Morning 8:46 am eastern time when the first plane hit.
Try to think back to how you have changed during the last 6 years.
Can you remember what you were doing when you heard the first time?
Can you remember how you reacted.
Can you ever feel the way you did 6 years ago today?
The day before.
Please tell us what you can.

I would like to start.
Tuesday Sept. 11, 2001 like the day before started with my normal morning commute to work at 6:00 am Central time. I arrived and got to my cubicle and logged into my computer to check the news before my day started. Normally I would turn on my radio to get local news at the same time but today I forgot. Shortly before 7:55 am a coworker came up and told me to turn up my radio because a plane had ran into the world trade center in New York. I thought he was joking but went ahead and turned on my radio and turned it up. Sure enough it was true. I then decided to go to our lobby were there was a television always on cnn and as I watched there it was a live feed as the second plane hit. I cant really describe what I felt it was like I went numb for a while and could not feel anything. I was frozen there just frozen. As the day unfolded I could do little more than keep going to the lobby and see what was happening.
Most of that day is still a blur.
I have since moved to Texas from St.Louis and now volunteer as a firefighter. I have changed from being self centered to trying to help others when I can. That 1 day has changed my life forever, I believe for the better.

I will never forget that day....I was with my ex-wife both trying to wake up drinking coffee and one of us put the t.v. on (this was after the 1 plane hit) cnn or fox... As the reporter was talking with the towers in the backround i remember seeing the second plane coming in and started to scream (as i saw what was about to happen)spilling coffee all over....I did not leave the house that day,i was very deppressed and filled with alot of anger...As a matter of fact i did not go to work the rest of the week....I have a cousin that worked in 1 of the towers and we were all worried what happened to her (we kept getting rapid busy signals on the phones trying to reach all my relatives back east)finally got a call from reina to let us know that she was okay(on her cell phone...she lost many co-workers)....If i recall correct,i called a recruiting office in van nuys,calif. that afternoon or the following day and the guy kind of laughed at me when i told him my age(at the time i was 42)....I have never felt that feeling in my life the way i did ,and i still get that feeling when i sit back and think about that day (not talking about the recruiter)....I dont understand why this is not a national holiday....Lenny

That morning I woke up with the usual morning sickness as I was about 4 months pregnant and my husband called me and told me to turn on the news...There it was when the first plane hit and then I saw LIVE when the second one hit and all I could do was cry and pray....I don't know how many rosaries I prayed, they just continue one after the other for the souls that died in the towers and for the ones in the planes...
my eyes hurt so much after that day and the coming days...I cried so much...of sadness for all the kids left without parents...for the parents left without their kids...and of anger for the injustice and the horrible crime commited against inocent people...
Till this day, I feel sad because I know what is like to lose a loved one, and the memories come back as fresh as yesterday...
God had mercy of all the people who died that day and of their families who still cry for their gone loved ones. I hope that to know one day they all will be reunited will bring some closure to their hearts.

I was at my desk. We all sat silently with our personal head phones on listening to whatever we chose. I had on the local radio station and told those around me in an embarrassingly nonchalant way, "some dumbass just flew a plane into one of the twin towers. How can you NOT see a building?" It was before anyone knew what was really going on.
When the pentagon got hit, I was panicking: Darryl's load (truck driver) was right up there that morning. I couldn't think about that because one of our younger associate's mom was on a plane and the poor girl was losing it. I still had the headset on, listening with one ear, and Brea (the girl whose mom is a stewardess) and Kay were asking me for updates. I was so sick to my stomach as the 4th plane went down and I didn't want to tell her. She just crumpled on the floor and sobbed.
All work stopped. We went into a conference room. We clung to each other mentally, emotionally, physically. Then we went home to be with our families. I'll never forget.

I was burying my mom at the National Cemetery on Cape Cod with f-14s flying over from the air base down the road. Very surreal day
How has it changed me? Well, right or wrong I have become less questioning about government intrusion in my life. If a airport security guy told me to remove my shoes in 2000 I would have asked for his supervisor. Not now. I comply without question and have thanked airport security personnel when they put me through the security ringer. Kinda wierd isn't it?

I was getting the kids ready for school. Mooshie was in kindergarten and Jobo was in 3rd grade. I think I had PBS on TV for the kids. Bob, already at work, called and said "Turn on the TV in the bedroom." (The last time he called and said that was the day of the Oklahoma City bombing) I turned it on just in time for the 2nd plane to hit the towers.
I have a cousin, who's a NYPD transit cop, who was once (but it turned out wasn't anymore)stationed in the subway just under the WTC. I have another cousin who worked at St Vincent's Hospital, within 10 blocks of the WTC.
I somehow got the kids to school (after Bob told me I had to, I really just wanted to keep them close), then spent the next 7 hours frantically trying to reach my aunt and other relatives and friends still in NY. The phone lines were overloaded and all I could get was busy signals. I alternately cried and vomited all day.
Thankfully, all my friends and family were safe, but it was about 3 days before we knew for sure.
I will certainly never forget.

I was at work and we had the TV on very depressing the mood that day and after work my wifey picked me up and we had to go fill up the gas tank and stopped at a Casey's the bastards had the price of gas at over $6.00 a gallon and I have never stopped there again cause of that and never will ever shop there for anything Terry
and on news the other night they were talking about the workers on ground zero now coming down with copd type problems from all the metals that were melted and such

The only flights overhead that day were the A10's from the ANG base here, and the fighters from the 366th Fighter Wing at Mountain Home AFB.
Terrible day--we first heard the news on NPR just before 7:00 AM here. Although no one we knew personally was directly affected, at times like that we are all one people, and the suffering of others becomes our suffering as well.
Never forget.
Let us DEMAND justice for this act. No matter the explanations and the excuses, and the realpolitik we're told is involved--we, the American people, have waited, patiently, for justice for a very long time.
We demand it.

9/11/01 The world as I knew it and my sense of safety changed forever !!!!!!!! Weeks of collection and resupply to ground zero......Months - years of grief work and PTSD work with pts. , memorials , funerals , fundraisers and dedications.......... I've never gotten over the emotional fatique.......the horror,the sorrow and the honor of walking with many through thier forever changed lives............ Each moment is not taken for granted ever again....... I still work with many families of grief from the loss and rescue and recovery efforts........Ours lives and the world as we knew it are forever changed ....... God bless America....God save us all.... phil h

I was working at a job pruning some bushes. I had only been to that place a few times, and it was hard to find. Always had to use directions to get there. I know exactly how to get there now, as I can't forget how that day went.
About an hour into the job, my cell phone rang. My (now ex) wife calling to let me know there was something going at the world trade center. Didn't know if it was a bomb, or what. Everything kinda unfolded as I tried to keep working, with the cell's speakerphone on, and dangling from my waist, talking with her until about 1/2 hour after the towers fell. She was really in a panic, and I tried so hard to make it sound like it was not a big deal. I knew better. Against my advice, she went to get the kids from school early, and kinda locked herself in the house the rest of the day. I know my children remember what happened, but I think they were too young to really appreciate the severity of it.
I kept working (sorta) with the radio turned on in my work truck, keeping tabs on what was going on. Really didn't care for Howard Stern, but that's all I could get to come in there. I gotta say... Being IN New York then, Stern gave some excellent live coverage, and stayed on the air at least a good 2-3 hours after his how was supposed to end. Ended up leaving work a little early that day, the wife was not taking this well.
The drive home was very weird. 45 minute drive through the worst traffic in our area, and it was almost dead silent. Nobody honking, revving their engines, or yelling out the windows... Just weird.
Finally got home to see the news, and after just staring at the TV with a stunned look on my face for about 15 minutes, I broke down in tears. How could somebody DO something like that?!?
A day or two later, the news people were all comparing that day to the Kennedy assassination... You'll never forget where you were when it happened. I'm too young to remember Kennedy, but I'll never forget 9/11. I hope my children don't ever have a "day to remember" like that. I'm praying that was the last.

I was heading out to take the dog for a walk when a neighbor walked by and asked if I'd heard what happened.
I turned right around and came back in and was glued to the tv for the rest of the day.
The most surreal part of the day was watching that first tower collapse and NONE of the anchor people said anything. I kept screaming at the tv "can't you see the tower collapsed??"
My son was in 5th grade and I really wanted to run to school and pull him out so we could all be together. Brew was working at home.
I, for one, will never forget.

I was getting ready for work and listening to Imus when his show was interrupted with the news that a plane had crashed into the first tower. At first it was thought an accident. On the way to work listening to the radio the second one hit.
When I got to the office, someone had already set up the TV and for the rest of the day we sat glued to it (might as well have gone home). One of the ladies who worked there had a son who worked with AA and he was supposed to be in NY. The office was in panic mode until we found out he was in Dallas and not in NY, but it was almost 3 that afternoon before we found that out.
When Bush landed at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport I went into a panic because my kids both worked less than a mile from there. I was glad when he took off and went elsewhere and my kids were safe.
It was a day like the day JFK was assiniated - just not something you can ever forget.
But, like Don, I don't bitch about airport security and get aggraviated with people who do. I just try to remember to wear socks without holes when I wear tennis shoes.
But 9-11 will always be a day of rememberance.

A moment of silence at 9:03 a.m. - I was in Upstate NY, my husband was stationed at Fort Drum, and 6 years ago at this moment in time, he was on the phone with me, asking if I was watching, and after that moment in time, forever burned into my mind, I learned my world was going to change in a way I never dreamed - I learned my husband was at war.
I can't stop crying today this morning - must be the Tuesday and clear blue skies.
The rest of the story....
I remember the absolutely crystal blue skies in NY state that day. It was a beautiful September day. The kids had just gone back to school, I was home with just my little one, barely over a year old. I had just stepped out of the shower when the phone rang.
Clark was calling me from the base (Fort Drum 10th Mountain Div.), he asked if I was watching CNN. I made some off the cuff remark that "duh, I have a 1 year old at home, Sesame Street maybe, CNN?? No!". He said go turn it on, someone just flew a plane into the WTC. Then he said "Oh My God, did you see that??" It didn't sink in, I was standing in a towel and told him I'd call him back. I got dressed, went downstairs and turned the TV to CNN. The OMG was because he was watching the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower.
I called him back and we talked a bit, he was in military mode so I didn't get to talk to him long. Then I sat riveted to the television, and watched as a 3rd plane (initially thought to be a helicopter) crashed into the pentagon. I knew better than to try and call Clark on the base, so I sent him an email that said "Should I be getting scared now?" He replied with one word - "Yes"
At 1:00 p.m. he pulled up in front of the house. All the fear of that day deepened 10 fold because I knew there was only one reason he was home. He quietly loaded all his mobility gear into the back of his car and kissed me deeply and wiped away my tears, then kissed his son of only a year, and said "I don't know when I'll be home again" I had a million questions, and knew that he could answer none of them. I told him to call the first chance he got.
As I watched him drive away I was mixed with a sense of terrible grief and fear because I truly did not know when I would see him again, or IF I would see him again. But more than that, I held a sense of pride that carried me through that dark day.
The skies were very blue that day, and without a cloud in the NY sky, the rain of a million tears fell upon us...

I too remember everything I did that day and have been changed forever. My husband has been in the fire service for 27 years as a Deputy Chief so it hit close to home. When he goes off to work for 24 hours I have terrible anxiety. God Bless all those who lost their lives. It is a very dreary day here in CT.....lots of rain.....I think it is all the tears from heaven. I remember that day it was beautiful outside. I hope that our government and country has learned and made enough changes so that a tragedy like this will never happen again....sometimes I wonder.....God Bless....

I had the day off, radio alarm went off at 9:00am. A long familiar and very recognizable voice of Dick Purtan came on while I just laid relaxed, he said, it... appears now a second plane has crashed into the other twin tower.
A certain puzzling, very concerned, and serious tone to his voice made me jump from the bed to the TV. I had that day and the next off and never stopped watching, wondering how I could go back to work without a TV two days later.
Many moments still visually remembered. Also, seeing a first camera shot of Washington DC from far away and billowing black smoke pluming through the air, not knowing what it was yet, a very devastating time, the Pentagon too. And then another plane crashing in PA, the passenger's deaths in foiling another attempt.
For today, never again, whatever it takes.

What a horror and if newer generations needed a Pearl Harbor or Novemeber 22nd, I'm sure sorry that it was such a monstrous thing.
I was lucky. I had no one hurt on that horrible day.
