Starting to put stuff together....

Made pies and fresh cranberries last night. (If you've never done fresh cranberries, give it a try. You'll never use the canned ones again.) Going to start on the turkey--we're doing a twelve-pounder, which is more than sufficient for the three of us. El and I baste with butter and crushed fresh rosemary--with a few dried juniper berries in the roasting pan. No stuffing inside (I'm a little leary of stuffing next to raw poultry.) But the stuffing is made a couple of days ahead, in a tradition with Liz's extended family, called the "stuffing party", where a large group gets together at Liz's sister's house and the adults drink martinis and argue, and the teenagers do whatever teenagers do, and everyone chops, dices, minces, mixes, and otherwise assembles the complicated ingredients of the "special stuffing" that comes down from the New Orleans matriarch of the family--who is celebrated and remembered throughout the evening, and in honor of whom many martinis are toasted . At the end, the massive heap of stuffing is distributed among all the family, who then make their woozy way home. Meanwhile, back at the ranch here today, the gravy will have fresh rosemary as well, and some sauted shiitake mushrooms mixed in. Mashed 'taters, of course. Peas with a little coriander, and baked yams. No one ever lets me make different desserts. They're adamant. Pumpkin pie, and hot apple crisp with whipped cream. No creativity allowed. No gooseberry pie, since I'm the only one who likes it....oh well. A good shiraz with dinner. Later on, Jack Daniels and I have an appointment for a bit of late-night sippin'. Along with some more turkey, probably. Hope you all enjoy your day as much as I will. Best wishes, George

Ah! The foreigners put on such airs Wearing the tangerine suits And their harlequin eyes. The pain they inspire Draws in harmonica melodies And the feathers of birds Which flame up at their touch. It all comes to light in the sheer Debonair. (Ellen)

Sounds wonderful George. I only eat cranberries that stay the shape of the can though. Charlie
