...with fruit flies.  I don't have any idea where they came from.  No over ripe fruits or veggies.  Garbage is taken out almost every damn day.  Every veggie brought in from the Farmers market is washed and put up in the fridge right away.

You also might want to check any cereal boxes or anything in cardboard boxes that you may have brought home from the grocery store.

I'll check those drains..thanks DD...cereals are transfered into plastic containers to keep them from going stale, so I don't think thats the issue.

There is no "thickest" infestation, they are all over.  They follow the source..either a glass of juice or wine, or a plate of food, but over the sink is a place I see them alot.

Just a side thought...I make the kids wash dishes.  Is it possible that they aren't rincing the sink well enough when they are done?

Blame the kids - it always works for me.

Check under beds, chairs, couches, in cupboards and even in the garbage pail.  Never know what might have been spilled and/or forgotten.

I found this online:

Fruit flies are especially attracted to ripened fruits and vegetables in the kitchen. But they also will breed in drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles and cans, trash containers, mops and cleaning rags. All that is needed for development is a moist film of fermenting material. Infestations can originate from over-ripened fruits or vegetables that were previously infested and brought into the home. The adults can also fly in from outside through inadequately screened windows and doors.

Fruit flies are primarily nuisance pests. However, they also have the potential to contaminate food with bacteria and other disease-producing organisms.

Prevention
The best way to avoid problems with fruit flies is to eliminate sources of attraction. Produce which has ripened should be eaten, discarded or refrigerated. Cracked or damaged portions of fruits and vegetables should be cut away and discarded in the event that eggs or larvae are present in the wounded area. A single rotting potato or onion forgotten at the back of a closet, or fruit juice spillage under a refrigerator can breed thousands of fruit flies. So can a recycling bin stored in the basement which is never emptied or cleaned.

I never replaced the garbage disposer when it crapped out after 47 years. I live alone and don't generate much smelly stuff but put stuff like old food, apple peelings and the like, in a bag it the freezer. No flies.

Bleach and ammonia..Windex if nothing else our to help.

Hang one of those fly traps near the area where most are hanging out. It'll rid the majority while you locate the source.

I feel for you, Pegg.

When I lived in uni halls of residence, I had to deal with lots of fruit flies. My flatmates used to leave the trash can lie around for days... and naturally, during warm summer days, we got about zillion fruit flies.

Here's what we did as well: we placed water to a container (glass, box, whatever) and bit of fairy or other washing liquid. The fruit flies used to adore that! It didn't stop them from arriving, but it did help out nicely. Smiley

And now, when we have veggie-loving guinea pigs in the house, a fly-eating plant in the kitchen and the garbage can is emptied regularly, I've seen just two fruit flies and no signs of an invasion. Smiley

1/2 glass of red wine vinegar with a couple of drops of dish soap in it. Place them around and viola, flies be gone.

We finally traced it down to a palm tree in the sun room.  Moved it outside and all is better.
