when stuck in snow conditions like those seen in various photos posted here? i'd image that power outages would be a regular occurance so you'd be stuck playing charades??

Despite brew's self-deprecating humor, it's amusing to be "snowbound" for about 1/2 a day. Then it gets old - fast. Power is never a problem since we have a generator (like Jonny's which explains my big ass . . . ) and a fireplace should the need arise. We've not lost power during a storm for years. We drink a lot of coffee, watch tv, and hang out here on CH. And make sure we have gas for the snowblower and that the boots and mittens are dry. Food isn't a problem (again, big ass) but if it were the grocery is only 2 miles away and we have 2 4-wheel drive vehicles. I've never been in a storm I couldn't drive in, but most I choose not to if possible. Now Helen, unhand my husband!

I still go to work. It's been snow or flurries for 4 days snow. Since Wed night. Helen, you gotta be feeling much better to be thinking what your thinking..thats great news. My dream snow day at this point in my life would consist of lots of candles, yes even during the day...Lots of vanilla/cinnamon coffee ...and then lots of wine once it's beer:30 and a book I found at the retired teachers book sale that I read over 20 years ago and I couldn't put it down then, and now I get the chance to re-read it. (I think this stroke of luck is telling me I need to take a 4 day weekend and lock the damn door and shut off the phones and unplug the computer....) Yeeeeeeeeeah right....

Don't worry Pat, I did say it wouldn't be me LOL MacMuz, what's wrong with what I said? I'm a born again angel didn't you know?! So Pegg, whats the book? You know me and books! Not altogether sure that I could face booze yet but I'll join you in your wine with a G&T to test it! You know what though? After having been to CH conventions a snow day/weekend wouldn't even be noticeable at one of them would it? With all that incredible company who would even notice the weather?!

Actually, except for the area south and east of Lake Ontario in New York State...something betweeen 100 and 150 inches of snow or so, not much else in New York came to a stop. Syracuse, NY is used to it and so are we in Jamestown, NY. It takes a lot to stop things here. We have ridiculous plowing equipment here. To the south, it's another matter. Jonny can tell you the same. We had 90 minutes of power outage but it wasn't due to the storm. I donned my L. L. Bean jacket and sat in my recliner listening to the radio. Charades isn't the same and porn is out until the damned power returns Charlie

We don't get that much snow here, so we don't really get "snowbound" that often. I think I've seen more ice storms than snow storms here. Either way, the house we live in is about 7 miles out in the country and is ALL electric. Everything stops when the power goes out - water, heat, cooking - everything. The local electric cooperative is pretty bad. We get as many outages on warm and sunny days as we do on ice and snowy days - almost daily and sometimes multiple times per day. (which is why I have a UPS on every computer) Mostly they are a few seconds to a few minutes and are just annoying, but we do have the odd, several hours long outage. The only time we had an outage of any consequence here, we farmed the kids out to friends in town and Jane and I spent about 3 days huddling and cuddling until the power came back on. The only pipes that froze, and miraculously did not burst, were the ones in the well house that were above ground. Once the power was restored, I had to take a torch out there and thaw them out and we brought the kids home. Thankfully, this has only happened once in 6 years of living here. There are a lot of people, especially in Eastern and Northeastern Oklahoma, who have had it much worse.

My current house is right on the edge of town. I am right on the line that the power company considers 'out of town'. Thus I am on rural power. During this winters ice storms we had some fairly long outages... a day or so. Across the rest of the year we have at least one or two 12 hour outages and a number of 2-3 hours outages. So what is it like? Pretty fun, really. Like camping without leaving the house. We have a wood burner, so that keeps us toasty. We light a shitload of candles, which my daughter instantly lights, even if the power flickers. I do plan to pick up a generator this year. For an extended outage I can use a smallish generator to power my instant hot water heaters and furnances, which are natural gas powered... and the gas tends to never experience an outage. Typically the condition that triggered the outage is more of a concern than the outage itself. For example... the ice storm of a few months ago sucked hard. Limbs hitting the house and such.
