I saw Roger Waters in concert friday night at the Sound Advice Ampitheater in West Palm Beach, and man does he put on a great show! I know there are some Pink Floyd fans here (especially you, PinkFloyd!), if you get a chance to see him, don't miss it. He played 2 sets, and I'm not going to try to remember all the songs, but he opened with In the Flesh, then Mother, then Set your controls for the heart of the moon. He then played 3 or 4 of his solo songs, then went into Sheep and a couple from Final Cut. While Sheep was playing, a huge pink inflatable pig flew out into the audience! 2nd set was the entire Dark Side of the Moon album! Awesome! Then the encores were 4 songs from the Wall: Bring they boys back home, Vera, Another Brick in Wall Pt 2, and closed it out with Comfortably Numb. I had seen Pink Floyd concerts without roger waters, but this blew that away!

Set List Part 1 In The Flesh Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun Shine on You Crazy Diamond Have a Cigar Wish You Were Here Southhamptom Dock The Fletcher Memorial Home Perfect Sense Part 1 & 2 Leaving Beirut Sheep Part 2 Dark Side of the Moon Speak to Me Breath On The Run Time The Great Gig in the Sky Money Us and Them Any Colour You Like Brain Damage Eclipse Part 3 Encore The Happiest Days of our Lives Another Brick in the Wall Vera/ Bring the Boys back home Comfortably Numb Band Roger Waters Vocals, Guitar and Bass Andy Fairweather Low, Guitar, Vocals Jon Carin, Keys, Vocals Graham Broad, Drums Dave Kilminster, Guitar, Vocals Snowy White, Guitar Ian Ritchie, Sax Harry Waters, Hammond Organ PP Arnold, Vocals Katie Kissoon, Vocals Carol Kenyon, Vocals Venue; United Center, Chicago, Illinois Sold Out.....15 thousand people guesstimate Review: Read on at your own risk The Crowd: It was a full and equal mix of young and older fans, although I didn't see anyone younger than my 12 y.o grandson. His review BTW, being the talker he is, was one word....awesome. I on the other hand, am a bit more wordy Chicago has always been a very receptive place for Water's music and political themes. For the most part interested enough to actually listen to the lyrics, take in the sounds and appreciate the musicianship, and not scream their way through them or whistle and scream incessantly. Tonite was no exception. The Venue; I've seen Waters inside and outside and think the show is much better indoors, at least comparing the sound and light shows in Chicago venues. If you're in a venue with great acoustics, as the United Center "can be" then I would suggest sitting in the first 20 rows on the floor, or begin considering moving up and to the side. Indoors, the smoke hangs around much better (they didn't even need the smoke machines lol) which makes the light show much better. If you're back 40 rows on the floor, you're better off on level 2 on the side.....30-40 rows away from the stage. It's a long show and if you can stand for 2 1/2 hours, feel free to sit on the floor. Programs were 20.00 each but worth the price IMHO. Tee-Shirts: 35.00 and up Back to the smoke....If you have a problem with smoky air, you might want to consider traveling to an outdoor arena to see the show. The smoke machines run all night and add to that what is added by the crowd, the air was quite thick. The light show was ok and the flash pots were some of the biggest and loudest I've heard. continued;

The Music & the Players: In The Flesh Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun For anyone that hasn't been to a Water's concert, the show lets you know right off that what you will be hearing is very close to the original studio sounds. Water's makes his musicians play the songs the way they were written. There is more energy due to the crowd and the passion that draws from the band, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a dozen notes that aren't found on the originals. I appreciated this during the DSOM set but would have liked a bit more originality shown in a few of the other numbers. There are opportunities for some of the musicians to showcase their talents but you have to be content knowing they are all good enough to play this music, let alone make it sound like you've got the original LP spinning on your old Pioneer turn table, with the headphones on and the volume set on 10. Shine on You Crazy Diamond A great rendition and you could tell (at least I could) that Waters had a lot of emotions coming out on this one for Syd. The big screen showed some great old footage of Syd and the band and included some old super-8 footage of Syd walking into the sunset. Have a Cigar Not one of my favorites but......it sounded good. Started to build up the sound in the place. A little out of place (to me) in the set list because next we had... Wish You Were Here Which brought things back down a notch. This is one of my favs and I think the lyrics are what makes it that for me. I don't think half the people in the place really understand the lyrics but.......they all know how to sing 'em. LOL. Maybe that's why Waters puts Cigar in between this and Diamond, to distance it a bit from being all about Syd. It's not, although it has become that I guess. BTW, Waters plays some nice acoustic guitar. Southhamptom Dock The Fletcher Memorial Home Perfect Sense Part 1 & 2 Once again, I imagine only half the people in the place had heard these before but by the end of Perfect Sense, they were all up singin. Waters always has great films/slide shows that tell the stories as they unfold which helps people understand what the song is about. His political points of view and how mankind treats each other. Leaving Beirut Ok, here was the real test for how his political views would be accepted.. This is a new song and it makes the Dixie Chicks look like a bunch of Acolytes serving communion at the Crystal Cathedral on Sunday and passing out Vote for Bush bumper stickers the rest of the week. I wasn't sure if the people cheering when he showed US soldiers and bombings, were cheering for the soldiers or for what he was saying, but I think it became apparent when one of the biggest cheers of the night went up following this line: "Oh George! Oh George! That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small." Sheep I hadn't heard this one in a long time and it was great to hear. It was also one rockin way to end the first set. All the guitarists were at their best and rockin the house. continued;

Part 2 Dark Side of the Moon Speak to Me Breath This is one of the classics and was played with all the respect it deserved from the musicians. On The Run Time One of a couple of times that choked me up a bit.....an old man, sitting next to his grandson, wondering where the years have gone. The thought occurred to me about how old these songs are and the messages they present about the need for empathy for fellow human beings.....Thinking that people like Waters (Floyd in general) have been asking/begging/demanding changes and we are, in many ways worse off than we were in 1973 in these areas. I took heart in thinking that we would have been even worse off had people like Water's not been brave enough to speak up and make people accountable. Where would we be right now in history, without the voices of reason. The Great Gig in the Sky PP Arnold got a standing ovation for her rendition of this classic song and did the original artist (Clare Torrey) proud, I'm sure. Wow. Money Us and Them This was the first song that allowed a *bit* of the talent of both Kilminster and Low to come out with a little originality. Both can whale on a guitar. They may not be David Gilmour but then, who is They can play the notes but there were a few times where you could feel the electricity they were drawing from the crowd. Any Colour You Like Brain Damage Eclipse The set (album) seemed to end too soon. Certainly leaving everyone begging for more. I'm not sure how many albums could be played like this at a concert and have it build to something like this one did. it's not like Water's had to arrange the song list to build to a high point. DSOM does it on it's own. Part 3 Encore The Happiest Days of our Lives Another Brick in the Wall Vera/ Bring the Boys back home Comfortably Numb The encore put an exclamation point on the evening. Of course ending with probably PFs most famous song. It was more than a bit heartening to see 15000 people singing (very loudly) "We don't need no education...we don't need no thought control" OTOH, I turned to my grandson and said..."you...need education.....but this is part of it" A couple final notes on the band; Graham Broad, Drums Overall did a good job. I thought he was about a half beat too slow in a couple spots. Sometimes its not good to have these things memorized. Its one thing to pick up the beat a little on a live show, as the energy rises, and it's either appreciated or goes unnoticed. Slowing down the tempo even a little is very apparent (at least to me). Dave Kilminster, Guitar, Vocals Had pretty decent vocals on the couple that he sang. Ian Ritchie, Sax To me, there's nothing better than a great sax player. Especially indoors when the sound bounces off the walls. I wish more bands used them. This guy is really good. Floyd's mix of psychedelic rock & bluesy gospel makes them quite unique indeed. Roger Waters Roger's voice hasn't much left. When he sang in a normal tone and range, he was sometimes difficult to hear. When he raised his voice, it seemed he was straining a bit. It's already been a long tour though and with 2 1/2 hours of singing in a smoke filled room....it's still quite impressive. Bobw

| Wow, RUSH, another fav of mine. I'd go just to hear Neil Peart bang the skins!!! Trees always reminds me of this place One thing I forgot to mention about Waters. Almost all concerts now do not allow any cameras. Waters allows "small disposable" cameras so there was plenty of flashes going off. They just don't want people walking in with "professional" equipment with zoom lenses etc. and I saw plenty of people having to "check" their equipment at the door. I'm sure though that if someone has a small digital with a zoom that would fit into a pocket.......it would get it. Bobw

I was lucky to watch Pink Floyd perform "Divison Bell" in Chicago years ago. Just bought the DVD called "Pulse" which is the exact same concert footage performed in the U.K. If you want to see a high quality Pink Floyd DVD, it is definately worth buying. Go to discountdvd.com to get a copy. Type "supersale" in the promotional area and receive 20% off.
