Ever lose a job due to CH?

I got a call the other day that truely hurt me to the very core.
I have worked for a landscape company for the last 7 years. Since starting there, I have become the person in charge of all aspects of our landscape maintenance program except the clerical portion. I have worked my ASS off to earn the reputation of being the best in the business for the area. And then....
Last summer I was hit with a CH cycle lasting most summer and fall. My cycle is on about an 18 month cycle, so every 3 years or so, it hits in the summer, alternating between summer and winter. Since I'm laid off during the long winter here in Michigan, my winter cycles don't affect my work. But when the summertime cycle hits, it can seriously affect my ability to work....
So... Back to the phone call...
My boss of 7 years, who has treated me like a son the whole time, calls me on friday (2-23). He explains how he has been wrestling around with this thought all winter long, and is dreading this conversation. Due to my poor performance last year caused by my CH, he had to let me go. I could tell he was very reluctant to do this, but it still hurt. I was crushed! I was even expected to take over for him when he retired in a couple of years, and now this.
I just feel like CH has ruined my life sometimes. I know my kids hate it. We usually do a lot of fun stuff in the summer, and last year were unable to.(Oh.. I'm almost divorced with joint custody of them..I have them a full half the time.) Now I lost the job I loved to my CH. The job I was planning on making my career. It even had a profound effect on my marriage when we were together!
It just sucks!!
I guess I just wanted to know if anybody else has ever felt this way, or has ever lost a job as a direct result of them having CH's.
ANYWAY..... Take care everybody, and PFDAN to all!

No. Unlike you, I am a desk jockey in an office with a door. My managers over the last 19 years have never been domiciled in the same city as me. They have all been very understanding and realize that there are times when I must shut my door, turn on the O2 bottle, and ride it out.

Also, at our company, each year every employee is required to fill out a survey of about 30 questions, the first ten of which pertain directly to your immediate manager. One of the questions is "My manager listens to my concerns." They are all then given a "Leadership score" (based on those first 10 questions) and this becomes part of their performance review. Too low of a score two years in a row can get you shown the door.

No, I have been very fortunate that way. I'm sorry it hasn't worked out as well for you.

That sucks that you lost your job!  You arent the first one I've heard that happen to..

but why did he wait all winter long to tell you?  THAT"S just SHITTY in my opinion!  You could have gotten another job by now while he "wrestled" with it.   Geesh!

Better things will come your way, I"m sure of it!

Their loss.
First, make sure you have the prevents and aborts needed to function, even at work.  Make CH a 100% non-issue.

Then... start having fun.
You know EVERYTHING about your former company's book of business.  Cost basis, which clients rock, which clients suck, etc.
You are probably on a first name basis with all of your former company's better clients.

And all that is now the core asset you will use with your new employer.
- Go to the competition.
- Name your package.
- Imply that you are will strive to bring 70% of your better clients along with you.
- Creatively fib about why you were let go... 'Former company gave my promotion to a relative'... 'Former company's books are in such bad shape that they could not afford to keep me'... 'Had words with the bosses semi-retarded little brother, who he keeps on the payroll'... you know the game... take some half-truth and make it the reason you were ditched.  All very typical small-business personnel conflicts.

/it is a game
//skills are an asset
///knowledge of your former employers business is a bigger asset

Love the advice Lobster!
I have had a few offers from other companies over the last couple of years. I just might have to take that advice.
I do have several customers who wouldn't let anybody else do their work, and they might just follow me wherever I go. I'm even considering trying to start up on my own! Hell, I've had 10 years experience all together...

Thanks for your advice!!

My husband lost his job last year when the cycle started and he couldnt work for more than 6 months. It was really tough for him and it did get him down for quite a while.

Now we are trying to restart and rebuild by trying to go for a small business that he can run at home in his own time.

Keep your chin up and keep trying.

Life goes on.

All the best wishes to you.

Well, I'm gonna do it!
I'm currently working on a business plan to start up my own business! I have an older sister who is both fairly wealthy and well connected, who insists I go through with it and she is backing me 100%. With her connections and mine, there should be no problem making this a success.
I am very sorry to hear about everybody else who has lost a job due to CH. I hope everything works out well, for all of us, as we pick ourselves up, and start again!

PFDAN to all, and best wishes!

I've been in business for 13 years and recommend it to most (but not all).
It is nice when you know you work in a cluster sensitive environment.
