They're done with dad....

Dad donated his body to the Medical College of Wisconsin. They're done with him already. His cremated remains are there now. Now what? Do we go pick him up? What? Well, they're going to send him by Certified Mail!! Mom told me, and I'll swear I didn't stop laughing for three minutes.... Going through my head: If he shows up unannounced: "If I knew you were comin' I'da baked a cake...." If the mail gets misdirected: well, he'll see new places... If someone else gets the package and thinks it's a bomb: Dad'll be blown to smithereens!! Sick, twisted sense of humor - I know. But I also know Dad would be laughing right along with me.... So, in case I'm a wee bit bitchy with people - Daddy's coming home, in a big envelope.... No more pretending - reality sets in.

You have the remains sent to a funeral home and then you pick a casket. It was a year before my Dad came back.

My uncle had a very very rare form of cancer and he donated his body to science also. He came home in about a year, his body was cremated by them already. Its kind of like the closure is completed when you know he's home. Sean...................................

Lizzie - For all the reasons you raise and a hundred more, FedEx will not knowingly move cremains. We used to, but something happened once to what was left of Uncle Ned, and we said "no more."

| Like..... he's being sent by Certified Mail - does that make him "certifiable"? how about a certified male? Go for it, folks! I could *really* use a good laugh....

I got my sense of humor from my Dad, too. I'm sure he laughed right along with my sister and I making totally inappropriate jokes during his funeral. Look at it this way, Lizzie...you and your Dad are still laughing together. BIG hugs, nani

Lizzie, Humor helps with healing, it's god for you. I had plenty of laughter with my dad as well. 10 years on, and I can still recall what his face looked like when something was hilarious to him and 'hear' his laughter... Sanna

| Or you could do what we did with Brew's dad and bury his cremains in an Army ammunition box. On a side note I went out to the cemetery NINE months after my dad's death and he STILL doesn't have grass or sod or nuthin over his grave. And to make matters worse they skinned the whole plot (mom's included) so it's just a big square of mud and weeds. He's gonna haunt me for sure.

Two years after Elizabeth's mother died, we got a call from the funeral home--they'd found EJ's mother's cremains in a filing cabinet in their office. They'd lost them, or forgotten about them, or something. This was a year AFTER we'd had a monument installed in the local cemetery over her mother's cremated remains. I'm not sure what subsequently occurred, but there was some rapid activity on the part of the funeral home, and the monument was reinstalled after a "correction" was made. There was talk in some quarters about suing somebody or other, but suing people is not something we do very often. After the initial shock, the concept of Musical Graves had its humorous aspects. Besides--it's not like the funeral home tried to cover it up...they admitted responsibility and took care of it, when they could have chucked them somewhere and kept their mouths shut, and no one the wiser. And so it remains merely something that entered the storehouse of family legends. Liz's mother was a native New Orleansian--so there were already plenty of peculiar burial stories in her family. This was just one more. And her mother would have loved it....she always said she wanted to be buried in a French Market coffee can. Best wishes, George

Hon there is just something about getting the cremated remains back, that is funny to us. Jackie and I joked about my son in law as his remains were being escorted to his final resting place. A friend of mine husband died and he was cremated. We went to pick his remains from the funeral home. She needed a ride but didn't tell me what she was doing. She brought Wayne out in this little box. I said is that Wayne? She looked so sad and I said let him ride up front with us. We cracked jokes all the way back to her place. At least when she left me she was smiling. I know I would rather my love ones to laugh instead of cry when thinking of me. Glad he is home.

I'm glad to see that you can find some humor in all this Lizzie. I'm sure he would approve, where ever he is. My Dad tought me what funny was too. He passed November 2004. I still get overcome sometimes. It happens when I least expect it. Anyway, I'm adding my hugs to the list. -Dennis-
