Hi Guys...
Just wanted to post an update since i've been sorta MIA for a while. I've been getting such wonderful pm's and calls from some of you with comforting and encouraging words. Thank you so much...it means more to me than you'll ever know.
My sister had surgery on her neck, only to land back in the hospital 3 days later in a coma - infection in her spine. She's still in ICU, but out of her coma, though she's still in the danger zone...platelets are very low among other hematology problems, potassium and there's some concerns regarding her large intestine. She's doing better though, speaking, eating soft foods, and hanging on. Sometimes her will to live amazes me.
I have all 3 kids now...I finally took them to see her yesterday. She kept asking to see them. Today, she's doing much better. I think seeing them gave her even more of a will to hang on. Still, I know that even if she makes it out, her body is consumed with cancer and I don't know how long she'll be with us. I'm still in the process of becoming legal guardianship of the kids and taking care of other legal matters while I run back and forth to the hospital as i'm her proxy.
The kids saw the blood, plasma, platelets they were giving her and have decided to be dedicated blood donors all of their lives - which made me very proud.
I had a heart to heart with my sister about so many things. I finally have peace.
The only thing that makes my heart ache is seeing her kids suffer.
Walking through the halls of ICU and seeing so many barely hanging on reminds me how fragile life is.
Thanks again to everyone who has pm'd me and called me. I'm sorry for not returning calls, but will when I can.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this, and I'm praying for your sister and for her children and all of you! This was hard to read after spending all night worrying about my mom's best friend, who is family to us, who is probably going to die sometime in the next week, also from cancer. She has 3 boys - and I cannot even imagine what those kids are going through. They are lucky to have their loving father, just as your sister's kids are lucky to have you.
You are one very special person, and Jimi is right - you will be rewarded for all the good you do for everybody else. Prayers are going up.....

I'm glad you and your sister have had time to talk, thats a real blessing and I hope you and the kids and your sister will be able to spend as much time together as possible making memories for all of you.
Whatever happens in the long run, I hope there can be a minimum of pain and a maximum of giggles for all of you

It's always the hardest to take time for yourself at these moments in life. Don't forget to take a little care of YOU.
While it's not you in the hospital bed, it's you who needs extra strength to remain strong for those around you. Whatever you do to relax or blow off steam, make sure there's time in the day for it. Even if it's just coming here to update us.

After spending 2 years in ICU watching Sandy slowly lose her grip on life... my heart goes out to you Langa. Sandy left 3 kids as well. I still don't understand... perhaps I never will. You are an amazing person.

Langa - Glad you were able to talk with your sister and find some peace -- that is a blessing in and of itself! Life is a fleeting / fragile thing and I'm agreeing with Helen on maximizing the giggles
