Time to give up and find something else?

As some of you know, I'm struggling in a great deal with my journalistic career.

Well, I just got another call with bad news: I didn't get the job I really, really wanted as a summer journalist at 3 TV magazines. Sad

The editor said that I had made a great impression and that I "obviously have the talent", but they went for people who have more experience. He also said that he will keep my resume for the future reference. I said to him that when there'll be new places opening, he should keep me in mind because I'm interesting in working there.

So, at least for now, another dead end.

And, once again, I wonder, what the hell I should do about this! My so called career, that is. I'm not yet graduated (dissertation and few essays left to do) with my MA, but naturally, rejection after another I begin to be more and more certain that someone upstairs is trying to tell me to give up with journalism and do something else instead. Besides writing a novel I have no idea what that "something" is.

Of course it's too soon to make any rational decitions. I'll give it a day or two... Earlier today I was thinking about sending my resume to Finnish edition of Cosmopolitan for laughs and sell one story idea I have, but right now I'm going to give it a second thought.

I do know that they say that one should never ever give up on one's dreams, but I'm beginning to wonder if this truly is that one big dream of mine. The worst thing about this is that it makes me question EVERYTHING I want in my life! I've always wanted the simple things; a career doing what I love, happy marriage, perhaps children (if I'm blessed enough), travelling to interesting places... nothing fancy.

Now all I know for certain is that I have a macaronicasserole in the oven, I need to meet my best supporter at 5pm and one of my beloved guinea pigs is sick. Cry And, yeah, if I was once worried that I don't cry anymore, that worry is long gone.

Ok, venting is done. PF days for us all.

Sandi,

You're YOUNG -- keep dreaming. You're gonna get rejections in journalism. Keep writing and sending stuff in - when you get that letter that says - WE LIKE IT - sign here - it'll all be worth the rejections.

For years I worked on the "great American novel". My writers group tore it apart one night. I went home and got drunk, threw it in the bottom of the closet cause they were right - it was awful (and I'd worked so hard). Think I moved out of that house with it still in the bottom of that closet. BUT, I figured out after that, I could write NON-fiction pretty well and have had a lot of that published. Did a cookbook that's still going and am working on another book now (Horsesense Manual). And it's only taken me about 45 years to figure this out.

So sometimes the dreams change over the years but you just have to roll with the punches.

Now go meet that guy and doctor that pig and quit crying.

Hugs BD

Rejection is all part of the career process.  You WILL land a job in the field...

Remember, there are politics within any field.  You'll work your butt off, you'll meet or exceed all of your goals.  Then when the time comes that big promotion will go to the brown-noser who is always late to the office, whining of this that or the other thing, who's made so many mistakes that the customer comes into the building and chews her out in full view and earshot of everyone.

Rejection is part of the politics of the workplace, be it getting in the door, or working your way up the ladder.

Sanna, don't give up on your dreams, hon.  Finish your degree and keep plugging away at it.  You may have to take a job in something else until your break finally comes, but don't give up.

Don't give up on your dreams Sanna - not ever.
Have you time to get involved with any freebie journalism? Even things like the OUCH Newsletter are things you can put on your CV and if ever you want to submit anything for that it will be welcomed like sunshine through windows. Local newspapers, school magazines, church magazines - get your thinking cap on and you can do it and it's all experience!
lots of love and faith in you coming over

It is way to soon for you to give up now.  You have not yet even finished your training, and then the real training begins.  The world is full of stories of people who were told they could do something, or that their work was no good, that then proved to the world they had what it takes.  Og Mandino, one of my favorite authors, had his first book The Greatest Salesman in the World rejected ove 100 times.  It became a best seller and soldseveral million copies in over twenty languages.  BTW I would recommend it to you highly.  Walt Disney started his own company because he was told that people would not be interested in a talking mouse.  You know how that turned out.

There are many other examples, but right now you are to close to the hurt of the rejection.  Give yourself a little time, sleep on it, and then go DO IT.  Never give up your dream or when you are my age, doing whatever you have to do just to survive, you will live with regret.

Having something in your life you care enough to cry about is an important observation.

Others have said it.  You're young and just because something doesn't work out as you planned doesn't mean it won't work out at all . . . .

Keep plugging along.

Sanna if you want to be a journalist of any worth... you're going to have to grow a pair.

If you feel the need to make a difference in this world... with your gift, you'll have many obstacles to confront..... or you can throw it all away and be thrilled to join the herd of sheep.

It's your choice... get off of the cross and use the wood to build a bridge.

And, one more time - don't ever give up your dreams!

Keep plugging away doing what you have to do to put food on the table, but keep sending out that resume and above all, keep writing!  Write about anything and everything - good stuff, bad stuff, how to stuff, funny stuff, sexy stuff - send them off to everyone.  Why not send your resume to Cosmo, along with your story?  What have you got to lose?  Nothing.

Go for it.

Hugs

Thank you guys for your words of wisdom and the laughs. Grin

I decided at 12 that I want to be a journalist. Since then the first time I begun to question it was only when I started studying for my MA; which means that I already had 2 journalism degrees, 2 short courses (the kinds everyone can do for fun) and 3 stints of of work experience behind me.

And now, when I was not picked to be a trainee at Finland's biggest newspaper's own journalism school nor this TV job yesterday, it hit me where it hurts the most: my self esteem as a journalist. If I had not had those doubts beforehand about my future in journalism I would have simply be dissapointed for about 5 minutes and wondered what to do next. Now I begun to think I'm getting some sort of sign... Roll Eyes Oh me.

Well, yesterday is history and today is another day. The sun is shining nicely outside and I'm feeling a lot better! Thanks to you, thanks to my best supporter, who took me for a long walk last night. And to our crazy guinea pigs, who keep on doing these silly tricks with hay! laugh Seriously, one day I'm writing a novel with the title "Everything I needed to know in life I've learned from my guinea pigs"! Grin

Brewcrew, if you want to find me, you have to travel to Jyväskylä - that's about 280 km more from Helsinki... Wink

Writing is my dream, but to be a journalist... well, I have to get back at you about that one. I just thought that I would be a journalist first and then, having a day job at some magazine, I would write that great novel on my freetime and get published. One horoscope told me that I'll be writing a bestseller at 35, so I'm probably to young now... laugh

BTW, that macaroni casserole is just yummy! I'd post a pic, but we almost ate it all yesterday... Wink

Aguess I'll write some more resumes and CVs and send them around. Back here magazines and newspapers are lazy to reply, which is irritating. Hey, that's life!

PF days to all,
Sanna
