Has your mother been poisoned?

In light of the recent pet food disaster I'm curious how many elderly and homeless have been poisoned. Sadly in this country many people have to choose between meds, heat, and food... not to mention a home. I've not seen any related news articles linking the poisoned dog foods with the number of deaths of the elderly. What do you think? Is there anyone out there who cares? with warm regards, Tony

You have brought to light something that could very well be hidden. It is a true fact that many elderly are faced with that choice. I also think that this company just accidentely used too much of an ingredient (overdosed) that they always use as a preservative anyway. They do not list all ingredients used (and are not required to). I've heard that they accidentely allowed rat poison to get into the batch. If they told the truth, that it was an ingredient that they always use, the pet food industry would be in trouble. One ingredient that they actually do use and do not list it is a rubber product used as a preservative. I found this out when Polly (my dog) became allergic to certain foods (such as wheat, etc) and I did an extensive search on the ingredients in dog foods.

http://tinyurl.com/yuwhnt Sadly many people either do not care of the plight of the elderly in this country or are not aware there is a problem. The many deaths of the elderly caused by eating this tainted dog food will go unnoticed. I read somewhere once long ago that a nation can be judged by how they treat their elderly and young. We seem to be failing. with warm regards, Tony

you are right Tony, this is the country where the elderly live in retirement homes and are more children in orphanage... you can count how many old folks live with any of their grown up children...it's like when they are no longer productive..just put them away..I bet if it were legal to put them to sleep...some people would do that too just to save some money...very, very sad!

I thought of this too but my guess is that dog food is pretty damned expensive now. Not worth it. Also, humans are different. I bet that we can tolerate more crap than our furry type friends. Look at the residue we consume every day at fastfood troughs. Something to consider but not likely....still.. Charlie

Tony, I understand your intention with this post but, I would shovel horse shit for a living before I would let my Mother or any other Family member eat pet food. Maybe the post topic could have been worded a little different. K? Just a thought. Jimmers

Thanks, Tony, for caring. I'm 76 years old, and except for a little help from my son, I might be eating dog food. I worked until I was 67 but then had to stop. It's hard being old because in a youth-obsessed society, you're invisible to others, or if not invisible, then sometimes scorned. Barbara

You know whats sad about our current society ? Its all about money, its all about how much material a person has. Companies, employers are too busy looking after their own bottom line to care about the human beings that work for them. In some places, you cant even get a horse shit shovelling job because its too expensive to hire someone, what with all the superannuation and workers compensation insurance and medical insurance, so on and so forth for an employee. We can prolong life but we are not able to improve quality of life. Just feel like venting today .... Annette

I'm in about the same boat as "writer". Worked until I was 69 and quit due to a heart condition. Raised three little kids by myself. Never asked anyone for help. I'm looking for part-time work but a look in the mirror tells me why I'm "overqualified" and can't find a job. About to lose my home because I can't pay the real estate taxes this year, and the phone, electric, car and car insurance are one month behind (for the first time). After working for 54 years, who'd have thought I'd be in this situation today? Health problems can wipe you out in just a few months. I've eliminated three of my more expensive medications, like TriCor at $129.99 per month, but don't dare let go of the heart meds. With just about enough food in the house for two more days, I am at my wits end. I guess I have to give up my pride and independence and ask the kids for help. This is going to be a real burden on them. It's eating me up. This is why the elderly without kids eat animal food, and even that is becoming too expensive.

| My folks raised three of us on Air Force Enlisted wages for the first 20 years until pops got out and got his degree. He then went into the aerospace field as an engineer for Martin Marrietta where he was forced to retire in his 50's. less than 20 years later he has all his kids anywhere from a few feet away to just a few miles to make sure his possible final months are the best they can be.

Sound like a lot of middle class peoplel got their head in the sand. I have worked at Krogers in Atlanta and nuff old people would buy tins and tins of cat food. I have seen many open it up outside the store and start eating. A lot of people have no family to take care of them. Think of Hurricaine Katrina. It could not come at a worse time. It came at the end of the month before people got they checks. They were broke literally and had not even 10>00 to get gas and hightail out of there. Impossible you say. I was one of them and I was working all my life never on welfare. I was the working poor with no insurance living the American Nightmare. So don't tell me people don't eat pet food. Plenty do.

OMG... I've got 5 dogs and I feed them science diet. Fortunately though I only use dry food. That shit's not cheap. And pretty much all the foods recalled are the most premium brands. They could get a happy meal cheaper than a can of most of those brands. I'm sure their all fat and happy with a can of purina in front of them.

I was always told the best dog foods were the ones that had the 1st ingredient of meat. That is why I buy Iams myself. (the dry kind) It's pricey, but when you pay a lot of money for a dog, you want to make sure they get the best, kwim? That is definately awful about the elderly. I understand that happens and am very saddened by it.

| The cost of decent dog food is still cheaper than the vet bill. I go with Science Diet. (And tell your mothers to keep their mits out of my 40 lb. bag)

I must be missing something. How much does pet food cost? Some of it is atrociously expensive but I thought most of it would be comparable. Am I wrong? Quote:After working for 54 years, who'd have thought I'd be in this situation today? Health problems can wipe you out in just a few months. | I live pretty close too and had to get a deal from GlaxoSmithKline. One of the meds I take is a $332 monthly prescription. They are supplying it for a year....don't get me wrong though. All drug companies are still evil. They have a long long way to go. It's worth a try to get some help with the drugs. The places to write and forms can be found on line. Good luck and try to get some drug samples from your doctor. I got quite a cache this year. I've spent a lot of time with the county and New York State, and so far I've been able to hang on. I have similar tax problems. I'm alone which makes it easier, I guess. Charlie

| Well, at Petco, I paid something like $11 for a 3lb bag of Iams. I would have gone to Walmart and paid cheaper, but I get sick of shopping there sometimes.

While the Doc's kid and I swabbed out the kennels, we tried dry food. Big Red was horrible stuff. The Mackerel was okay that we mixed with the puddy tat food. That was people food though. You don't wanna know what we did with the dog food bags..... Charlie
