Quote: An 11-year-old Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail. Think hams as big as car tires. |

I'm sorry, but what in the holy hell was that father thinking of letting that kid get that close to hogzilla with a damn pistol (even if they had rifles trained on the pig from afar just in case)? To make the news? So what if he's been hunting since he was 5? That's just stupid! But I'm a mother (and grandmother). I like my kids more than that. Hugs BD

I dunno. Something about the photo bothers me. The perspective of the kid juxtaposed against the pig doesn't look quite right. Could it have been a bit--altered? Sorta like: Just askin'. Best, George

Is there a chance that the kid will "learn" to enjoy killing and be trigger happy ? Never been a hunter myself but it has always been a concern of mine. Would teaching kids from 5 years old how to shoot and kill even if its animals going to do something to the kids mentality ? Annette

| My son and daughter hunted and fished with me as soon as they were able and willing. They experienced the split second decisions made when choosing to take an animals life, the consequences, the emotions, and participated in the process of preparing animals they killed for consumption. It didn’t make them trigger happy youths that enjoy killing – it gave them an appreciation for how meat really comes to the table, a first hand lesson on the value of life, how quickly it ends, and how their decisions and actions have real and permanent consequences. Both developed deep-rooted respect for wildlife, preservation of dwindling wildlife habitat, an understanding of the complex relationship between predator and prey, and the frightening reality of life’s fragility. Hunting at an early age taught my children valuable lessons about life itself, the certainties of death, the meaning of ethics, and value of making good decisions under pressure. It also taught them first hand that they are a part of the natural order of things and in fact dependent on the natural order things. Hunting is a personal choice but for all intents and purposes it is a natural choice. The concept that hunting somehow twists the mind is what is twisted. Too much time buried in books learning how to dominate nature and not enough real life experiences is my guess to the concepts origin. Those preaching the immoralities and mental dangers of hunting are the ones who are confused. Tom

Thank you Tom. I guess its HOW things are taught that are important. Therefore if a child is taught how to use a firearm responsibly and be guided properly, that child will learn to respect the firearm and its proper use ? So going back to our previous debate a while ago, its not the gun that kills that the head that controls the hands that hold the gun that kills.

This has gotten out of hand. People are calling this kid a terrorist. It's the most ridicilous thing I've ever seen. he's been on FOX news and there's been thousands of animal rights people sending hate mail to him for killing that damn pig. It's unreal!!!! PETA (some animal rights group) have really been pounding him... I don't like the idea of his father letting him out with a pistol for that big piggy, but these people coming down on him need to be hung.... He's only 11 for goodness sakes. And how many 11 year old put 700 pounds of meat in the freezer? Hugs BD

| Isn't it disturbing that PETA doesn't do squat for preserving natural habitats where all forms of wildlife can flourish? Isn't it even more disturbing that PETA is heavily alinged with numerous wealthy developers and leveraged in development companies to boost it's war chest for fighting for animal rights? PETA's priorities are about as twisted as they get - give animals the same rights as humans while at the same time benefitting from destruction of habitat where their presious wildlife lives. PETA conveniently overlooks the fact that significant surcharges and taxes on every hunting/fishing license and all hunting/fishing/camping equipment sold is how public lands were/are purchased and maintained. In addition these dollars fund programs that have restored numerous species that were nearly wiped in our forests and protection of specialized habitats needed by species endangered by uncontrolled development. Their most hated activities (hunting/fishing) are the primary reasons PETA can include wild animals on their list of things to protect. Their vision of experiencing wildlife seems restricted to visiting what can be crammed into national parks and public lands set aside for the public's viewing pleasure. Unfortunately banning hunting/fishing would eliminate the money used to expand and maintin wildlife areas. Maybe PETA could convince their friends to develop 3/4 of current public lands and use the profits to protect what's left? Anyone believing PETA has a legitimate agenda and/or contributing to this hypoticritical organizations needs a reality check. There aren't many organizations with agendas more backwards, fundamentally unstable, and in total conflict with their stated purpose than PETA. Tom
