Mole Tale--Positive Update.  <smile>

You really never know what's going through your kid's head.

A couple of weeks ago, Ellen was sitting on the couch next to me, and turned her head quickly to look at something.  Her hair flipped up, and I noticed a big--thing--on the back of her head.

"What the heck is that?"

"Nothing.  Forget about it."

"No.  I'd better take a look at it."

"Forget it, I said."

"No, I'm your Dad.  I have to see it."

"It" was a big, flesh-colored sticking-out mole, about the size of a nickel.

"How long have you had this?"

"Oh--since I was seven, I guess".  She's sixteen now.  Never said a word.

I could tell it had worried her for a long time.

We made an appointment with the dermatologist over her strenuous objections.  She did NOT want to get it removed.  I told her that we'd go with what the dermatologist said.  If he said it was okay to leave it alone, we would.  It sure was an ugly thing, though...yeesh.

Now--she's a tough kid.  Tough as nails.  A couple of weeks ago, she broke a toe, but just taped it to the next one and kept on walking.  Getting this mole removed really got her goat, though.  I guess she figured it would be a drawn-out and painful experience.

It wasn't.  Yesterday, the dermatologist took a look at it, said it was just a large, benign mole, and said, "well, let's take it off".  She turned a little white, but consented to it.  He stuck it with a little novacaine, used a double-edged razor--zip--and that was it.  Very superficial.  It only bled a little, and there was just healthy skin underneath.

Ever have one of those experiences that you just know is going to be bad, and have it turn out to be nothing?  Her relief was palpable.

I felt so sorry for her.  She's had this thing on her head for years, kept it a secret, probably brooded about it sometimes, and worried.  I only wish I had known.  Kid's do the strangest things.

They sent it in for a biopsy as a precaution.  But the doctor seems to think that it's fine, and I'm sure it will be.

Now she can worry about something else.   Undecided  And so can I.

Best,

George

George,

I can complitely feel what Ellen must have felt... hug

When I saw an odd mole on my face, I didn't think of it first, but when my GP couldn't tell what it is and I saw a skin cancer story in which similar mole was shown I freaked out... until the dermatologist told me that it was nothing. But the month between seeing the GP and dermatogist... I was a wreck.

It's horrible to worry about something, and keep that fear inside. Then when you hear that it is, indeed, nothing the relief is incredible.

Best wishes,
Sanna

Poor Ellen and poor you. There is nothing worse than knowing your kids have kept their fears from you is there? It makes me feel totally redundant (luckily it doesn't happen much, mine like talking too much!)

I'm glad it all ended so well. I can't remember who it is but someone has a quote here that says something like the only thing to fear is fear itself and its certainly true this time around.

lots of love to you all

So glad to hear it was nothing and she handled it so well.

Jrbrew had to have a bit of oral surgery to retrieve a tooth that wasn't coming in.  He made major noises about "they are NOT going to cut my gums"  and " I WON'T go". . but when the time came he marched in there and took it like the young man he's becoming . . .

He also discovered the joys of nitrous oxide that day . . . . Wink

Helen, I believe that was Franklin D. Roosevelt.

You did the right thing George (and judging by your tone, I think you know that). When I was 30 I discovered this little white, crusty area on the tip of my nose, no bigger than the head of a pin. I thought it was a zit. I'd squeeze it, it would bleed, then I'd leave it for awhile. Went through that cycle a few times, and it wasn't getting any better.

Eventually went to the dermatologist, who had the thing biopsied. It was a basal cell carcinoma. Had the rest of it removed, and now I have a dent in the tip of my nose about the size of a pencil eraser. Plastic surgeons can't guarantee much with the tip of the nose - the skin is stretched so tightly across there that it may end up looking worse than the dent itself. So, now I've had this dent for the last sixteen years. And no basal cell.

My dent is my personal reminder, everytime I look in the mirror, to put on sunscreen if I'm going outside.

Ya done right by your daughter, George. Like Jonny said, you're a good dad.

Agree too, George, you did the right thing.  Moles can "get feet".  She'll be happy you took concern enough to get it taken care of, giving the right parental push.

I thought this was going to be a nature story.

You did good, George. We like to think of our kids as carefree, without any worries. But they do worry, and often don't tell us. You gave her the nudge, and the support to face this like a woman. Good job.

It was a good thing you had that removed. I'm sure it has been worrying her for a long time, you never know. Hopefully, it's nothing.

I had an odd shaped mole removed from my thigh, and I didn't even know it was there. It just appeared, and it was an odd shape and color. Got it taken off, and it was benign. What a relief.

I'm sure she will be fine, and is feeling all kinds of relief after having it removed.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I wanted to let you know that the biopsy was negative.  The thing was harmless, and no further treatment is necessary.

A relief.  Ellen's back in school, so I'll let her know this afternoon.

Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone.
