I spoke with a friend of mine yesterday, who seems to have a constant run-in with the beast (chronic), he said that about a month ago he started taking niacin everyday and his cycle stopped almost immediately. Has anyone ever heard of this or tried this? He is one of the CH's that doesn't seem to respond to trex, preventatives etc. He was also able to have alcohol with no ill effects whatsoever. I'm glad he is PF for now, and he says he doesn't think it is just a coincidence. I'll check with him in a week or so just to see how it is going. Jimmers

Here is some info on niacin http://www.doctoryourself.com/niacin.html Quote:Another niacin feature is its ability to greatly reduce anxiety and depression. Yet another feature of niacin is that it dilates blood vessels and creates a sensation of warmth, called a "niacin flush." |
| Reducing anxiety and depression is good. Dilating blood vessels seems to be contrary to what we think we know about clusters. May be why some people say it triggers for them. I hope it does work for him. Even if it doesn't, it would be interesting to see if trex started working for him while he's taking niacin.

I know that Niacin comes in a normal form and a no-flush form. The normal form will give you something of a 'hot flash' (I do not know what to call it). But I have heard that the 'no flush' variety is ineffective for many things one would take niacin for... no idea if that is true.

I took prescription strength niacin for awhile a few years ago. I took it at night, because of "the flush". It would come over the top of my head, and down my arms and shoulders. The idea is to be asleep before you feel it. Not good if you have insomnia in any form. I was taking it for my cholesterol at the time. After several months of it, one night I took it, and the flush came on, and I literally felt like I was on fire, in addition to pins and needles being stuck in my head, all the way down. I had to stop it, that feeling was waking me up. Didn't do anything for my CH, but if you give it a shot, you have nothing to lose. Go for it! It definitely gets the blood flowing!

| That is it exactly Chris. I also took it for cholesterol. It is as you described. One thing is for certain... if you are not asleep before the flash hits, you will not be going to sleep for another very uncomfortable hour. And if you are asleep, you have a 50% chance of waking up with what feels like a severe sunburn.

Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives.

Several years ago my neuro put me on the following regimen. A daily multi vit with iron, calcium with Vit D, magnesium, Glucosamine with condroitin..(probably butchered the spelling there) and Vitamin B-2. In the roughly 4 years since starting that regimen my cycles have seemed shorter and the headaches less severe. This last cycle lasted forever but it was the first time I tried the imitrex injectable so the jury is still out on cause and effect. The B-2 can be found in vitamin stores, I take the 250 mg a day dose. Just a warning, a few hours after taking B-2 your pee will look like Tang, (for those old enough to remember Tang!)...like orange juice to you younger ones! And just to clarify, the CH specific meds were the Magnesium, the Calcium and Vit D to counter what the magnesium can do to me, and the vitamin B-2. Guiseppi

I took several years ago something called yeast from beer but in liquid ( about a teaspoon a day), the Doc prescribed as a suplement, it tasted like warm beer and I did get the warm feeling on my head but my CH was still the same...I guess did not work for me...

| A little birdie forwarded me your post, thought I might want to respond to it. I do. A shill is a person that pretends to be something they are not, and does so for ulterior reasons - usually financial. That really doesn't describe me or my website. I do have affiliate links there - and if someone does click on those links, and does make a purchase, I get a small percentage of that purchase. In most months, it pays for my web hosting. I could put a paypal tip jar to help pay the bandwidth, but decided not too, and have declined offers to contribute. I prefer to get a small affiliate fee from people who buy supplements (and would probably buy them elsewhere anyway - most of the purchases are for kudzu, which undoubtedly helps many people, and which costs much less through the vitacost link than in a health food store). If people don't like vitacost and buy their kudzu somewhere else, that's fine by me. I also get about 25 cents a week from the Google Ads that are there (and here on CH.com). But money was never the driving force for the website, and doesn't affect what I write about something. If the evidence points towards concluding something is innefective, I say so (acupuncture, feverfew, chiropractic, etc). If the evidence is a few anecdotal reports, I say so. If something is untested, but might make clusters better or worse due to something theoretical we know about it, I say that it is theoretical. Many of the things I wrote about involve vitamins, minerals, herbs. That's my personal perspective - my doc prescribed me Amerge (a triptan) which was great for aborting the headache, but knocked me out for a day - it left me with muscle aches and the feeling that someone was sitting on my chest, and I thought I was going to need hospitalization. Since then, I have been committed to OTC remedies, because they tend to be less costly and less toxic (a generalization, I know, but one I believe to be generally true). So I wrote a lot more about about kudzu and magnesium and B-vitamins and melatonin and taurine because these are relatively safe, inexpensive, and there is reason to believe they help some people with clusters. You said "Please point me toward something that www.med-owl.com describes as a treatment that vitacost does not sell." Here's a partial list (if I wanted to spend another five minutes browsing my site, I could double or triple the length): anticoagulants cluster-busters meditation choline benzodiazapines water-water-water cnidium oxygen 5-HTP yoga coffee Sangre de Grado the detox diet corticosteroids red bull hoodia Dr. Wright's circulatory technique Inositol In the case of inositol (a secondary messenger in the serotonin feeback system), there is a link to a company that supplies it, but it isn't vitacost - it is the company I buy from, which sells 5 pound bags for the same price that most vitamin stores would charge for a few ounces. And I don't have any financial arrangement with that company, I simply thought people who are interested in inostol might want to know about that. There are also a large number of pages that deal with summarizing the research and have nothing to do with any possible financial gain. Other pages were written to translate scientific jargon into English, like the page on the diagnostic criteria. The page about Dr. Schabel was written partly out of fun, but has a pointer to the OUCH list of recommended doctors. If my pages are 'too commerical' for your taste, that's just the way it is, I can live without your approval. But your characterization of the site as being a shill that exists only to promote vitacom is is innacurate and amounts to defamation, which deserves a response. I was the first to propose kudzu as a treatment, and I spent (donated!) hundreds of hours of my time talking to people about their experience with it. I was the first person to provide a reason why Red Bull might be more than cold caffeine (and several regulars here have since reported improvement from taking taurine capsules, which cost far less than those nasty carbonated beverages). I have gotten dozens of emails from people that have reported good results from magnesium or B-vitamins after they read about them either here or on my website and then tried them. I assume that my actions speak for themselves, but it is clear that sometimes they do not. Jonathan (formerly known as Floridian)
