Having served in the military for over 12 years through peace and war, I understand pain and sadness at the loss of a comrade in arms and the need to acknowledge his or her passing, but I don't think Sgt Wilt sees the bigger picture.

Don't get me wrong.  I am saddened by the loss of even one of our brave military men and women, but to lower the flag every time a soldier died in a war would be to dwell on the death and the loss.  Being in a perpetual state of mourning would strike at the heart of morale both in the field and back home as well.  In a way, it would be a tribute to the effectiveness of the enemy.  Demoralizing our troops and emboldening the enemy.

There is a national day of remembrance for our fallen soldiers.  I wish more people recognized it for what it truly is.  Unfortunately, most Americans have made it just another day off work to party and drink and barbecue.

yeah Mike, I have notice that, instead of going to the cementery to put flowers and say a prayer, people celebrate with a BBQ...
Where  i'm from we have our memorial day too, actually 2 days, one is for the children that are gone and the next day for the adults, and the people actually go and have a meal at the cementery with the loved one, put flowers and honor their gone relatives.

I  honor my relatives putting an offering for them on those days here at home and my daughter knows what it is for, I want her to cherish this tradition and embrace it too.
