Could use some input

I'm not accustom to negotiating with employers, so all input is welcome.

I've found myself in a position where the new Ad Manager is on some sort of power trip.  I've been assigned additional accounts to work, which would be a good thingexcept for the fact taht my 4th period goal has been inflated to an unrealistic level, and no compensation for the additional work load.  Brita, who left in September, I was assigned the remainder of her left over accounts, none of which have produced any retail revenue in years.  My goal has been increased by over 25% in relation to this period last year.  Policy has changed so that we are no longer able to offer discounted rates to keep the revenue flowing.  I've been cut off at the knees.  In addition to this I'm covering an "open" territory that has shown to have been mis-managed and under the new policys, they are pulling all their business, however these inflated goals are expecting a 25% increase in the revenue on these accounts as well.  It's utterly impossible!!!

Here's the kicker...his bonuses are directly tied to if the sales staff meets their goals.  Artificially inflating our goals is doing nothing but cutting his own throat, unless he's negotiated a package that doesn't place his income on the line dependant on our success.  The goals that have been set this period appear to me to reflect just that.

I was so ready to walk out the door today.  Seems to be a twice weekly knee jerk reaction the past couple months, but I have kids to feed and a roof to keep.  So I just tarry on in hopes a glimmer of good news will filter through.  And the clouds still hang low and threatening.

I hate to be micro-managed and this is precisely what Jim does.  I'm not sure how long I can take it under this "management" system. It's a cutting off of our livelyhoods.  Jim never talked down to us when he was a sales Rep.  But he not only talkes down now, but talks over us and refuses to listen, and even when he tries he forgets what we say.

I thought this was what I wanted.  Now....I'm not so sure.

Office politics are impossible to overcome.....unless you are at the top.

Time to take a "sick day" and go to an employment agency, sweetie.

You don't need this...and I doubt if it is going to get any better..

I've learned, after many years of trying to support three little children by myself, that when you look for new employment, always go for the job that you think is a little "above you".  It usually isn't.

Good luck, my dear.  If you want to talk, IM me or write me at my e-mail address.  Send me your phone number and I'll call you.  It's a hard job raising children on one income..  This is sooooo familiar!!

It's obviously time to find new employment. But remember this - you are in more of a position of control if you are gainfully employed while you are looking. Mentally kiss this one goodbye, but don't pull the plug yet. Start looking tomorrow, but try to stay at your current job until you've accepted a new one. And try not to look desperate, even though you might be. You will be able to negotiate a higher salary that way.

I hate it when a job you thought was going to be great turns out to be a drag, but that's life sometimes. You're now seeing how much loyalty "the company" has to you. It's not a two-way street.

Hold on a little longer while you put all your effort into a better place.

I have yet to miss a revenue goal since October of last year.  In fact I've reaches as high as 125% of goal.  But windfall revenue is not suposed to be counted but for the period in which it is earned.  This hasn't been the case....

I'd need to go back and get documentation of all my sales.  Inquirey into this will raise a red flag.

Jonny there is no one higher to go to than the publisher and she's just looking for her own retirement in t5he next year.  She cares nothing for us peons who generate her revenue.   Shes tenured within the company.

She is focused on her retirement at this time and NOT the future of this paper.  It 's too obvious.

Jim is now her key out the door, regardless of the future of the company.  Or at least the two branches she holds.  Jim is soaking in all the Company Hype, new in his managerial status and wanting to "please".  I think he'll soon find his way of managing needs to be altered. This is not Shopko. (his former managers job). This is media, and the apoach needs to be altered to fit the sales format that one is dealing with.

Does your company do "employee reviews"  or have you received an annual raise or company merit , or anything that complements your work?  This is a valuable tool in looking for new employment.

There's no doubt that holding your job while looking for another is vital.  Do all that you can to hang in there until you find something better.  If I were you, I wouldn't waist any time.

Grin GrinRedd, I don;t know you at all except for the side of your ID (thats Id and not Identification)that you let out here,  you seem to exude confidence and ability, so while you still have a job, start thinking about the long term future.  You know Dearest, if you can do this for a big company, you can do it for yourself!
Start your own business by begining while you still have an income, you can alter the basic foundation of the large company to suit your needs, use the format you know and go for the throat, steal customers if you have to, you know there are Grants and low interest loans out there for Minority and Women owned businesses.
They all had to start at the begining and just pick the nitch you like the best and start trying to fill it, Start a magazine or a coupon company, crafts and pets and health related stuff is always in demand.
Don't wait to be micro managed out the door because Jim is stealing your credit, like most managers do from their best employees!  JMHO  You sound like a real go getter. so go get her!!!     Pappy

Hey sis Wink

If Jim's paycheck is tied to yours, then he will notice this, as soon as he is paid for his commission/ bonus. As the boss, he may not be paid in the same time as yours. If he seems to not care, then his pay package may not be tied to the sales dept, which would be very unusual.

Look for another job, and definitely go for something that appears to be "above you", as Donna said. You are right to do this as you are still employed.

If you want to try to talk to Jim, then get your facts together, the extra non-producing accounts dumped on you, the unrealistically high goals, and let him know you feel you need some guidance as to how you can meet your goals with these accounts, especially as you were regularly going over your goals. See what he says. Be sure to ask for a meeting, so you don't get interrupted. You should have your answer afterwards.

I'll talk to you when I get back.  Good Luck.

Just say you want to be able to show new clients that you put every effort into making their needs your priority - true anyway so play on it! Your record is good so it WOULd give a newer client confidence to see that and that way there aren't any red flags as you're being "open" about it!

Hi Redd----This is the way Gannett owned Newspapers operate----the cut and gut method. Either they release people or people quit and then they expect whoever is still standing with a pulse to handle a much heavier load, without any additional compensation. I think that you are 1,000% better than any crap they throw at you. Look at all the other Newspaper companies----they've been sold !!!! Investors demanded better results and the ships started sinking. But that will never be a threat to Gannett because they own "USA Today." And they know it----they sweet talk the analysts in New York, and treat their own work force like they just came to America yesterday............Tell your boss you were born at night------but not last night.
