My brother, John...(Now with pics)

...flew in from Florida to visit. He and I went up on the Middle Fork to do some fly fishing for several days Just got back. Pics as soon as we find the &^%$ cord for the digital camera. (Remodeling sucks.) Cool trip. Caught a lot of fish, stayed at Twin Springs (where the cabins are much nicer than they used to be during the "naked hippy" days in the 'seventies) and the hot springs were very fine to wallow in after a days' fishing. Mostly McCloud rainbows (wild), and some Redbands on the upper river. Hooked a couple of Bull Trout (Salvelinus confluentis) on the Queens River. Nothing of any size, though. It's hopper season, so the fishing was easy and fun with flies that were big enough to see. Saw two bears (blacks). Took a picture of one. Guess I'll see whether or not it turned out--we only had the point-and-shoot digital camera with us, not the good one. For LeeS--no good bird pictures, but we saw a bald eagle, a Red-Shouldered Hawk, a Red-tailed Hawk, the usual Stellar's Jays, a Prairie Falcon, a Merlin, a Western Bluebird, a couple of Mountain Bluebirds, a few Calliope Hummingbirds, a Western Tanager (female) an osprey, a bunch of LBJ's and a Nashville Warbler--which is a new one for me, and a nice addition to my life list. Some others too, but I don't remember them right now. Great time, and very much needed. A few days in the backcountry does wonders for the attitude. Problem is, it only emphasizes what John and I ought to be doing instead of what we're actually doing. Best wishes--and pics to be added soon, I promise. I can see I've missed a lot while I've been gone. Looks like I have a lot of reading to do. George

George, that sounded like a one fantastic trip! I'm glad that you got to take some time off and relax. I would have been scared if I had seen a bear, though... but that fishing and seeing all those birds must have been great. Sanna

The lodge at Twin Springs. They have a large, low-sulpher hot spring on the hill above, which supplies all the hot water for the lodge and cabins, geothermal heat for all the buildings, and plenty of 170 degree water for all the hot pools--wonderful to soak in after standing in the river all day. John was interested in the low-head hydroelectric system that they use to generate their power--he was an electronics guy in the Navy. My brother, John. I'd have taken him somewhere more remote for a bit of hiking, but his left leg is held together with 23 pins and screws--the result of an accidental injury during the first Gulf War. John's more than game, and would never have complained, but why put him through it, eh? We had a great time on the Middle Fork, where we could drive most anywhere. Some pictures of the Middle Fork: Sorry to end on a sour note, but here's a pic of Ol' Beaknose with his eyes closed: The bear photo didn't turn out, dadblastit. Hope you enjoyed seeing a few photos of our fishing trip. We had a great time. Best, George

Great views! Now, George, let's keep those rivers to ourselves,ok? If I'll show this thread to Timo, he'll be on the next plane there... He loves to fish! We actually have some of the fish he caught last week in the freezer. We spot a small hawk at our yard yesterday, so if you have pics of some of the birds you saw I'd love to see them. We didn't get a pic of the hawk... it flew away before it was caught on the film. Sanna
