Here's the deal. My former employer called me tonight to ask me if I'd consider coming back on staff.  He says he has a proposal for me and I agreed to at least hear him out on Saturday Morning.
 
The compensation he mentioned does sound better than what I'm making, however, the position is actually a step backward in so far as my skills and abilities. Also, we didn't talk benefits, and one thing I do know is that I'm not about go back to being nothing more than his B2B telemarketer when I'm now a media consultant and Senior sales Rep.
 
I also don't want to find that this is another "carrot dangled".  I'd like some input as to how to present a counter proposal for employment.  I've never done that. I've negotiated half million dollar contracts, but this?  
 
I'd be commuting again, and that is an issue I'd negotiate as well as that he match my benefit and spiff package I have now.
 
Please any and all input as to what else to counter propose would be helpful.  I'm planning to put it all together tomorrow night so that I'm prepared for this mneeting.  It's not like I have anything to loose to talk to the guy but I could have everything to gain if I work this right.
 
All thoughts are welcome.

I'm a rightous dude, stubborn to the bone, but when it comes to my family and giving them food/shelter/healthcare etc etc, I have to put what I want and need into perspective.
 
Take the job, and if its not everything you want, look for a better job while you still have money coming in.
 
There's not an overwhelming amount of work up here right now, lots of folks are losing everything.
 
JMHO, not intended to offend, just love.

A few paychecks, that's funny.  I think more than half the country lives hand-to-mouth and can't even wait until payday.  Why do you think all the payday loan places have popped up all over the place?
 
I would talk to him, Pegg.  Let him know that you have advanced your career already and would consider taking a step backwards for a large amount of money.  He needs you, you don't need him.  If he wants you, he can pay you more than the job is worth, because he knows he is getting more than 'someone for the job'.

First of all Peg, why did you leave in the first place? If nothing has changed but the money, unless it is a lot more, I would be inclined to stay where you are. You have a lot to consider, such as 401K,  vacation, insurance, travel time, and upward potential. If this boss was a prick to work with in the past odds are he still is. But if you will have a brighter future with the old job, go for it. It may be a tough choice but in the end your gut instinct will guide you.

Also... have him contract you to work for three years,, doubling your salary each year and on departure... you will receive 52% of any stocks in addition to a 3 million dollar sevrence package.
 
Also... charge him $45,000.00 a day for the time you spend negotiating the deal, 3 days minimum.

What you need to do is to sit down with yourself  Wink and decide *what* it will take for you to go back with your old company.  Then, write it all down.  If you have to , take a written counter proposal with you.  AND, if I were you, I would request any type of hire proposal in writing with you and the ex-boss signing it.  IF the ex-boss ain't willing to put it in writing, then don't go.

Ask yourself if you would be happier at this job or the one you have. Talk to him and see what he is offering, can't hurt. As far as your counter proposal, show him what you make and the benefits that you have now, exaggerate a little too, and ask him if what he is offering is above and beyond that.

Pegg, a counter-proposal can be verbal tomorrow.  If you agree to something, then put it in writing. That should take a bit of the stress off for tomorrow.
 
Now, for tomorrow:  look back at what you were doing there before. is there anything you had to do or that happened that was a deal-breaker? if so, discuss it. decide what you want from this - money, title, etc. (for ex, my last promotion, I wanted the title - the money was a nice extra).
 
Figure out your current bennies and commissions along with your regular pay. Have those amounts in your head when you're talking with him.
 
and... it's okay to take a step back sometimes, especially if it's so you can take an even bigger one forward.  look at what he has to offer. negotiate where you need/want to.
 
and GOOD LUCK!!! sounds like the winds of change are finally upon you - something positive coming from all that crap you're going through at work.

1. Let him do all of the talking and offering, do not show your cards that day. If he even has an inkling of what you make and what your bennies are, the new offer will probably not be much higher.
 
2. If you have any idea what the company's profit margin is vs. sales, use it to your advantage.
 
3. Consider what it is going to cost you in fuel for your car, wear and tear etc. .485 per mile sounds right.
 
4. Consider the reasons he's asking you back. Is his job more difficult without you? Are the profits falling? Use this to your advantage to find out how badly he wants you back.
 
5. Are you happy and  content right now?
 
One thing I've noticed over the past couple of months is you don't vent about your current job like you did when you worked at the former one. Probably a lot less stressfull where you are now. Wink

Ok...here is my game plan with this whole thing.
 
Tomorrow I go in and hear the guy out.  Find out what his proposal is, and ask for it in writing if it's not already.  I will then ask what questions I need to, and state that I'll go over his offer and get back to him in a week.
 
At during that week, I'll be able to run the numbers, and also deduce my best stratagy for negotiaion with the man.  What he 'said" my compensation "could be" with the commission scale is what I'm on track to make where I am.  (I got paid today and figured out what it would be if I made the commissions that I made last year in the remaining 5 periods of this year.)
 
So I'll have a week to counter offer and if my guees if correct, he wouldn't have called me if he didn't really want me.  I'm in the power seat.
 
If nothing else, it will be a fun time watching him "beg"me to come back.

Keep in mind that this is a negotiation, and you don't have to answer him tomorrow, or even a week. Take good notes, and ask questions. It doesn't hurt to let on a bit of what you'd be looking for, that way you can both consider it in the meantime, and that will also give you a hint of how much he is really willing to give you. Then run the numbers.  
 
Also, as far as the commute, see if you can work from home, he supplies the computer/ laptop, fax machine, cell phone and extra phone line, etc. Most things you'd need to be in the office for, you could probably do from home. Remember, you're worth much more than  you think. Obviously, no one else can do this, so make sure he understands if he gets you, he is paying for you, and therefore getting what (skills) he is paying for.

Working from home is an option I'm planning to propose to him as well.  He's set up other remote workers in the past and I won't rule this out as an option.
 
I would have to be there at least weekly to give updates and give updates and one thing I would requre this time 'round would be full disclosure.  No more smoke screens.

I'm right there with you Sean and getting caught up in paying for gas on credit cards... How many of us are getting to the point where its do we eat...? or do we drive?...

So, I spent an hour and half talking to this guy this morning.  I let him go through his speach, listened to what his plans are, what he wanted to offer.  So after his laying out the new proceedures they are implimenting starting Monday, and what avenues they are starting to dip their fingers into, he asked me what I thought.  Before I could answer, he asked me what I was making right now.  
 
Thats where I took over.  I said..."I'm not going to tell you that Scott. But what I will tell you is that what you are offering would be a huge step backwards for me."  
 
After a little more fat chewing over what I do now yadda yadda yadda, he says..."If you knew this wasn't something that would interest you, why did you agree to meet?"
 
I took over again.  In a nut-shell, I told him...
 
"Scott, when you called, you didn't hide the fact that you have no sales force at all.  Your old key players are long gone, and it was clear that you didn't have any clue as to how far I've come and how much I've learned and the sheer experience I have.  You didn't have anything to offer me, but I know that I have alot I could offer you if the terms were right."
 
Then we went into discussions about the amount of training and ongoing traing I have under my belt at a corporate level, and that this is something each of his former sales reps had been lacking.  He knows i'm a closer, but in no uncertain terms did he get educated that I'm no longer a lead generator, B2B telemarketer.  He's lacking what I have to offer.  
 
One of his last questions to me was "...how much notice would you have to give?"  "Have to?  2 weeks standard, but because of the nature of my position I would want to give them 30 days.  At least offer them the ability to begin the hireing and interview process to fill the territory soon after I left."
 
We left it the "He'll be in touch, and he took my phone numbers."  
 
I think he knows that he is at a presipus.  He both can't afford TO hire me, nor can he really afford NOT to.

What I can take to a small busines with my training woulod be invaluble to him.  He'll either step up to the plate or not.
 
My gut tells me his sexist view wil overtake reason and he'll ignore what I have to offer.  He's such an ass that way. I doubt it will ever change..
