Anyone wanna go PIG hunting?

Apparently, along with a lot of deer on our land we are blessed with WILD HOGS. Bunches of them.... My son sets up a camera to take pics of the deer. Sunday when he went to get it - all that was on it was the hogs -- Big ONES! While he was out of the truck retreiving his camera a couple walked up to supervise. His wife was screaming at him, but dear old Buddy didn't hear her and just went on his merry way. I think she's still shaking. For years we've had "poachers" hunting the darn things, but this year they just didn't come around and I wouldn't even get mad if they did. I'm scared of these things and worry about Caleb going down in the woods (especially now that we know they're there). Anyone wanna go hunting -- it's open season on hogs... Hugs BD

Guess where my hubby, his uncle, cousin and brother are going this year? YUP! To TX to kill a boar. My brother in law won a hunt from the Whitetails Unltd. national banquet a couple weeks ago (we all worked for it). Jesse had to pay $300, I wish I woulda known you needed them killed because I would have sent him by you!

No pigs here, but Brian did hit a deer a week and a half ago. $2200 worth of damage. He only hit 1 out of 3 that were standing in the road, so he's pretty lucky. And he's fine, and the car wouldn't have that much damage, but the radiator busted. He now has a pimped out red Dodge Durango for a rental car. He's excited about that.

Mel, When are they coming to TX? and where are they going to hunt? It might not be too far from here. Hell, I'll feed and shelter them and even help them clean the darn things..... That's how bad I want to get rid of them. I'm not afraid of many things but these things scare the "you know what" out of me. I'm afraid that Caleb will wander off down in the woods and my "vicious" guard dog will run at the first sight of trouble (70 pounds of "coward". Seriously, let me know if they're going to be anywhere around here. Hugs BD

Barbara, it's in Crystal City and they'll be going sometime in Sept. Not soon enough for ya, but if you still have a problem with them come August, Jesse had a glint in his eye when I told him what you said.

My cousin Hank lives in Hawaii, on Hilo, in fact. he has a 4-5 ft wall around his property- not to keep out the bad guys, but to keep out the hogs! He had actually developed a trap for them and they use it all over his neighborhood. They are such a nuisance. Of course, when I asked him to join us for Easter, he asked if we'd be serving ham........he's pretty sick of ham.......we'll have steak! This seems an appropriate time for another Cathy to pop her head in......... "Any body wanna buy a PIGGGG?" Sheesh! I can't even remember the joke, now.......but I'm certain she does! Cathi

Mel, I don't know where Crystal City is (there's a couple of towns I haven't heard of in Texas) but if he wants to come early - we'll still have a crop of hogs here. They're multiplying ..... And Gator -- let's take up a collection and get you a freezer -- you're not that far away. Nice weekend outing - and take a pig home... Hugs BD

Andrew, yes, the meat from wild hogs could be dry cured just like the meat from domesticated stock. The problem is the temperature. It's already reaching the 70's and 80's around here. When I was growing up, we always butchered our hogs in the winter so the meat could cure in a cool, dry place. Less chance for infestation from bugs and such. The more I think about Steve's post, the more I like the thought of a big Meet & Greet with a pig roast as it's main event. Nothing better than standing/sitting around with a bunch of friends and family, swapping lies stories, drinking beer (or the beverage of your choice), music playing in the background and poking at the fire while the pig cooks. If enough people showed up it could be a big Fais Do-do. What y'all tink 'bout dat? Barb, Jane had an idea. Are there any institutions around where you live, like homeless shelters, orphanages, nursing homes, etc that might take the meat and use it for their residents? If so, maybe you could get someone that processes meats to donate the labor and the hunt could help out lots of people. You get rid of the pigs and people who might not otherwise have good meat to eat will.

Gator, that's a good idea. I'll see if there's a place to take the meat. And the Meet and Greet idea was great. Ya'll come to Red Hill, kill the damn pig, dig a hole and we'll roast the darn thing. I'll make the tater salad and baked beans to go with it and we're so far out in the country that we can drink all the beer we want and not bother anyone. Hugs BD
