Hi Jonny been awhile. I do have guns and do a lot of competition shooting. I have shot on the NY State Pistol team and in the National Matches at Camp Perry Ohio. I think some people should have guns but not everyone. Some people would end up shooting themself or the wrong person. So we need laws to protect our selfs. Anyway I hope you are doing well, TerryS

I think if the average mugger knew he had a 50% chance of being shot he would not mug someone. Id would pose some interesting questions if everyone carried. If you were out drinking would you get a CUI (carring while intoxicated...LOL) The highest crime rates are where the citizens are easy pickings. That says a lot. -P.

The problem with getting rid of guns is then ONLY the bad guys would have them.Dont forget they make them all over the world and the people who do it the right way,you know like register them and all that good stuff those would be the only guns they would take away..Gun control sucks .Long live the NRA. Guns are fun, and impossible to control. I think they are a bit overrated as nightstand self defense but there is the psychological factor. It didn't hurt my grandmother. Charlie

An armed society is a polite society. I carried a gun for 30 years in a previous life. When I retired I couldn't wait to get rid of the weight on my belt. As I look at what's going on in society I am more and more convinced that it's time to go and get a permit and start carrying just for protection.

A 38 special in the hand beat a 357 on the dash for me a few years ago when a guy tried to hold me up as I took the day's cash to the bank from my service station. "The sherriff went on TV news in Greenville County SC telling business owners to arm themselves and to be willing to shoot in self defense due to the large number of armed robberies that were happening. Crime dropped to nearly nothing for about 6 months. Jerry

I cannot agree more, The SA government enacted huge laws regarding the possesion of legal fire arms which make it almost impossible for the average citizen to own a gun. This was done ostensbly because of the high number of gun related deaths annually. fascinatingly enough this has had absolutely no effect on the number of deaths because they were caused by illegally owned guns (AK47's) in the first place so the only segment of society that is really pleased with the law are the criminals. But the bleeding heart liberals continue their noise!

Gun Control does not magically turn deranged predators, criminals, gangs, drug addicts/traffickers and violent individuals into law-abiding citizens. Gun Control does not change a “revolving door” justice system repeatedly turning predators and criminals loose on law-abiding citizens to commit violent crimes over-and-over again. Gun Control severely diminishes the right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves, their families, and property. Gun Control renders law-abiding citizens easy prey for violent scum and oppression by guaranteeing that victims offer minimal resistance. There is no evidence to back claims that Gun Control/outright bans make society safer. Despite significant evidence that Gun Control actually empowers the scum of society, advocates continue spewing false claims that limiting and/or eliminating legal gun ownership reduces crime and violence. These facts must force law-abiding citizens to be extremely suspicious of what the real agenda of Gun Control is. An unarmed citizenry is not just limited in its right to self-defense it is defenseless against tyranny and oppression. Over the last 6 administrations we’ve witnessed significant destruction of the U.S. Constitution, individual rights/freedoms and National Sovernty. I’d hate to see how far the “New World Order” would be if the governing elite had nothing to fear. History has proven that there is significant reason to fear governments that disarm law-abiding citizens "for their own safety". The most effective crime deterrent is a firearm in the hands of a law-abiding citizen with good aim - but just as important - Stay Armed and Stay Free. Tom

I have always stayed completely away from this topic but this time I have to jump in. Truthfully, I've remained on the fence with gun control, looking at both sides for a long time before taking a stance. Tom, you have nailed it perfectly. "Gun Control does not magically turn deranged predators, criminals, gangs, drug addicts/traffickers and violent individuals into law-abiding citizens. Gun Control does not change a “revolving door” justice system repeatedly turning predators and criminals loose on law-abiding citizens to commit violent crimes over-and-over again." Guess its time I get over my wussiness and learn to shoot one. Jen

Ok, since Jen jumped into a subject she normally avoids so will I. I own many guns. My guns have three uses. I hunt though not for trophies. I play; sporting clays, range fire etc. The third use stands alone and is IMHO only. They are to be shown, brandished, pulled, whatever you want to call it ONLY if you fully intend to use the weapon to stop an imminent threat to yourself or other innocent people from an armed attack. I strongly believe that people that have not been properly trained in their use should never own one. I also believe that if you ever need to pull one for defense that you had better be ready to kill with all of the consequences of that act. If you are not sure that you can take a life in defense of yourself or someone else I believe that you should stick to other means and tools and not own a gun. ............Tim

| I also strongly recommend training in firearms safety, handling and use. Most reputable gun clubs offer NRA endorsed firearms training programs and many also offer NRA sponsored firearms self-protection classes geared towards women and even children. This will help new firearms owners determine what type/caliber of firearm to purchase, how to comfortably/safely conceal a firearm to ensure accessibility and prepare them to use it if necessary. After that shooting a few rounds at the range once a month or so will help maintain an owners familiarity with the operation of a firearm and their accuracy. Children are difficult to deceive and naturally curious, don’t hide firearms from children – educate them. One of the biggest mistakes inexperienced gun owner parents make is to keep the "secret gun" in the house. When your children are capable of accepting/following instruction and grasping the basic concepts of safety, responsibility and self-defense, take them with you to training or to the range when you practice. Children are fully capable of safely handling and using a firearm and training is critical. It's a great way to spend structured time with them, familiarizing them with firearm safety/use and building self-confidence through your supervision and trust. This helps eliminate the potential for a child’s natural curiosity and inexperience with firearms to lead to disaster. Have them shoot something good – melons or milk jugs filled with water are ideal ways to graphically demonstrate the power of those “little” bullets, implanting a healthy respect for a firearms capabilities and establishing that firearms are not toys. | Good and poignant post Tom. When I was growing up we had firarms in the house. My father kept a loaded 38 in his closet. We were told it was there and FORBIDEN to touch it and we never did. We also were never given toy guns as children. Guns were not to be played with. We were allowed to shoot them at an early age but were always well instructed and supervised. I got my first SW 357M when I was 16. Education of firearms is the most important thing. -P.
