A friend just moved back to Ohio with his new girlfriend from Louisiana and we met her this weekend. She isn't real thrilled with this area and don't think she will survive winters here. Anyhow......she said we do things SO DIFFERENTLY here and she misses home and not real happy here ....she said she misses family and friends. Anyhow.....she said she lost everything in the Katrina storm. Her and her boyfriend told us that the levy that totally flooded her area was "intentially" broken to save the town of New Orleans and the rich areas. They both SWEAR by it.....sort of shocked me cuz of how things don't always happen as you were told or thought and makes you really THINK !!! True or false Pam

It's happened in the past. From a review of "Rising Tide" by John M. Barry.... http://www.olemiss.edu/orgs/SGLC/MS-AL/book.htm "In the late 1920's, New Orleans was controlled by powerful banking families, all members of the clubs, who exerted enormous control over business and political decisions affecting the city. As a result of having this power, members of these clubs decided to intentionally dynamite the levee to lower the flood level in New Orleans and protect the commerce of the city. The Corps originally proposed destroying the levee in the wake of the 1922 flood when they advised the New Orleans financial community that, if the city was ever seriously with a flood, blowing a hole in the levee would save the city. In the end, the decision to dynamite the levee was made by three New Orleans banking leaders in the boardroom of the Canal Bank. Unfortunately, the result was the flooding St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes. Barry sadly notes, as two engineers had predicted, the destruction of the parishes was unnecessary and one day's wait would have shown it to be so." I know it's been bandied about that this may have happened during Katrina as well. There are accounts by residents that explosions were heard prior to the flooding. But I don't know of any convincing evidence that it's true. George (with N.O. relatives)

Thanks for the info.....cuz this girl lived rite near the levy that she said WAS BLOWN UP to save the town. I was so shocked cuz I had never heard it before or even THOUGHT of such a thing before. She said her two story aprt was flooded OVER the top.......she tried to get back but they wouldn't let anyone back in for a while and when she FINEALLY got to go back home the place was GONE. It was demolished and bulldozed over and she lost everything she owned. Kind of a sad story cuz she LIVED IT......and SHE WOULD KNOW cuz she was THERE when all this happen'd. It made me look at things alot differently.......her and our friend told us about it as if it was OLD NEWS........but they both said it DEFINETLY HAPPEN'D and they were there near the explosions. Shock at the awe Pam This world is not what we think it is !!

If I recall correctly, reading in the International Herald Tribune, the FEMA Director at the time-a good friend of your president-had no experience in handling disasters and had recently been fired from his previous job as a director of horse shows-politians, and not just yours, are a strange bunch. Sorry for the lady's loss. (After expressing condfidence in the FEMA Director just after the New Orleans disaster occured, President Bush had to ask him to resign when it became clear to EVERYONE that the man was in the water over his head with his job).

While I can't say it did or did not happen, it seems unlikely that they would just blow the levee without prior notice and evacuating the affected area. If they did and people died in the resulting flood, it would be a case of mass murder. Even with the corruption of the local government and the stupidity of Ray Nagin, I just can't see that happening. BUT, then again, I don't understand why all those buses sat unused when they could have been used to evacuate people with no other way out.

| Gator, There are rumors that the levee was blown. At this point, nothing has been proven. As to *why* all those busses were left unused, that's a question for our dear gubner and Ray Nagin. As the representative for that area, Sister Mary (that's Mary Landrieu for non-Louisianians) stated, right after the debacle, "we can't get the drivers to drive the busses on a good day, think we could have gotten them to drive now?".

Yeah, I've heard the excuses about the buses. I just have a hard time believing them. It's not like this thing crept up on them in the night like a tornado can do here in Oklahoma. They had days worth of advance warning that the hurricane was coming. It's a toss up as to what's sadder, the local government abandoning it's people or the people's failure to help themselves and their neighbors. That's not the Louisiana I grew up in, though admittedly, I grew up in the country and not in the city. Out in the country, we took care of each other, cause that's all we had - each other.

I think the only evacuaton plan was.....if yer feet are gettin wet then RUN............and the levy's explosions ment run harder faster. The friends SWEAR by the fact that they WERE BLOWN but I suppose it was a last minute dicision out of despiration by SUMONE in charge that's marcede's tires were gettin wet. One for all all for themselves Pam This story still just BLOWS ME AWAY....all new to me and these friends LIVED THERE where it all happen'd. I know it sounds crazy if not down rite rediculous and could not be possible and not sure I'd totally believe it myself IF the friends hadn't been the ones that told us about it from there.....a been there seen it lived thru it story ordeal. Believe it or not !?

While nowhere near as wild as the ridiculous 9-11 paranoia, it sounds a little unlikely; not impossible but unlikely this time. Charlie
