Clusters in the local/national news

The following was on our local news station yesterday. I am sure it was a national item, but just thought I would share it with anyone who did not see it. Mama Weezer (National-NBC) April 14, 2006 - For many of us an aspirin will take care of a headache, but there are thousands of people living with debilitating head pain that may be misdiagnosed as a migraine. It's a different type of headache that still has that deep, intense pain, but it's called a cluster headache. Jeff Towery thought he suffered from migraines at first, "It makes you very, very scared. Because you're hurt so bad, you get dizzy with it. It bothers your eyes. It messes with your vision." It took him a decade of doctor visits, even hospital stays before he says he got the right diagnosis at Duke University Medical Center's Pain Management Clinic. Pain specialist Dr. Veeraindar Goli says, "Cluster headaches, in general, are under-diagnosed." Dr. Goli says cluster headaches are far less common, about 70 cases per 100,000 sufferers. But he sees a fair number of patients like Jeff who need help, "There's a tendency for cluster headache patients to be clubbed under migraine headaches." Cluster headaches differ from migraines. Cluster headaches come on suddenly and are short-lived. But it recurs in bouts, hence the name cluster. Dr. Goli talks about the recurrence, "Happens every day, two-to-three times a day for four-to-six or four-to-eight weeks." Jeff's last attack was just a few days ago. His medicine relieves enough of the pain so he can function, "For the first time in my life, I feel like we're starting to get to the point where you can maintain a somewhat normal lifestyle." Dr. Goli says there are ways to treat cluster headaches if caught early enough. One key for a proper diagnosis is to keep a diary of your head pain. Dr. Goli suggests, "Write down the attacks, how long they last, and the nature of the attack and take it to your doctor." Towery advises other sufferers, "Don't be ashamed, don't be afraid. Keep your diary and keep your head up. There's help out there, just be willing to go get it." The pain of a cluster headache is described as a jolt of lightning, and can last up to two hours. Triggers are smoking, alcohol and believe it or not, relaxation. Posted 5:23pm by Chantelle Janelle
