The passing of the ...

...tongs? Yes my friends...last night, I christened my (very soon to be) 17 year old son to fine art of grilling. I placed, into his hands the tongs and a platter of pork chops to be grilled for our evening meal. In my 15 year old daughters care was the making of the side dishes of corn, rice and warming a loaf of bread in foil on the same said grill. Now a teenager and open flames may be a parent's worst nightmare. Just the ever increasing cost of groceries could have a parent on a tight budget chewing their fingernails to bloody stumps over the potential waste and destruction of so much expencive meat. However, just as I suspected, Dylan did a perfect job of grilling the chops, and Meg's side dishes were equally perfect. It's a joy watching these two take on more and more tasks and seeing them succeed at them. It was a small thing, really, but each step towards adulthood is a step to be proud of.

Its hard to give up the tongs though isn't it Pegg? Its lovely to see you so proud of your kids though and I love getting the chance to share their lives even vicariously like this - well done Meg and Dyl - I hope I get to eat dinner cooked by you one day!

Redd, this is the voice of experience speaking ... Enjoy your victory (and the chops!) while it lasts. I predict within a month the novelty of the task will ware off and he'll run at the very sight of raw meat awaiting the warming touch of the grill Of course, there is always a first time. -Dennis-

| There is actually a course at the high school for professional cooking. He wants to take it, and then apprentice at one of the local supper clubs. He actually enjoys cooking.

Then I stand corrected! I'd give him free access to the kitchen too. Hell, you may never have to cook again Sounds like you've got a kid with direction at 17. That is a very rare thing. Congratulations. -Dennis-

Pegg, that's wonderful! Congrats to Meg and Dylan! And it's great that you're doing what my mom did - allow to try. I've been cooking and baking since I was a toddler. I didn't do much good at the first few years, but the enthusiasm and excitement I felt ever since is still inspiring me to cook and bake. Sanna

Direction? Too many of them some days I think. His true passion is writing, and he has one manuscript almost finished that he hopes to get published. He also has a number of other stories in the works that he hopes to publish as well. Who knows what they will end up becoming. It sure is interesting to watch as they make their ways though.

awesome! I know how wonderful it feels when your kids make a meal like that. When did they get so big, you ask? When you blinked. You have much to be proud of Pegg
