Mad squirrel!

Apparently it's not only our guinea pigs who are bit nuts, because Keskisuomalainen (local newspaper here in Middle Finland) and both national newspapers, Ilta-Sanomat and Iltalehti published a story about mad squirrel today. Grin

This squirrel (yes, that's the actual pic of it) has been terrorising a small grocery store in quite unique way: it hits the chocolate shelf and eats as many candy bars and chocolate eggs than it possibly can before customers or sales clerks will spot it. Grin

It's one sneaky rodent, because it enters the store with customers and leaves as soon as it has filled its small tummy with chocolate. The sales clerks said that its favourites are Kinder chocolate eggs - kiddies Easter favourites. It even does something with the tiny toys found inside the eggs... laugh

When my son was very young I hid all his Easter candy in those plastic eggs outdoors.  When Easter morning came we had to fight the squirrels for the plastic eggs!  Seems they could smell the chocolate and jelly beans inside and would gnaw through the plastic to get to the goodies!

It was the last time mom was dumb enough to put out chocolate for the rodents!

Sanna,

That is hysterical..."it enters with the customers"!!!

I have always been terrified of squirels...and everyone laughs. Embarassed

One attacked me...it jumped on my head and wouldn't get off of me.  It was hanging on the stucco(??) above the front door...and I was carrying stuff in the house holding the door open with my back....and it plopped on my head and went crazy.

Somehow a squirrel got into my basement this winter.  I borrowed a trap and caught him within 20 minutes. (I guess it was a "him"...not quite sure how to tell and really don't care to know)

Took the trap outside and let him go.

Next morning, guess who was back in my basement?  Set the trap again and this time it took 3 hours to trap this critter.  Then I called John and he took Rocky to a state park about 2 miles from here....at least that is what he told me.

That's not the only chocolate-loving squirrel I've heard about: at my graduation party back in 2000, the principal told us a story about a squirrel who ate candy bars at the roof of the small newsstand he worked for! laugh

Sherri,
I don't think that a matter to laugh about. We all have our fears. hug

I've seen lots of cute squirrels, but I know that they can do a lot of damage, too. One female journalist wrote just the other week how she was attacked by a squirrel too. She was working for a summer theatre production at the time and was performing on stage when that squirrel bite her.

Baby squirrels used to eat our TV cables years ago at our summer cottage. They stopped only after dad made sure that each and every tiny hole in the summer cottage's roof had an iron net to block it.

Ok, this story is now running internationally! Grin
You were among the first to hear about this mad squirrel. Now it has made it to international fame, thanks to other wedsites, the rally and Reuters.

The mad squirrel has now a name: Kinder! The sales clerks named it Kinder, because it prefers to eat Kinder eggs. Grin

The squirrel stroke again last night and that store, Siwa right at Jyväskylä's city centre, is now getting more and more interested customers who want to see Kinder the squirrel in action! laugh

I'm planning to run some errans later. Perhaps I should go there as well and see if Kinder is eating chocolate eggs again... Grin

The tiny grocery store is not its only target, nope, it has stolen bread from senior citizen centre as well! Grin
