When life hands you lemons~positive update

Throw the bastards back!

Just got a call from Sarah, who is still in Poland.  She broke her foot last night (a girl stepped on it and her foot went sideways!  Went to the hospital in Krakow, x-rayed it and now she has a cast on it (the people who took her there strongly recommended that we take her to an orthopedist when she gets home).

Now, for the kicker!  She leaves tomorrow flying back home!  So, I have to call the airlines (in the US) and make sure they have a wheelchair and assistance for her because the crutches they gave her are not that good and I imagine by then her foot will be giving her some major problems since she won't be able to keep it propped up.

AND, now I will have to make sure that I clean the back seat out of my car, so she will be able to ride with her foot propped up if she wants to.

Where's the emoticon for pulling your hair out?  Or possibly one that shows your hair turning white?

Give me valium please!

Carolyn,

Take a deep breath. She's young - her bones will heal fast. She'll be fine -- calm down... Get some crutches for her here. (metal ones are the best - I know, we keep a set - for the "next" emergency).

Stress has now officially set in, shaking now and stomach is in knots.

Barb,
Not worried about her (not that much anyway, she sounded fine).  It's just that I've got to contact the airlines (somehow, since the only phone numbers I can get send me to recordings) and arrange a wheel chair, try and get her an appointment with an orthopedist and (this is the kicker) get my ass to work, cover three stores and hope like hell I don't get a call back on some of this, because there are several areas that I will be in today that I will not have cell phone coverage.

In other words, my a$$ is severely overloaded at this  point with no help in sight.

Carolyn, this is from AA but I know all airlines have a similarly named position:

Quote:
Special Assistance Coordinators
Within our Reservations Department, an exclusive team called Special Assistance Coordinators operates to help facilitate your travel. Specially trained in American Airlines and American Eagle policies and procedures, they document your reservation with information concerning your service requests to help prepare our airport staff. In certain circumstances, they will contact you by telephone before you travel. For this reason, it is helpful to have a valid, complete contact phone number available within your reservation.

Although not required to do so, our customers with disabilities advise us that pre-arranging for special assistance helps travel proceed more smoothly. Assistance from a Special Assistance Coordinator is arranged for at the time of booking with an AA Reservation Representative or with your Travel Agent upon identification of your support service request.

Go to the airlines website and search it out, or post the airline here and I'll search for you.

My youngest gets on the bus in 10 min. and for the first time since Mar. I will actually have a day to fall apart and probably won't know what to do with myself without my own emergency (yet - I live with Murphy and his law) so I'd be more than happy to help with yours Smiley

Delta.......just have your daughter request arrival / transfer assistance when she checks in for her flight tomorrow. The request will be forwarded to the destination airport and someone should be waiting there with a wheelchair / cart to help her.

Well, after me having a major meltdown this morning (bad enough that I decided that driving/working + hysterics=disaster), I took the day off.  American airlines was wonderful, they will have a wheelchair and assistance waiting for her when she clears customs.

Lotz, the Polish airline is another story.  You have to call 24 hours in advance to request a wheelchair (geez, next time I'll tell Sarah that if she wants to injure herself, to do with at least 24 hours before she has to depart).  Anyway, called the NYC office of Lotz.  Stayed on hold for 30-40 minutes (I'm sure I was getting strange looks from people because there was Polish music issuing from my left boob), to the point that I folded my phone up and put it in my pocket so as not to miss the call.  Finally got someone on the phone.  I guess she misunderstood me and thought that Sarah couldn't do anything for herself and proceeded to tell me that they might not let her on the flight <insert meltdown here>.

Came back home, decided to call Urzula with PAT tours (the company that made all the arrangements).  Bless that lady's heart, she called the airlines and got everything straightened out.  They can't reserve a chair in advance, but they HAVE to provide her one when she asks for it.

Got the ortho scheduled for next Tuesday (I am so lucky to have a job that allows me to be flexible where/when I work and to have a boss that has always emphasized that family comes first, before job).  Hopefully, the swelling will be down enough in order for them to either cast it or put a walking splint on it (she has that now).

AND to make matters real interesting here, she starts class on Monday (she's a grad student) and the injured foot is her right foot!   So, we will be ferrying her back and forth to class for awhile.  Lucky for us, she only has two classes and they are both at night.  I'm sure that her dept. head will work with us (she's well-liked and respected by her professors and peers).

I am now officially worn out and will probably take a nap here shortly.

To those who offered help, I really do appreciate it, now if I could just ask someone to bring me a whiskey and water, the day would be set  Grin.

Glad you got everything sorted out 'darlin, and I'm glad I put the disclaimer of yet into my offer to help hehe, I'll bring you that whiskey and water as long as you promise I can bring my tequila and we can sit and get royally sloshed after a day of respective meltdowns and crises resolution - and to think, I used to think that life was tough with CH  laugh Roll Eyes

Somehow I actually thought I would have children that would become teenagers and they would NOT be like me HA!  I am going to call my mother now and blame her for all this, she should have at least killed me instead of cursing me with "I hope you have a child just like you" and remind her no jury would have convicted her and I then would NOT be living out that damn curse!

I am glad you were able to get everything sorted out and that all is as well as can be expected under the circumstances.  Gimme a couple hours to get the whiskey to ya Wink

Cat,
Have more bad news.  They never go away (kinda like bad pennies).  Mine's 23 and mama is still having kittens!  Good thing about it is, she can go buy me liquor if I want it!

Come right on with the tequila!  We can sit on the front porch   in my swing built out of cypress and reminisce about the days before children (and yes, I do have a fan, else we'd sweat all the liquor out and it wouldn't do us any good).

So, tomorrow, it's off I go to Dallas to pick her up at DFW.  Now, I need to clean my backseat out so she can keep her foot elevated!

I hope her foot heals better then mine did.....I had a spiral break and they didn't cast it.....they gave me this wierd hard bottom shoe that made me feel like a dutch boy. So maybe they won't cast hers ? I hopp'd thru Walmart parking lot all thru the store and everywhere I went......crutches slowed me down and hurt my arms. She's young so it may heal VERY FAST and solid.....mine still hurts like crazy and swells up.....seen an ortho doc many times. She may get around better then ya think.....hope ya get a stress relief day......if I drank whiskey I'd more then likely fall and break sumthing or knock myself out bending over throwing up in the bushes Pam

Good luck.....hope it all turns out GREAT !!!

You know when the phone rings at 3:00 am, it ain't gonna be good.

The airline refused to let Sarah fly.  She's going to have to have a medical release from a doctor (at least for Lotz).  Right now, the American Consulate is providing assistance to her, but the problem is, it's a national holiday in Poland.  From what I understand (and right now my brain is pretty scrambled), it's going to take at least 48 hours before she can get on a plane.

She has insurance which she can use, but she's confused by the paperwork and so damned upset it's not even funny.  I can wire her money, but can't do it until tomorrow because of the holiday.  They've already contacted the embassy and they asked if she needed an emergency loan.

Going to do some research myself and see if I can find an airlines that I can get her on without that fucking release.

I called my boss this morning and left her a message that I woulnd't be back at work until I had Sarah home (or at least until I know she's on a flight home).  Don't know what they will say, but what the hell, fire me (I know she wouldn't, but her boss might force the issue and yes, I do have vacation time, not that it would matter, money wise).

Mama ain't doing to spiffy right now, been up since 3 this morning and don't know when I'll get back to sleep (tried to earlier, but soggy pillows are not fun to sleep on), have a lot to do.  I'm researching flights now.  And as soon as it's 8 on the east coast, need to start making phone calls.

Sorry about the whine.  Just think what Jimbo's having to put up with right now.

I'd feel the same way you do Delta.  To have a child stranded by red tape in another country.  Has any of the chaperones stayed behind with her?

My thoughts are with you and Jimbo right now.  Please keep us posted.

They don't have chaperones, you have to be 18 to do these programs.  She does have a friend or two that is still there and they are trying to do what they can.  I've started making calls, but there's just damned little I can do *here*.  I'm probably going to call British Airways and see if they have any restrictions about her flying.  If not, I can put her on a flight to London tomorrow (she'll have a 5 hour layover and have to get from Gatwick to Heathrow, but then she'd be able to fly to JFK.  If I have to, I'll fly her non-stop from JFK to Dallas so she won't have to worry about getting up on her foot.

Even worse, she is supposed to be starting her fall semester Monday.

I have about worried myself to a frazzle and the exhaustion meter is creeping up on full.  Jimbo went in to work  Embarassed, so I'm here all by myself.

Anyone care to join my pity party?

Oh boy, what a mess! If I had read your post last year Lisa wouldn't have gone to Germany. Her CH started in July and she left Aug 1st on 1000mg of depekote for a trip with U of California. We were a basket case all month but she did fine. No hits the whole month, just some shadows.

On the other hand my husband went to Costa Rica with some buddies on a surf trip about 15 yrs ago and broke his arm badly. He didnt tell me about it until he pulled in (after being stuck in snow). On top of it he lost his watch and wedding ring in the ER room and earlier in the week they totalled a rental car. He went to an orthapedic doctor first thing where he promptly said "This puppy needs surgery". My husband is a potter so not being able to use his arm for several months was a major financial blow. Eventually all was worked out and like my story,  this too shall pass. Hang in there!

By the way we are going to be driving our daughter to grad school too until she is weened from the recent high dose of depekote.

Good luck getting Sarah home!!

I'm not sure about Poland but on this side, call the school and make them aware of what's going on and that she will probably miss some of the first days. I wonder too if some of the abroad programs could help?? U of California and U of MD have a very extensive emergency plan. I kdon't think she went with a school but maybe they can help you out?? Unfortunately, this wasn't with her school, although she did go through a foundation here.  I've talked to them and the travel agency and it all comes back to, "well, she needs to see another doctor".  WTF?  Did you just hear me say that we had tried?

Now my head is hurting (no ch for me, just a measly old migraine sufferer).
