A question from my wife (Herblady)
« on: Jul 6th, 2007, 4:28pm »

Hello everyone:

As some of you may know, via the chat here, my wife is starting up a small business selling herbs and bath products.  (This is not an advert, but if interested, PM please).

We were discussing how some smells tend to be triggers for my CH, and she was wondering if that was a common thread with CH.  Unscented soap and lotion are easy to find, but unsented bubble bath, shampoo, and conditioner are difficult to find, if you can find them at all.  Therefore, we were wondering if there would be any point in making a line of unscented bath products, or if normal bath products don't seem to be a problem.

Additionally, I wanted to list some of my "trigger smells," and ask that you do the same.  Perhaps there's some correlation there that bears further research.

Car exhaust
freshly cut grass
sweet floral perfumes
raw gasoline fumes
some artificial fibers and plastics, ie. eg. new vinyl shower curtains or new carpeting
nail polish and remover (acetone?)

That's all for now, but I am curious about your responses and look forward to reading them.

Wishing you PF days and nights,

Ray

Diesel fumes
Vicks vapo products of any kind...I would use the nasal thingie because of the congestion not understanding that was in fact making things much worse.

Other than that I have no 'consistent' odor triggers, sometimes some will, sometimes they won't.

I personally would LOVE an entire unscented bath/spa product line, as not only do I concern with my CH, but I have psoriasis, and most of the perfumes used will make it much worse.

Anything for sensitive skin in that product line??

I'm lucky, smells were never a trigger for me. Which is suprising sense my nose takes up most of my face!!!! My wife has the keenest sense of smell on the planet so I can't wear any kind of aftershave, scented deodorants, scented dryer sheets, anything!

Zero olfactory triggers for me.

Only trigger I know of is alcohol. Everybody says nitroglycerine will do it, but I've never had the pleasure.

Cat:  I've passed it on to my lovely wife, who hopes to PM you back tonight sometime.

It's interesting that the responses so far with many of the triggers involving petro-chemicals in some way.

The triggers I've listed only seem to be partial triggers for me, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, and only when I'm in my "high hit season."

I will say this, when I'm having a hit, odors are magnified, seemingly, hundreds of times.  Like I can smell the neighbors cat box....

Wishing you PF days and nights,

Never had any triggers, I guess it was God giving me a break for giving me 32 years of chronic fucking pain!

What kind of "loving God" would let people suffer like that?

The detergent isle in the supermarket, the perfume area in stores like Macy’s and those shops that sell scented candles are all places for me to stay away from.

Poking my head in for a second....

Do you think it's the smells themselves, or does it have to do with the INTENSITY of the smell?

The detergent aisle in the store REEKS, and so do those scented candle places...YUCK!  Do you also have a problem with just one box of detergent, or just one scented candle?

I'm also finding the petrochemical connection interesting...almost makes ya wish you were amish......

I'm a supporter rather than a sufferer, so no pain triggers for me.

HOWEVER, I'm very sensitive to a lot of smells and would LOVE an unscented herbal line of products.  I like to smell like ME, not the products that came out of the bottle in the morning.

I grew up in the petrochemical valley in Sarnia Ontario.  When they are spilling styrene, polystyrene, napalm, and various other wonderful chemicals, I am not surprised to a supersensitivity to them.

I am most interested in what you wife is doing Ray and have already responded to her PM and questions.

I have 2 children that have psoriasis and are in remission, so it is an opportunity for me to ensure that the dangers of flare remain as impotent as possible.

No scent or food triggers that I'm aware of--and I've tried to isolate same over the years.

The detergent aisles are so strong with the smell that you can sometimes taste it. Maybe it's a chemical reaction? Heck, I don't know. A quick trip through the aisle is ok but a stop of more that 30 seconds and I'll feel a shadow starting.

One box of detergent, such as we have by the washer at home, doesn't bother me. One candle, if it's in another room, doesn't bother me. I don't like to be in the same room with the burning candle though.

Lavender and bleach.

If the smell of bleach is overwhelming or for a long period of time...ex: I had squeezed gel cleanser with bleach in the bathtub, the phone rang and distracted me from it...all nite I kept getting hit over and over, until I realized I had left cleanser in the tub...I held my breath, scrubbed and rinsed the tub and closed the bathroom door....it helped.
