27th anniversary

My wife has been selling home baked gourmet cookie baskets for months now. It’s a low volume, clandestine, word of mouth thing she doesn’t want to take over her life. After a lot of late nights spent with the oven, she managed to save ~$300 and wanted to do something nice for our 27th anniversary. That’s coming up this Thursday. Yesterday she took me to a Spa for a facial and a back facial. What a great time we had. I never thought I’d enjoy being massaged, steamed and having my skin exfoliated. Two hours of pure pampering pleasure and a whole lot of laughing - mostly at my expense Then the beast decided I was having way too much fun. We’d finished our treatments and she was waiting downstairs for me to get dressed. I’d felt twinges throughout but nothing too serious. My cycle has been ramping up again in the last two weeks but why then? It was 11:00am! I’m usually a night hit person. Melatonin has been helping with that but I digress. Anyway, by the time I get to the register I’m riding a kip 4 - painful, annoying but survivable. I could almost pretend it wasn’t there - God knows I was trying. So we pay and leave. Next up was a trip up to our favorite seafood take out place for a take home lunch. I’m thinking, I need O2! But I don’t want to put a damper on our fun. She’s put so much effort and planning into this. I can’t let the beast take it away. We were going to take the food home anyway because of some other kid related logistics. We get the food and head home. It’s now 11:50am and I’m approaching kip 6/7 territory. Still not a banger, I’m still smiling but my eye tells another story. We get home and I now have to walk my 9 y/o son to a Birthday party down the street. I slam a Rock Star hiding in the bedroom like a kid sneaking a cigarette. I hand it to my co conspiring 4 y/o daughter telling her to put it in the trash and my son and I head out the door. When I get back my wife is holding the can and asks how my headache is. Seems my well trained 4 y/o daughter asked mom to wash out the can so she could recycle it ... busted! No sense pretending any more. I head back to the bedroom and fire up the cylinder. 15 minutes later the Rock Star and O2 have chased most of my HA away. We eat lunch and my day is looking a lot brighter. Our oldest daughter shows up and my wife and I head off to Newburyport to walk around the shops and spend some money. On the way to the car I stash another Rock Star next to the driver’s seat as insurance. Turns out I didn’t need it. The beast retreated for the rest of the day and I haven’t heard from him since We had a great time walking around, found some great bargains and finished the night with dinner at the 1640 Hart House in Ipswich. What a great day! What a great wife! This is the first time I can ever remember being able to wrestle with the beast and then get back on with a great day. I have the people here to thank for showing me how to live, love and laugh between the hits. It was not too long ago, before my diagnosis and finding this wonderful community, that I wouldn’t have had the tools or the knowledge to be able to handle the situation. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have all made a huge difference in the quality of my life and saved our anniversary day out in the process. -Dennis-

Wow Dennis, What a great day. And I want to thank you for inspiring me...showing me that it can be done by "staying cool", doing your part...and refusing to give in. Hope you have a wonderful night too.

Dennis - congrats to you and your wife on 27years of wedded bliss. Great to hear you managed the Beast so he couldn't ruin your special day. Now about that 4 year old in your house! It's actually good that she knows enough to rinse things and re-cycle them. She just needs to get tall enough to reach the taps so you won't get busted again. Carol

Congrats on 27 years and being able to enjoy it. I'd ask that you don't hide from your supporter, though. It would make me feel like I wasn't doing something right as a supporter. I'm glad you now have the tools to beat it back and not let it take your lives away from you. Congrats again - 27 years is a major accomplishment.
