My turn to rant....

After the last 2 weeks here and getting the kids back to school yesterday (3 kids, 3 different schools, 3 different start/finish times and only one gets on a bus - but that's a whole other rant) I have had the 'privilege' of learning that if only hand sanitizer as alcohol were a problem life would be easy.
This is a rant, but any parent who wants to, feel free to take it as a word of caution. When I was 13 there was lots of peer pressure to experiment with marijuana, hell it started in about 6th grade and continued to escalate to drinking and heavier drugs throughout high school. I lived in an area that is well known for it's alcohol and drug issues. I have always talked ad nauseum to my kids about drugs and what they can do to you.
What I did NOT expect was to find out that 13 y/o kids are not only TRYING to get cocaine, but they CAN get it and EASILY. On top of that, "rainbow parties" or more commonly known as pharming parties, involve kids who steal, purchase, procure any kind of prescription drug and throw it in a pile with all kinds of other pretty color drugs and spend their time popping pills of sorts they know not. When a 13 y/o has a purse full of pills, all of them prescription, none of them prescribed to said 13 y/o, and they eat them like candy knowing the name of 'some' of them, and not knowing a thing about what they are for, that 8th graders are a haven for OTC drug highs, and that the midwest meth problem is not something that occurs in 'North O' and 'downtown' but is being cooked up by kids ranging in ages from 12 to 18, I truly had to sit down and shake my head.
I have never been a naive parent, or rather I never thought I was. I have tried to stay informed about the issues relevant to my kids ages, not what it was like when I was young, but apparently I need some upgrades on when they will get into it.
Ok, rant over, I have to go talk to child protective services again (not for my kids).
Maybe I'll even get my computer fixed and will be able to access my HD and email again and give my hubby back his hehe.... (don't spill tea on your laptop...oops different rant again)

Cat, I understand. Part of why we got out of Vegas was because of what I knew could be easily gotten from growing up there and knowing that it was a million times easier since I was in HS almost 20 yrs ago.
Now Im a bit neive (ok spelled way wrong but cant think atm) about what people / kids are into in OR and what is easy to get vs what is the drug of choice.
I am really really honest with my kids about dinking and drugs, and specifically about the meds that I and my husband take.
But it scares the shit out of me becaue my daughter is a but gullable, even thou she is really intelligent, sometimes not very smart and there is a big difference. Hopefully, I can teach her to think for herself and not just go along with whatever her friends of the day are doing.

I went to HS in the 80's and drugs where just as available then as they are now. I started smoking pot and doing speed when i was 13. By the time I was 16 I was doing coke and acid. That landed me my first trip into rehab. When I was 21 I was back on coke and meth and knew where all the local meth labs where and trafficed it. I got caught by my husband who turned me in and that landed me my second trip to rehab. I have been clean for over 15 years now. I thought I would know it all and would be able to tell if my kids were using and knew all the sneaky tactics. Much to my surprise when my 18 year old sat and told his recruiter that he had smoked pot, and taken excasy, and taken various perscription pills at parties. He got in on a drug waver. So he knew he couldn't do drugs anymore so he turned to alcohol. I got a call from the principle saying that my son was drunk at school and that he supplied it to a couple of other kids and could I please come get him because he was suspended for 3 days. Not my kid. I gave him a long lecture on the evils of drinking. I thought he understood and got the message. Much to my amazment when he left last week for boot camp and I cleaned his room out. I found an empty case of beer, 5 empty bottles of corrona, and two empty large bottles of vodka and rum! I guess nothing has changed over the last 25 years. Drugs are still readily available and kids will do what kids will do. Some feel the need to explore and wont learn any lesson until they do. For my son I hope that it is just exploring and not an addiction.
I thought I would know and be able to tell but if the child isn't honest with you there is not much you can do except love them and be there for them to pick up the pieces when they decide to quit using.

All you can do is hope and pray that what you have taught your kids sinks in and stays there. We were lucky in regards to this. We live in the country and she went to a very small school (like 650 K-12). There was drinking and some drugs, but it wasn't that pervasive and even then, it was more of a particular crowd than all the kids.
Sarah's 23 and has never tried anything but alcohol and even that she's used sense with (mainly because we told her that if we caught her behind the wheel of her car and she'd been drinking, we'd take the car away from her~still in our name).
We never lied to her about *our* younger days, both the good and evil side of them. We've always answered all her questions with honesty.
I'll trade my crack headed neighbors for a couple of those kids, at least the kids don't know any better.
