I just acquired a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. No clue what the username nor password is to boot up the OS. Is it possible to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh OS ?

1. Boot up the computer in "safe" mode. You do this by starting the computer and keep tapping the f8 key until it gives you a black and white menu. The first choice is "safe mode". Click on that and it will begin to boot. It will look a little funny because it's not loading any drivers. 2. Next log on as "administrator". 3. When you get to the desktop, go to "control panel", then choose "user accounts". 4. Choose "change an account". 5. Choose any account that says "password protected" except administrator. 6. Choose "remove password" 7. reboot your computer. If the only account that is password protected is the administrator account, then you're screwed. The Old Man

Someone may come along with Linux info, hopefully. You can still play with the one you have 'til then, unless there's a Fisher Price recall on it.

| Depending on the distro it maybe very hard to get in. Since this was smart criminal the file system maybe be encrypted too. If you want to see what is on the file system 9 if it isn't encripted) try booting with a Knoppix disc. Of course the BIOS may be password protected so you can't boot from CD. In that case you will have to crack that first to even install another OS. Also the hard drive maybe password protected meaning you may have to change that too. When you have cleared any passwords you can finally install the OS of your choice. Paul

If you can get into the BIOS, you can probably reload it from the backup partition on the hard drive. Roland.

Depends on whether you are talking about a BIOS password or something else. You could sent it out to me... I would try to get it working. Easier than trying to talk your ape-smart ass through it.

| Yes. Forget about cracking any passwords. Get an OS of your choice, Linux or not, and install over the existing OS. Make your own passwords. Yer done.

Would be interesting to try guessing the username and crack the password to see what is stored in there? Wow, the possibilities are endless ! Might even find some Xrated piccies ?

If the BIOS will let you boot from a CD. Put another OS on it. Either BSD, Linux, Solaris 10 or MS Windows XP Sp2. MS Vista won't work on it, so don't even try. MY preference since you didn't ask would be, Solaris 10 or Fedora 7 Linux. Have fun.

| I'm sure you will, unless the cops erased the thing before you got it. "The search ain't over 'till you find the porn". I guess if all else fails, you could put it in the garage next to the fridge. Best, George

The password is in the bios. A computer geek I know is going to try short circuiting the mother board. Ever hear of that anyone?
