Damn Ticks !

JD has been a little strange the last week, tired, and complaining of his feet falling to sleep. For JD to be tired is not like him. He has been asking to go to bed early. That is really not like him. Yesterday we found a tick on his head right at the crown. It had feed by the size of it. I don't know how we missed it when we washed his hair. He has moles in his head and I guess I thought that was what it was.
This morning we woke up to him throwing up and his neck hurtting. He also has a sore throat. Deveny isn't taking any chances she took him to the hospital here in town.

You all be careful if you live in the woods or have pets. Those ticks are hard to kill. We treat the yard, but they fall off the trees. We have tick collars on our animal but they still bite the dogs.

How can you fight these ticks, not much kills them. I hope the doctors treat him for lime disease weather he has it or not. oral antibiotics is what they treat it with. We did look the tick up on the internet and it was a deer tick. Deveny took the picture with her, plus what the treatment says. They say Doctors are not treatingt it with enough antibotics that it should be given for four weeks not two or three as soon as the tick is found. The symptoms are many, so its hard for doctors to know unless someone remembers being bit and even then doctors are not treating people for it.

Elaine,
Sorry to hear about JD, hope he checks out OK,I had lymes a number of years ago from a tick that got me on the leg whilst out walking the dog in a forest.  I was treated with Antibiotics for a month after they found it.  It generally shows as a ring, bright red, with a rash in the middle that spreads. The antibiotics sorted things out but made be feel ill for several weeks.  I keep my trousers tucked into my socks now and cover my head whilst any where there may me ticks, then check very thoroughly when you get out of the woods.  Hope JD get on fine         Cheers Roy

Elaine-

Treat all animals you might have with Front Line and upon coming home from areas with ticks examine all skin surfaces including scalp, waistband area, under arms, ankles etc.  Any rashes on the skin should be seen by a doctor.  Sorry JD is not feeling good.

Deveny just called, the doctor thinks its just a sore throat no signs of strep. But because he was bite by the tick, they are giving him antibotics for a month, just to be safe. It will help the sore throat also.

Lady E--
Hope your little guy is feeling better soon! We use Revolution on our dog and haven't had any problems with ticks or fleas. Now if they could just develop something like that for our 2 legged critters......
Modified to add, I hope your daughter got home to Mi OK the other day. Take care.

We used Frontline and our dog started haveing seasures. Then we tried advanage and it did the same thing. Since we stopped using them she has been ok. What we do is treat the yard . Its hard to find somthiing that doesn't hurt the dog or JD to treat the yard with.
I have never used Revolution I will check it out.

My daughter got home yesterday. She stopped over half way and rented a room for the night. She is fine I forgot to post.

Constantly a problem here and something we are always looking out.  Just removed one from the back of my neck last weekend (much larger wood tick not a deer tick).  Mild weather at this time of the year seems to increase tick activity.

Frontline for the animals and Deet for kids and adults  keeps these critters at bay.  (I was hunting and didn't want anything with a smell on me).

The rash of Lyme disease is not something that everyone gets.  My understanding is that multiple blood tests for Lyme disease should be done before ruling out the possibility of having it.  Make sure your son has been specifically tested for Lyme disease and re-tested 7 to 10 days later.

My daughters first test came back negative but the second was positive and treatment began immediately.  Treating Lyme disease early is important to avoid a number of permanent problems it can cause.

Would the owner of the propane torch, egg beater, pipe expander and vise grips please claim these items. They're lodged in my head and I need the space.

When you bathe your dogs, put some 20 Mule team Borax in the water. Mop your floors with it also. (If you have carpet, sprinkle it on before you vaccum - let stand a while (overnight usually) then vaccum).

You said you treat your yard -- what do you treat it with. Bleach works pretty good to get rid of everything and won't hurt the animals or kids.

Sorry JD is feeling poorly. Hope he's back to himself soon.

I am so mad at Ted.  He shot a buck with 8 points and wants to mount it.  Problem is we have to get all the deer ticks off of it.  He has the head in 2 black garbage bags sitting in a snow pile on top of our picnic table out back where the deer goes.  He is hoping to kill/freeze the ticks but I think he is going to have to burn them off.  There are all balled together at the tip of one or two of the antlers.  YUK!  I don't want to deal with it but I don't want my dog getting bit by a deer tick or two.  Did I say I was mad at Ted?!  lol  men and there hobbies.

Glad to hear that JD is ok.

Barbara thanks didn't know treating the yard with bleach would help.  I use seven dust in the yard, lots of it.  We have never had a problem with fleas but have a big problem with ticks.
JD is a lot better, they gave him enough antibotics that if the tick did infect him it would kill the infection. So we don't have to worry any more. We had a good doctor that did not want to wait the two or three weeks to test to see if he was infected. I read where thats the right thing to do.

Karla YUCK ! They should fall off if they can't feed.
