Superman has nothing on Collin County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Hatch. While Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound and is faster than a speeding bullet, Hatch has proved himself to be a lifesaver, not once, but twice. March 10, Deputy Hatch was working his afternoon shift when he was dispatched to a call for assistance on Lake Lavon. Hatch found a female clinging to an overturned kayak, yelling for help. After securing his weapon, Hatch found a flotation device and secured it to his body. He then waded into the cold water and swam approximately 200 yards into Lake Lavon to help Judy Henderson of Farmersville, who was clinging to a kayak. Members of the Farmersville Volunteer Fire Department were also dispatched to the scene to assist. Firefighters Michael Macomber and Michael Mild brought a rope out to the shoreline to bring to Hatch and Henderson. Macomber swam to Hatch and Henderson with the rope. Once Hatch made contact with Henderson, he pulled the her and the kayak to Macomber, who secured the rope to them. Firefighters Joey Ledbetter, Jake Hansen and Bradley Pollard then pulled the men and Henderson, along with the kayak, to the shoreline. Both Hatch and Henderson were treated by paramedics at the scene and released. This was the second time in a year that Hatch has been involved in a rescue. In 2006, he rescued a man from inside a burning residence. Hatch has been nominated by Deputy Christopher Perepiczka for the department’s Life Saving Award for this recent act of courage. But don’t ask Hatch to talk about himself or his acts of heroism. He is not the type to talk about them, according to co-workers, and Hatch declined interview requests. Major Chuck Ruckel, Hatch’s superior officer, said this is typical of Hatch. “He is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. He has absolutely no ego,” he said. “He is a big guy, about 6-foot-4. But under that big exterior is a heart of gold. He will do anything for you.” Hatch joined the sheriff’s office in January of 2003. He was named Deputy of the Year in 2005 and might become the first deputy to win the award twice. He has two life-saving rescues on his resume. “I have been around here for a lot longer and I don’t have any,” Ruckel joked. Hatch is stationed in the Lake Lavon/Farmersville/Nevada area. “He doesn’t say a lot, he just takes care of his business,” Ruckel said. “The business people in that area love him. He is a great representation of what the Collin County Sheriff’s Office is about." Sheriff Terry Box concurred. "Deputy Hatch is the example of what a Professional Law Enforcement Officer should be. He is intelligent, has a very good work ethic and is willing to go beyond the call of duty to help someone in need," he noted. "He truly is one of Collin County’s finest." And, Ruckel noted, he earns the respect of those he encounters on a daily basis. “You can be arrested by him and afterward, you will thank him for what he did," he explained. "He always tells me he is just here to do his job and he does a great job for us.” And that admiration goes both ways. “He tells me all the time that this is the finest place he has ever worked,” Ruckel added. Hatch is also being nominated for an award from the Army Corps of Engineers office based at Lake Lavon.
