Rally Time of the Year

Every August city of Jyväskylä, my now home town, is taken over by loud noise, lots of people and complete hulabaloo - that is Neste Oil Rally. It brings Rally world series into town, which means that all the top rally drivers, teams, cars, fans and other folkes arrive to this town for few days. And it's starting tomorrow! The Rally posters and flags have been up for weeks, but the rest is coming up now. The shopping street Kauppakatu is now an outside market place and I bet that once the races begin, the noise will take over as the cars come and go and the loud speakers reveal the events and results EVERYWHERE. It's sort of madness. This year it seems that we won't be having rally quests; last year 3 of Timo's friends came over. This year Timo will probably go see some of the races with his brother-in-law. And I... I'm going to see it on TV, that's enough for me. I bet I can hear enough of rally stuff when I go to the city centre to run some errans... So, those of you who follow sport news and rally in particular, watch closely, because then you'll get to see bit of my now home town! The place where the winners will be rewarded in the end is close to our house; it's located about 10 minutes walk away. Sanna

It has begun. Rally has invaded our streets and our city. I can hear the noise inside our appartment... I don't need to leave the house! Timo & his brother-in-law are going to see some of the races tomorrow. Here's more: http://www.nesteoilrallyfinland.fi/en/ Sanna

Ok, it's official. I'm a rally widow. Timo is spending his day off watching rally races. I won't be seeing him today... He and his brother-in-law are going to see as many races as they possibly can. Those 2 special TV programs with direct access to races is enough of me... and, you know, hearing all the noise day and night as the race cars pass our house on their way to the pit or service park area at the city centre. But, seriously, when sports broadcasts come in your country, check it out if they're doing a segment about the rally. This Jyväskylä's rally, Neste Oil Finland, is the biggest of all the rally races there is, so they might. And you just might see a glimpse of my home town! Sanna

How exciting. I am a "race of any kind junkie" Hopefully the noise isn't too bad. Is Timo going to take any pics while he is there? I would love to see them. Aubmari

I think that Timo will at least try to take some pics. He left for the rally so quickly, so I didn't notice if he took his camera bag. But I know that he has his mobile with him and he took some pics with that one last year. Timo's brother-in-law, Petri, is taking pics for sure! If I get my hands on some pics, I'll post the best ones, I can promise that one. Sanna

I bet that was fun to watch live. Do the fans line up on the side of the course or is it done a little more safely than some car race rallies I watch on tv. I for one would not stand 10 feet away from a car sliding sideway's at 60 mph past me. I like the safety barriers and fences between me and a 2000lb. car. Hope Timo enjoyed it and the Guinea pigs aren't too upset with the noise from the cars. I am safely watching the Formula 1 race live in HD from my couch! Barry

Barry, The guinea pigs were more freaked out when the fire department arrived to cut one branch of our neighbours' tree than they were about rally, luckily for us. Aguess they got used to the car noises, because the first ones arrived on Thursday. Greetings from Timo: he and his brother-in-law had a blast watching the rally live on Friday! They went there to watch it with a motorcycle, so they didn't get caught in the worst traffic jams. Those rally cars drive FAST. What I heard, at least 137kms/hour! There were 23 races this year and there are certain places where the audience can't be - those dangerous spots are clearly marked. Other than that, its up to you where you're standing/sitting. There has been accidents over the years, but I cannot recall if some of them have happened here in Finland. Back in here safety comes first. That's why the officials had added extra safety fences to certain parts to slow the cars down, just in case. Sanna
