TIJUANA, Mexico -- In Tijuana, police officers are now defending themselves with slingshots.
The police department has issued about 60 slingshots and bags of ballbearings to officers still on patrol.
Two weeks ago, Mexico's president Felipe Calderon sent more than 3,000 soldiers and federal police to Tijuana to hunt down drug gangs.
In the process of doing that, police officers were ordered to turn in their guns amid allegations some of them were helping drug traffickers.

During the San Diego meet n greet, I took a side trip down to Ensenada. Wasn't a cop in sight but there were plenty of Federalies at the toll stations. They were randomly searching cars while their compadres kept their AR-15s trained on the occupants. Even hit a search checkpoint on the road just north of Ensenada. It appeared only cars with Mexicans were being searched. Wondered why but this explains it.

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Authorities on Wednesday announced the capture of a purported drug cartel leader, the first major drug arrest under the administration of President Felipe Calderon, who has pledged a nationwide war against the drug trade.
