Can you believe this one....

The Iraqians are sending people over here to LOBBY our congress! Oh no don't pull out -- we're taking the summer off, but Ya'll just keep on doing whatever it is ya'll are doing. We'll be back sometime in the fall to see how you're doing!

I can't believe the nerve of those people. I think it's about time they put up or STFU. If that don't show Congress something NOTHING is ever gonna wake them up. 5 years is long enough for them to get their damn act together.

My opinion - off soapbox.

Well cause we've had enough of our Southern boys over there for 5 years now -- of course they're saying "ya'll".  Cheesy

But seriously, when we fought our war of independence back in the 1700s, we didn't have any "Peace Keeping" troops over here taking care of us until we "elected" our government and wrote our constitution and got our act together - we were on our "own". When we had our Civil War, we didn't have anyone over here helping us get our act together - no we were on our "own".

Now, instead of taking care of their own business, Iraq is over here LOBBYING our Congress for MORE of OUR tax money to take care of THEM. BS! 5 friggin' years is ENOUGH! Time they get their act together and do something on their own. Train their OWN troops and do whatever they NEED to do, but get US out of the picture. We NEED OUR money at HOME!

Thats a good point....and there was some very bad blood after the civil war.  After the war there were many "terrorist" attacks due to the bad blood, such as trying to set fire to passenger ships in the Mississippi, but we didn't go calling on any outside parties to help keep us safe.

We are never in the world going to get that country settled down. The Iranians want to add it to Iran, the Kurds want to secede and start their own country, and the Sunni just want to get back on top. The government is incredibly inept and corrupt and the surrounding countries all have followers that they support inside of Iraq.
We could stay another ten years and it wouldn't get any better. The Iranians funnel guns, money and bombs to the Shiite terrorists, the Saudis and Syrians funnel money, guns and bombs to the Sunni terrorists, and the Turks keep worrying that the Kurds will secede and get the Turkish Kurds to do the same.

The only way that country will ever settle down is if they get another Saddam. The population understands someone that tells them, "Do what I tell you or I'll kill you and most of your family." US-style political correctness is a HUGE waste of time.

WWII was the last battle that you could geniunly call a "WAR".  We got in there and fought (no boundaries) and made the rules afterwards.  Now we have a line drawn here, there and everywhere that our guys aren't allowed to cross because a civilian might get hit.

I'm not for harming civilians, but if we had gone in and fought (to win) from day one, this would probably have been a lot further to being along than it is now.

Jack I think you just hit the nail on the head. But OUR government doesn't understand that THAT is how things are DONE in the MID-EAST. You can say what you want about Saddam, but he had CONTROL over HIS country and it was a lot more peaceful.

If only he didn't take such drastic steps!  I think the "peace" was for those outside of Saddums' borderlines.  Criminals should be harshly punished, but not the poor innocents.

One of the reasons we didn't have more homeland terrorist attacks during our Civil War was because Robert E. Lee surrendered when he did. There were increasing numbers of guerrilla tactics being used, especially in the west, and he felt it was a dishonorable way to fight. Since he was an honorable man, he thought it best to admit defeat rather than take the war to this level.

War is war, even if you are fighting with one arm tied behind your back by congress and it's disrespectful to those who died fighting to say otherwise.

The big difference between then and now is we've grown impatient.  If there isn't a quick fix, then let's just not get involved.  Do I need to remind anyone that we are STILL protecting South Korea 57 years later?  And casualties - 1884 US Army soldiers died in just the first month of the Korean War.  More than 36,000 Americans died in just 3 years of the actual fighting and more than 750 Americans have died since the Armistice was signed in 1953.  North and South Korea are still at war today and we are worried about nuclear weapons in North Korea.  Maybe we should finish old business before we get too disgusted at the progress of the current war.

Please do not misunderstand what I say.....the guys fighting for us deserve all of the respect that we have in our bodies.  The battles since WWII were fought by brave and dedicated men.......it's those that direct them that I find fault with.  Our guys need not still be dying over there.  If we did it right in the beginning, they'd probably be home now and not so many would have been killed.

The rest of our Vetrans, in my opinion, were short-changed too.

Donna you are right - our soliders should be held high  - it's our POLITICIANS who should be held to answer.

We have soldiers in Europe 60 years after WW11, We have soldiers in Japan 60 years later, we have soldiers in Korea 50 years later -- we're scattered all over the world. Yet when you really look at these countries what do you see. Commerce, industry, education, etc that far surpasses what WE have in this country. We're BUYING from them and we're supplying the funds for them to sell to US. For some reason this does not make very good sense to me.

We destroyed their countries in times of war, we rebuilt their countries in times of peace and now we're still paying them. And the American people are doing without all the things that they're living with. Our children can't read and write while they have education systems that we SHOULD have in this country. Our plants are going overseas, while they're selling BACK to us.

And yet we insist that WE know what's BEST for everyone.

Yeah, our gov just doesn't understand at all. Surely surely there is someone in Washington that can figure this out. Any of the American expats over here could have told them what was going to happen. You should have heard the jokes in the American community over here back when Bush was talking about the Iraqis throwing roses and the like.
The Iraqis aren't that big a deal in a military sense but even the other Arabs around here are afraid of them because they just won't quit unless you get medieval on them.
The gov (ours) just doesn't seem to understand that religion is a big enough deal to kill for over here. The Shia and the Sunnis really hate each other.

Well, that would have probably worked as well. If we'd gone after Baghdad and the other military and population centers like we did Tokyo and Dresden and the ruled the place like we did after WWII, the survivors would have probably accepted us much better. As it is, we're sort of in charge but keep claiming we're not and the situation is just a mess. On the other hand, I have to admit that world opinion is really against leveling entire cities these days.

My hubby was an expat who spent a lot of time in the mid-east and he did say all that, but no one listened. He was there during the Iran/Iraq War and was in the middle of the Kuait thingy (some of his crew were "guests" in Iraq until the very last -- you don't even want what I think of the American Embassy during that time and how much money the company had to pay to keep "our" American "guests" there).

But our politicians going over there on "fact finding" missions just ain't gettin' the "facts" - they're being told what they're suppose to hear.

And these "hatreds" having been going on for thousands of years and they're not going to cease just because we're there. That's the part we, as Americans, just don't understand. And probably never will.

Glad to meet another expat! Grin I was in Al Khobar for GW I, the last scud that killed all those guys was a measured 280 meters from my back door. That was a really strange war. Like your husband, I learned to really dislike the US Embassy during that war. They passed such utter bullshit to us, things that not even the worst fool would believe. Oh well, it's been 15 years and I still don't trust them.

You're right about the hatreds going back for centuries. The Arabs don't like or trust the Persians and neither of them cares for the Kurds, etc. etc. I can't believe the US govv didn't know all this crap before they invaded Iraq. HHell, I'm just a computer geek and I knew all that stuff. My own belief is that Bush and company were told how this was going to turn out but didn't listen because it wasn't what they wanted to hear.
