I had to fire an employee today, he had worked here right at 90 days and in that time had missed more work than I have in the last 3 years. He was 19, married and just had a kid. Why would anyone in that position not want to work? I had made plans to go down and work at the home facility for a month which would have given me time to spend with my dad. That is now been pushed back until I have a new guy trained. That really pisses me off to no end. I just don't understand the mind set of the younger guys these days. Makes me want to hire an illegal, I bet he would show up. Damnit !!!!!!!!!!

Don't lose heart. Good employees are out there. I see the extremes too. But I've found some really good people in the process. It's all about the interview. -Dennis-

Good employees are very hard to find. My manager is kicking himself (HARD) for hiring this Steve guy 2 months ago. 35 years old and can't retain a single piece of information he is told. Jim is having to hold his hand on each and every account just so we don't loose the revenue. He spends more time out of the office doing personal errands than selling anything. Jim is selling and booking 90% of Steve's orders. Jim writes 100% of the credits when Steve screws up (which is almost daily). Trouble is, we are down one sales person right now as it is, with one open territory and to get rid of Steve would make 2 open territories. We can't lose that much revenue and stay in business.

Work ethics have gone by he wayside. People want positions these days but don't want to do anything for the company to earn the titles. If the work gets done (half way) fine -- if it doesn't "oh well...." I don't understand it either, but we're raising a bunch of idiots (like in Congress) these days. I still blame it on our educational system. We QUIT teaching kids the basics and have started teaching them to be politically correct. They can't read, write and cypher these days without some mechanial thingy to help them. But they sure can work electronic gadgets. Oh well, I've got to go to the bank and see if anyone can figure out why I have an ACH debit on my statement that shouldn't be there. Hopefully, ya'll won't have to post any bail money for me. It's only $50 but it MY $50! Yesterday I had to straighten the Appraisal district out. The little girl down there didn't know how to put my property in the computer right and had it all screwed up. We had to get her supervisor involved, but I didn't get put in jail and got my property taxes down to where they SHOULD have been last January when I went down there the FIRST TIME. Good help is just hard to find these days. I'll miss ya Matt. Was looking forward to seeing you next week.... Hugs BD

Matt, I feel your pain. My husband and I have owned our own service company for 15 years. Hiring and retaining good employee's is our #1 business concern. Best advise I can give...........Hire slow and fire fast. Beth P.S. I have lots of stories . Will post the most shocking later when I'm at home.

Matt, that kind of gave me hope that the likes of me (= hard-working, responsible, trustworthy) will still be needed at today's world's job market. I hope that the new guy will turn out to be a great one! Hugs, Sanna

To me, the WORSTEST part of being in management is firing people! I ALWAYS hated doing it, even when I desperately needed to fire someone! When I was in manufacturing, I had a saying: "For each machine operator that I want, I have to hire ten people, before I get one that is good, and stays ... " I find the same now in maintenance, and also in retail sales ... It is frustrating to say the least ... SOME of my employees, thought I was just an a$$hole ... After all, I have that silly thought, that I can't seem to shake, that I want an employee to ACTUALLY do some work, for that check I give them! They thought that if they occasionally showed up, and just put in time, they were still entitled to a full paycheck. GEEZE!! I guess I am an A$$HOLE!! Chuck

| Want a job? I'd hire ya. I have noticed that most clusterheads are hard working people. We don't call off every time we get a little sick. We take a beating and keep on ticking........... Chuck, you are an a$$hole...........making people work for their money....Geez..don't you know that their time is valuable, and you should pay for just being blessed with their presence?

I'm ALWAYS at work. (Work=Home) Every job I've EVER been hired for I was told I was overqualified. Have the qualifications gone down or is a bachelor's degree with a lively brain behind it considered overqualified these days?

Good riddance to bad rubbish on that dude, he'll reap what he sows in life. We just hired a young engineering student as an intern. Definitely a C student at the university but he uses his head, he works hard, has a great attitude, great to work with- what a breath of fresh air.

Bummer. I can't imagine not wanting to work with a family too... but this seems to be how the kids are these days. They expect Mom and Dad to bail them out of everything... Sorry that put you back some time with your Dad... better days ahead... next time really, screen them employees... Ree

| That would be brilliant! Now all I need is greencard... I just applied to be a PR representive for Finland's mail company and as journalist trainee to a magazine called SCIENCE. Let's just see what will happen! I have no idea when they let you know about the first one, but I will have to wait until September about the second one. Sanna
