That didn't happen from licking it off her hands. She would have had to drink it from the bottle. 85% -- not possible.

But, I did hear the sky was falling later on today.

My wife gives that stuff to my daughter.  I hate it.  She thinks she doesnt have to wash her hands because she can wipe some of this junk on her hands.

85% seems impossible, though.  Even if a 4 year old drank a full pint of EverClear, there is no way it can get that high.

Drunk is 1%.  Really fucked up drunk is 2%  Alcohol poisoning is like at 3-4%  There is no way this kid's BAC was 85%.

However, with that being said, I am going downstairs to throw that crap away.

My point is that on rare occasions any product can be used incorrectly or a kid poisoned. Go all the way to the bottom of the snopes link and you will see that in the end they are effective in stopping the transmission of illnesses. These kinds of sensationalized stories, while partially true, stir fear of a lot of inane and useful items in the world.

Spreading additional fears has become entertainment in our society.  The sources of most fears are easily remedied.

I'm sure she meant 85% of the level of intoxication which I'm sure wouldn't be much in a toddler.

This product is something people use everyday and have around the house. I don't see giving people a heads up on the possibilities as a bad thing. She didn't bash the product or tell anyone to stop using it, all she did was give an account of what happened to her daughter because of the ingestion. I don't see this as a sensationalized story at all.

Does this hand sanitizer stuff contain grain alcohol or wood alcohol?

And B - it's 0.1% is drunk (most states it's less, like 0.08%), 0.2% is super messed up. At about 0.5% - one half of one percent - alcohol poisoning will take place. It's a little different from person to person, but people have died at less than 0.5%.

It's not pollen, it's tree sperm Tongue

And I don't believe there is any sensationalism or fear mongering occuring here.  It is a wise and just warning for parents of all children.

As the mother of a 6, 13 and 15 y/o, Ayden (6) isn't likely to touch the stuff, it's all I can do to get him to wash his hands so the sanitizer is a great alternative and he refuses to use that as well.  We spent most of this past winter with a multitude of GI and respiratory illnesses in the house.

The 13 and 15 y/o however are as likely to drink the stuff on purpose as any young child is to get accidental poisoning.  They are at an age of experimentation and they will sniff sharpies, glue and drink cough syrup or hand sanitizer if they know/think they can get a buzz.

After going what I went through this year, it's a warning well heeded.  They can and WILL find ways to satisfy their curiousity and alter their state.  My daughter was on vicodin for a few days after a severe concussion.  When her headaches didn't go away and I brought her to the pediatrician (and I have the best ped. in the country imho) she considered prescribing another few days of the vicodin until Andrea (my 13 y/o) made the comment, "I like them, they make me feel gooooooood" to which the ped. said, "no more vicodin for you!" and gave her a non narcotic.

Don't be so quick to dismiss the potential hazards of a product because of what might be considered setting up a fear factor on a product.  If you have children in your home, take the time to consider any warning and information and make an educated decision on it's usage.  I still have hand sanitizer in my house, however I use the tiny bottles that are often sold for travel, and I keep the large refill locked in my bathroom.  I buy non alcoholic mouth wash and do not leave out any of the cough/cold medications that the teens these days are using to get a buzz.  Don't underestimate the curiousity of a young child or the cunning and collaboration of an adolescent to find a means to experiment with altered states.

Education and informed decisions are all that are needed and a little personal responsibility (there's that term again....) for what is in your home and what your children have access to without barriers.

ok, end soapbox.

Scott

Scott, in fact, yes the teens will use it to the point of an 'epidemic'.  Case in point is the cough medications -Dextromethorphan (DXM) - is a powerful drug and the teens drink bottles of the damn stuff to get high.  It's become so much a problem here in the midwest you can't buy the stuff anywhere without proof of age and ID.  You must be 18 in most stores, 21 in others to purchase that or anything with pseudoephedrine.  I'm not spouting about something that happens to other people's kids either.  My own haven't done anything too incredibly stupid yet, however many of their friends have done and have sat and talked with me at length and I've gotten help for alot of them.  Another spent a solid 6 weeks methodically stealing narcotics that I have in the house, little bit by little bit.  They are great fun for teens, and they sell even better at the teens latest craze here - Rx parties - and they often have a rainbow tray - a tray with an assortment of prescription medications that are ingested.

I have first hand experience with this.  My own decided to try out the narcotics, as well as having had them stolen for usage and sale.  They are now kept locked in a lock box.

If you want to call it sensationalism, then I'm definitely guilty of sensationalizing.  And it's an offense that I will continue to do.

Do you need to ban the items?  No, but you do need to look at these warnings and experiences and make yourself an educated parent.  I raised my kids with an open communication policy, and consider myself fortunate that they have come to me with what they've done.  They know the dangers of drugs and it's an ongoing conversation in this house that started when they went to kindergarten.  It will never be too early, and you can't just talk about it once or twice and consider your job done.  Not sure about anyone else, but as a kid/teen myself, and witnessing my own teens, last time a teen was known for doing something or listening to something the first time they were told would be cause for me to stop and wonder "ok, what have you done now?...."

When my 13 y/o came to me and told me she'd smoked pot, more than once, I was grateful that my constant hounding and communication with them about coming to me first and telling me themselves over me finding out worked.  I don't condone it, I don't let it go as something that was ok, and I certainly am not going to assume that just because they tell me it won't happen again - I didn't flip out but I set out a means of discipline in accordance with the behaviour contracts I have in place with my kids.

Don't be so naive as to believe "MY kids wouldn't do that..."  They can and will.  It isn't a reflection on parenting all the time (although that is most certainly a factor in many of the kids that come around my house and call me mom as their 2nd mother) it is a reflection on the nature of teens to find mind altering substances either from peer pressure, the hormones and confusion of adolescence, or any of a million other factors.

Be educated, be informed, and be responsible.

back off the soapbox, we now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

Ugh and shrug it off all you want.  It's not something I will ever sit back and be quiet about.  I'm sorry you are so incensed by the thread. This isn't something that isn't occuring and it isn't something that happens to "other people's kids".

I'm not a mother of the year kind of mother for damn sure, but I sure as hell do pay attention and try to keep my kids talking.  It happened here, and my kids are fairly well behaved and educated.  I believe the therapist referred to us a Cleaver or Suzy Cream cheese family - whatever the hell that means...but I took it to mean I'm not the worst parent in the world.

It can and will happen, it isn't a reflection on the products or necessarily the parents/parenting.  It's simply something that has occured, is occuring, and will occur again.  Being informed doesn't mean you have to fear a product or medication.  It means you are taking the time to be educated.  If the word epidemic is what is causing you trouble, then use a different word, but don't bury your head in the sand because you think it's not occuring.

weren't we talking about hand sanitizer?

I'll be glad to cede the floor if someone can cite a true example where hand sanitizer is abused by teenagers......why you won't be able to is that it tastes awful. Too many good tasting alternatives. Might try it once, but due to the  Denatonium that is often added to give the substance an extremely bitter flavor. Substances such as Pyridine help to give the mixture an unpleasant odor, and emetic (vomiting) agents such as Syrup of Ipecac may also be included.

The teens I am talking about have used hand sanitizer.  I wasn't very clear on that and apologize.   I added the other items in as a point of reference and to give a broader context to the teen issue.  It's not an isolated product, and it doesn't mean you should never have or use the product, just like with cough syrup.  And not sure about you, but I know I sure as hell couldn't drink 2 or 3 bottles of the stuff without puking, just to catch a buzz - but then they use the dramamine to stop from puking and help get high as well.

problem solved - I'm throwing out any teenagers that may enter my home. This generation sounds as though they must be the stupidest yet.

When I was 13, beer, wine, liquor and pot were good enough for me. I suddenly sound like a prodigy compared to these stupid ones nowadays.......

Sadly that statement is truer than I wish I knew.

Is it possible to throw out your own teens??  My kids are good kids, it doesn't however mean they are smart....

Fortunately my own haven't participated in the alternative substances with the exception of one that loves the smell of Sharpies;  I wish that were true of the 5 others that I'm a 2nd Mom too though.

Tim, I wasn't aware that Scott and I were having a spat that would require kissing and making up Wink  We both clearly and adamantly stated our respective positions and opinions on the subject, no fights, no demeaning comments (I hope I didn't make any) and as far as I know no hard feelings, certainly not on my side of the discussion.

If I've offended anyone then I do apologize.  It was not my intention and never is;  This is just a topic I'm passionate about for obvious reasons.
