Violin Question ...

Ok, family … here is another TOTALLY off subject request ..
My oldest daughter (not the Warden) has decided she wants a violin, and to learn how to play it … The problem is, I have no idea of what to look for … I saw some on ebay for only $30.00!!!! Are they trash?? I was thinking I would do well to get one for less than $100.00.
What should I expect to pay?? Obviously, I am not looking in the range of a Stradivarius … But I don’t want piece of shit either …
There must be SOMEONE that has knowledge about what I want …

You might do what I did, can save you some money in the long run if you Blindly buy one, call the Head Music teacher at her school and ask for the accepted brands, some of the one's they auctiion off on UBID.com are cheap but the school had criteria for certain brands that are good enough to produce the consistant sounds that the instrument needs to produce. Good Luck. I have found an occassional good violin in pawn shops, but the old adage "You get what you pay for" is especially true here! Pappy

I won't buy anything unless I can play it first. The bad part about buying an instrument from eBay is the same as buying a car from eBay - you can't test-drive it first.
Check out the pawn shops. They usually have Violins pretty cheap, and you can check it out before forking out the cash.
I know some people who have bought guitars on eBay. Some got incredible deals on sweet axes, and some paid good money for a baseball bat transformed into a guitar neck (at least they play like it).

Seriously, Chuck - Have her go to a music store, one that rents out insturments to students. Maybe she can take someone who knows a little more than she does about what to look for. I wouldn't commit to buying anything at this point. Rent one until she either a) discovers that she doesn't want to play anymore (happens a lot), or b) discovers that she wants a better instrument. Either way you're only out a couple months' rent (probably $50-80 per month).

Mine cost about 250.00
Why not go to a reputable music store, figure out what you want to spend, and buy a gift certificate for her to pick out what FEELS and SOUNDS good to her because that is important.

I'll admit that I don't have a lot of knowledge about violins, but I will offer a word or two of advice!
My first clarinet was an instrument that my aunt had used growing up, had sat for years in a closet until I was at the age where I could start learning an instrument in school (besides piano!) and my grandfather gave me the clarinet. I played on it straight through a large part of high school, but once I began taking lessons, my clarinet teacher was so frustrated by the instrument - because it really was of not so great quality. He told my mom and I that the quality of the instrument was holding me back from being able to advance in my studies. That's completely true - plus I learned a lot of bad habits adjusting for a less-than-ideal instrument. (I can't bring myself to say "bad" instrument since it was a gift from my grandfather, who is no longer alive!)
When I got my yamaha intermediate-level clarinet, it did make all the difference in the world! Same thing with respect to pianos... The piano my family has always owned, I jokingly refer to as "driftwood with keys." I had a hard time getting used to a quality piano when I went off to college.
So the point is, don't buy junk just to save money. (Unless you think she's not serious about the whole concept...) In the end, it makes it a lot harder to learn how to play the instrument. Not saying you have to buy the strad, but I wouldn't buy something on ebay for $30.....that sounds a bit too good to be true - you'd probably get something dilapidated and falling apart or else some other serious flaw for a violin to be going for that price.
I also like what someone said above about how buying a violin from ebay is like buying a car from ebay. That's totally true. I would never purchase an instrument that I couldn't personally test out first - or at least have someone test out who I trusted to know the quality!
Good luck and hope you will also invest in a pair of earplugs for yourself! The beginning level of violin is a little...ehhh...rough on the ears!

Best to rent it until she decides that she likes the violin and is determined to continue with it long term. Most music school rents out instruments to students.
My older son Edwyn started out learning violin from school and we rented one from there. It was not an expensive one, suitable for beginners, yet it was worth $400. The music teacher said cheaper version isnt worth it in the long run. It cost us $30 a term ( 3 months ) to rent.
He decided that violin wasnt his kind of instrument and gave it up after 10 months. Thank God for that as my ears were really suffering. A violin in the hands of a beginner can be a torture device in every meaning of the word 
He now sticks to playing his piano ( not organ )
