About 12 years ago I visited the Humane Society Kennels looking for a soft, cuddly little kitten. I found little white bunches of fur, etc, but this domistic short haired tiger kept calling to me with his paws extended as far out of his cage as he could reach, just mewing and calling to me, repeatedly.
To make a long story a little shorter, I went home with this 12 week old kitten instead of the white fluff balls that were there sitting in a far corner just looking like the non-personalities that they appeared to be.
My new kitten slept with me, kneeding my arms in happy contentment. He woke around 4:00 am and ran his claws down the blinds, sat on the computer moniter and rocked making it creak, and pounced on me to wake me up. He climbed to the top cupboard, standing on his hind feet, and manipulated a magnetic latch to open the door, knock the cat food bag down out of the cupboard and onto the floor, where he and his pal Simon (a 7/8 Siamese cat of mine) and ate until they couldn't hold any more. They've been great pals. He and my Beagle Polly are great friends too. They play and chase but never hurt each other.
These antics go on and on. That's why I named him "Bonkers". He is Mr. Personality. He thinks he is a lap cat. He loved cuddling.
Yesterday I found a fissure (sp?) next to his anus. It looks very serious. I was sure it is cancer. I will spare you the rest of the descriptive symptoms. I called the Vet and he took him right in. The verdict.....cancer. I know that I am about to lose my Bonkers.
I can't put into words how torn up I am right now. I will keep him until I can see that he is in physical pain and then have him put down. I won't allow him to suffer. Right now he still rolls over for his tummy to be scratched and is able to climb to a high place to perch and sleep. He's eating well.
Excuse this long post, but I just can't believe that this is the end of Bonkie. This hurts like hell.

I really empathis Donna- I lost my Boris who I loved very much (a Russian Blue with 2 brain cells but the nicest cat ever)
He just disappeared one day and EVERY day I wonder what happened to him.
as Chuck says, at least you and Bonkers had a great life together and were lucky to have each other.
The best salve when you are ready is to make another unwanted cat happy again.

 Oh Ms Donna, My Heart goes out to you, I know you must have such an attachment after such a long time! As bad as it feels right now, I am sure after the pain subsides you will see there must have been a reason Bonkier was stricken with this now.
You should pay tribute to him with one of your art cells you make! then he can live on forever!
I think this is the very reason I am not a pet person, its just too hard to let them go when the time comes! I love animals, just dont want to get attached to any, the people in my life are hard enough to lose!
Take solace in the fact that he could not have been loved by a more wonderful person! call me if you need to talk My Friend! John

The trouble with pets is their lives are just too short. One thing I do know though is that you'll remember all the fun and not the pain. Keep making memories while you can Donna, it sounds like he still has a high quality of life - and he'll always be with you when you think of him

Donna.... This just makes my heart ache. Sorry that you and your Bonkers have come to this sad part of your journey together. There never seems to be a reward for the grief. I'll keep you and Bonkers in my thoughts and prayers.

Aw Donna, I'm sorry to hear this. It is hard to lose a pet. They do become family when they're loved and it hurts to see them in pain of any kind.

Gil and I held Buddy in our arms while he slipped away last week. After 11 years, it is hard to say goodbye, but he, too, had cancer. We had to help him.
Buddy was very much like Bonkers. He just showed up one day as a road crew arrived to pour asphalt into a hole in our street. This lil grey/white thing danced around the road crew's legs. I just knew he belonged to them, but, eventually, the truck left, and the cat watched forelornly as the truck drove off. He ended up in our basement-and, eventually into Gil's cozy chair...and our hearts.
I think we are amazing creatures ourselves, we set ourselves up to love these creatures, knowing we will lose them long before we are ready to say goodbye.
We've gone from 5 cats to 3, and I know all our babies are getting old.
Donna, my sympathy, really. If we were closer, we could cry on each other's shoulders. As it is, I agree, it's somehow comforting to know others are as vulnerable to some soft fur and a contented purr as I am.

I'm so sorry, Donna. Last September we lost our beloved "Tuffy" I woke up to hear this pitiful crying ,he as dragging his hind legs and biting himself trying to feel it. .I took him to the vet and he said it was a blood clot and that although theres a surgery he has only done it 4 times with no success.so I had my tuffy boy put to sleep .It was hard but there was no other choice.
Tuffy belonged to our good friend Gayle .when she passed away her husband just didn't have the heart to keep both cats so we adopted Tuffy.We already had our cat peppermint but they got along great.The funny thing is he was no where near tuff ,he was the sweetest ,gentlest most loving cat.He would hide most of the time if anyone he didn't know came in.Heck the first month he was with us he was in my closet or under my bed. Cathi, I'm sorry about Buddy.

After hearing these stories about our pets, I guess our pets lived pretty darned good lives with people who really loved and took such good care of them. It's just too bad that their lives are so short.
I've been showering Bonkers with attention and special foods (ground turkey, fish and other good stuff that I'm cooking for him) and he's lovin' it. He had started slowing down on the amount he normally eats, so what he does eat is at least tasty.
Thank you all over and over again for your thoughts and concern. It does a heart good to share and to be understood.

While I am not a cat person I understand your pain. I watched my dog get run over when I was a kid, and didn't want another pet for years. The loss of a pet is often harder than the loss of a friend. They are just that much closer. Enjoy what time you have left and make him as comfortable as you can. He already knows he is loved.
