Hey all,

While I was at the party in the park I boarded my sick dog at my vets office and asked him to do some blood work on her.Well I just received the call shes not good. Her white blood count is off the charts low.Bottom line is shes not going to make it.I think I will tell my daughter that Jade is going to a house that has a doctor that can look after her, there is no reason to tell her anything else.Don't you agree? So I'm going there to say good buy and maybe hold her while the doctor does his thing tonight. While writing this I'm holding back the tears.I love that mut.She will be greatly missed.

Sorry to read that you need to do this.  Losing a long loved pet is always a hard thing to do.

As far as your question:  you know your home situation and potential emotional strain.  Your call.

Dave - While it sucks, I think you need to find a way to tell her the truth. In a way a little girl understands.

This might help:

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am sorry to hear that. Losing a pet can be like losing a member of the family.  Cry

How old is your daughter? Sometimes it is better to be honest with them and tell them what is going on.

My daughter is 4 and I have always been open with her about death. You would be amazed at how well they can do with it.  Case by case though I am sure.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

Brew thanks for the advise and the story it was very moving I am going to seriously consider it.It's just that she keeps asking me wheres Jade and I'm not sure how to answer her.She looks at me so seriously.Well I will play it by ear and ease her into it.My 17 year old is going to come with me tonight that will be some comfort for me at least and I will be some comfort for her.She is very upset as well.

Dont hold back the tears bud. Its your dog.

Maybe tell her the angels needed a puppy for a present for God and Jade was the best one out there so she went with the angels.

Then get her, and you, a new puppy.

That's pretty good advice that Don has given you.  It's truthful but in a gentle fashion.

Kids are a whole lot more clever than we sometimes think they are and they can actually handle bad news when it's presented to them by people they love and trust.  Of course she'll cry and be upset and we all hate that for our little ones, but better the truth than for her to find out later that you once lied to her about something very important.   It speaks to an issue of trust.

I'm sorry you and your family are having to go through this.

Sending hugs

not knowing the age of your daughter is hard but I asked an 8 and 10 year old. They both went with honesty. They both liked Dons explanation as do I.She also said that if she thought the dog was at a doctors she would always want to see her.she also said it would be hard to think the dog is sick and they can't help it so it has to stay with a doctor she doesn't know.kindly truethful.just don't say stuff like she just went to sleep and didn't wake up.too scary for kids who also have to go to sleep every night.maybe she can write something and keep it with a picture of Jade so she can look back and remember her beloved Jade.

Well the deed is done.Everybody keeps telling me I did the right thing so then why do I feel like the executioner my 17 year old Alisha and I where balling our eyes out as she went.

I mis spoke earlier when I said her blood count was low it was off the charts high it was 61000 ths it is supposed to be 15000.My vet said in 40 years of being a vet he has never seen it that high.He also said that the specialist that did the blood work said if they would have opened her up she would have been loaded with tumors.

God she looked so helpless.I sorry I'm rambling on.Thanks for  your eyes and ears.

P.S. Brew I took your advise and the advise of all who said to tell Trina the truth.Your all right the truth is the only way.And for all wondered about Trinas age shes 4

Having been thru the same thing a couple of times, I know all too well about feeling like the executioner.

I found myself second guessing my decision but each time I did, I came to the same conclusion.  It had to be done because my beloved pets were suffering and I would have been selfish to have tried to keep them with me any longer.

From the information that the vet relayed to you, there was nothing else you could have done.

I hate the fact that our pets don't live longer.  Just doesn't seem fair does it but knowing we gave them the best lives, tons of love and affection will hopefully ease the pain.

It hurts like hell to lose our buddies and even though the pain never really goes away, it will subside with time.

I wish there was more that I could do or say but please know that we understand and feel for you and your family.

You're a caring and compassionate man, Dave (as I wipe a few tears from eyes). You did for Jade what she couldn't do for herself, and you are a hero in my eyes.

Coincidentally, we found a 3-week-old kitten living in our woodpile this evening, and I took him to the humane society. Once they nurse him back to health, they told me he is prime adoption material. The circle of life.

You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

You did the kindest thing that you could have done for your beloved pet.  They can't tell us when they hurt, but we know that if Jade was full of tumors, the pain was soon to get bad.

Honesty with children is always right.....just be sure not to offer more than they ask.

This is such a difficult time for you and your family...I'm so sorry.

Aww Dave, It breaks my heart you and your family are going through this.
Loss really hurts, especially when it's a beloved pet. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers and I'm sure you will find a way to let your youngest daughter know that she was not abandoned by Jade, and that Jade would still be with you if she could.

with warm regards,
Tony
