It was behind door 518 at a Galveston motel room where the unimaginable happened: A father put his two-month-old daughter in the microwave and turned it on.
Manager says man calmly called for help after microwaving baby
Last Thursday, Joshua Mauldin, 19, was alone in the motel with his baby when he called for help.
“The father called down here, asked us to call 911, claimed that the child had a bad sunburn and was bleeding,” hotel manager James Marx said.
Marx said he didn’t seem distraught at all.
Mauldin later told police it wasn’t a sunburn, but that he had accidentally spilled boiling water on the child.

“The first time, he tripped,” Galveston Police Sgt. Annie Almendarev said Wednesday. “Then he said, no, he was drinking it and spilled it. There were just too many inconsistencies. He just couldn’t keep his stories straight.”
A tip then led investigators to the hotel room’s microwave, where they discovered the baby had been placed inside.
Mauldin then confessed, saying stress had driven him to burn his child.
“There was no expression. There was no expression at all. No remorse,” Almendarev said.

The baby girl was rushed to Shriners Hospital, where she’s undergone two skin graft surgeries and is in critical but stable condition.
She suffered severe burns to the left side of her face and left hand.
“I’ve been doing this for a lot of years and actually it brought tears to my eyes,” Galveston Police Sgt. Annie Almendarev said. “The baby is burned on the left side here and it’s just really bad. Her hand is so swollen – if you’ve ever touched something hot you know you get that big boil on your hand – it looks like she’s holding a ball in her little bitty hand. It was just heartbreaking.”
Investigators believe the child was in the microwave for ten to 20 seconds.

Behind this door, the unthinkable happened: Joshua Mauldin put his daughter in the microwave and turned it on.
“I’m sitting there looking at the pictures and I’m sitting there looking at him, and there’s nothing I could really do about it but just keep my composure,” Almendarez said.
Mauldin had checked into the hotel last week along with his baby, his wife and his mother.
Police said he came to Galveston from Arkansas in search of a job as a minister.
“He’s the worst scum of the earth. I can’t … It makes you want to have cameras in the rooms,” Marx said.
At the time of the incident, Mauldin’s wife and mother were reportedly picking up dinner at a nearby restaurant.
According to police reports, he told investigators God ordered him to go to Galveston.
Mauldin was being held in the Galveston County Jail facing felony charges of injury to a child. His bond was set at $250,000.
Prosecutors said, if convicted, he could face anywhere from five to 99 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Ok, he deserves to be cut into little pieces and fed to pigs, but only after breaking every bone in his body first.
Something like this...he doesn't deserve to live!!!!! The death penalty is too good for people like him. We need to come up with a legal sort of punishment that involves brutal torture for the rest of his life. I think it would be perfect for cases like him and the lady that cut off her son's genitals!!

This is happening more and more. and then they plead insanity and get "help". the hell with that crap.... they need to suffer long and hard! A preacher -- give me a break.... Let him preach to the inmates at Huntsville for the next 99 years (if they let him live that long).
Nothing WE can do to him is BAD enough for what he did to that baby.... When are our lawmakers gonna wake up and put the laws back in favor of the victims?

Seriously, I'm not in favor of torturing the guy, just kill him. The same as you'd do with a rabid dog or a copperhead.

This is beyond sick--simply unfathonable. Even though the link below is about animal cruelty and not a human incident, it illustrates a terrible sickness in our society. The young man in question is a famous coach's son, and he got off
easy IMO. What does it say about the sentancing when he was given more probation time for stealing the bird than killing it?

It's a shame they can't execute this guy. He's going to get off with a slap on the wrist, sure as hell. If they throw him in the pen with the general population maybe they can do something appropriate with him.

Obviously his mother and school teachers didnt do anything to intervene, such as taking him to see a psychiatrist for evaluation.
The hospital where his baby was born was not alerted to the fact that her father was likely to have a history of mental illess.
Most lilkely he will get off with minimal sentence pleading schizophrenia or something.

This guy was arrested with 3rd degree battery and only last month violation of a protective order, both were against his wife, the mother of the baby.
Both women knew what sort of a person he is and what he is capable of ( violence ) yet they left him alone with the baby.

I would agree with you totally Tony if reversing sterilization is not such a difficult operation, very costly and not very successful.
The media didnt say how old the mother is, but with him being 19, I guess she would be in her teens as well. A much higher percentage of babies born to teenager parents get into problems.
Time to stop teenage pregnancy.

I don't understand why you keep saying... "another one fallen through the cracks." Just what crack has this guy fallen through? And why would his mother take him to a shrink? And what does his teachers have to do with taking him to a shrink?
The hospital being warned he is likely to have a history of mental illness ? Do you realize how many men... and women... are likely to have a history of violence? Or mental illiness? What does that have to do with anything? A person is supposed to be locked up because they are likely to be violent? That's not the way it works in this country. I don't know about Australia, as I don't live there.
Also, being mentally ill is a braod term. Ever been depressed? That is considered a mental illness here.
In this country, you have to actually be violent, and cause someone, or something real harm in order for anyone to pay attention to you. The police can't lock you up because you might be violent. It's not really a situation you can judge. If he promised he was not going to be violent again, his wife may have believed him. If she was there actually watching him do this horrible thing to his child, then she could be charged, but not on what ifs, and maybes.
I'm not sticking up for this guy, I just don't understand your train of thought here, Annette. You can't lock people up on the premise of what they may do, at least not here.
Personally, I think the guy should suffer the same fate, but you know what? I seriously doubt he learns anything from it. He could get his ass kicked in prison every day for (what will no doubt turn out to be) the rest of his short life, and he still wouldn't get it. He's a sociopath. I hope his child heals, and doesn't grow up to be like him. Stop the cycle.

I agree with what you say Chris. Here in Australia the police cant lock up anyone prior to them committing some sort of chargeable crime either.
I am simply trying to think of how such things can be prevented. Sadly things like this has happened before and will happen again if nothing is done to try to prevent it.
If he had been seen by a psychiatrist he might have been diagnosed with whatever it is and received treatment maybe it would not have happened. If the psychiatrist deems him to be at risk to himself or others he could be committed to a mental institute.
If the hospital was aware, they could assign a community nurse to do home visits to follow up on the baby. The mother and grandmother could be educated not to leave the baby alone with him.
Whatever....
When I read or hear about something like this, my first thought is always : What can I do to stop this?
Svenn told me once to stop being naive and think that I can save the world. I know I cant but maybe, just maybe I can make a tiny bit of a difference.

I'm just glad that child abuse is recognized now, and is a punishable crime, if it goes too far. As Charlie said, there weren't many (if any) microwaves, or other modern technology to use to torture children a long time ago, but children still got abused, beaten to within an inch of their lives (that still happens every day), broken bones, kids ended up in the hospital, due to the parents (it's not just men) snapping, or themselves being brought up like that, and not knowing any other way.
My dad was abusive, and my grandparents (all 4 of them) knew it. This was in the 60's and early 70's. A couple years ago, someone asked me why my grandparents didn't report him. Back then, it just wasn't done. You'd be considered getting into something that was none of your business. Things are much different now.
Before there were child protection agencies, I wonder how many children were killed, or tortured and died at the hands of their parents... and got away with it. Especially mothers. No one would ever believe a mother would harm a child... no way. How many parents were mentally not all there... and how many families covered it up?

Just some info to add to Chris's post, the first child ever that needed intervention that came to mind of authorities, there exisited no child protection agencies so it had to be dealt with by the SPCA.

Gosh golly jeepers! I must have really screwed up the statistics then. My son was born just after I turned 18. The hell of it is, I was a good mom. I had it rough just like other single teenage moms - the father was an ass, didn't help out with parenting, was obstinate and refused to be an active and positive parent, a child with severe ADHD that showed up before he was 2 (not diagnosed until 1st grade), etc..... My poor poor kids! One is a sheet metal apprentice - a highly coveted position; the other will graduate from college next may with a BS in economics with a math emphasis. So so sorry - apologies for screwing up the statistics regarding children of teenage parents.
A large proportion of child abuse happens with adult parents. Parents too frustrated by their lives; parents who want to be kids again, not have the responsibility of children; parents who shouldn't be parents.
Don't blame teenage pregnancy for this!
Also, "mental illness" has little to do with parenting. Mental illness includes schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, and also the highly common depression. Not to mention: someone who does horrible things, like microwaving their baby, isn't necessarily mentally ill - he could be evil / bad / bad seed / etc...

I remember stuff like this happening when I was a kid. Baseball bats. bleach, acid, bug spray, and the trusty burlap bag in the river. It's a sick world, always has been but the difference is that you can see and hear it any time you hit the remote.

Most definetely not all teenage parents are bad, and not all adult parents are good. There are always exception, like yourself. You are indeed a very good and courageous mother to be able to bring up your children against such adversity.
Still teenage pregnancies and parenting do have a higher rate of problems, that is just fact.
Teenager is a time where the brain and the body are still developing and many dont have the maturity required for responsible parenting. Again I agree that there are exceptions.
As a society we should give support to those who do become parents in their teens but I dont think we should encourage it.
You also made a very interesting point about the father in this case being evil vs mental. How do you suggest we distinguish what is evil and what is mental? I guess once a person is determined to be evil, there wont be any hope of rehabilitation? Not trying to start an argument here, just interested in your point of view.
