Well, it seems that they might have missed the pocket where they think the miners are located and time is running out. And again, guess what? This mine had a solid safety record before it was bought by it's new owner, Mr. Robert Crandall. Since he took possession, there have been 64 violations. This man, Mr. Crandall, doesn't exactly have an exemplary record with the mines he owns. "Murray's Galatia mine in southern Illinois racked up at least 2,787 violations and more than $2.4 million in proposed fines from the Mine Safety and Health Administration over a two-year span, according to government records. That includes more than $1.4 million in proposed fines already this year. (Murray routinely challenges government fines and many are now on appeal. He has paid $588,000 and is delinquent on $116,000.) Why is it that running an unsafe mine with the fines, still more profitable than the cost of running them safely?? I will never understand why fines and other levies can't make it less profitable than the cost of making things safe.... but hey that's just me. I can't begin to imagine the horror the families are facing right now, may they all find peace somehow. Cat

| The question now becomes do they risk even more lives given the latest collapse? I feel so sorry for the trapped miners and their families. The words "safe" and "mine" don't go together. it is an inherently dangerous occupation. Sure they can strive to make it less dangerous but it will never be safe. -P.

I walked into the room on the tail end of the news report so I didn't hear the entire story. From the initlal reports I had seen after the first collapse the owner of the mine was stating that seismic activity caused the first mine collapse. What I just heard this afternoon is that the initial mine collapse caused the seismic activity.....totally different story. Something isn't jiving here.

Yep, short-sighted greed indeed Charlie. Every time I see that old bald-headed guy on T.V. and realize how many infractions he had for that mine in the past and sits there bald-faced lying about it makes me want to puke. so very sad...
