I know your joking, Bro and I apprciate that.

But, when I was ten years old I would not have had any thanksgiving if it was not for the church and their basket of food for many years.

no certainly not rich enough for that.wouldn't buy all that stuff even if I was.The girls are always grateful for what they get I am very lucky.No tv in their bedrooms either.we watch tv as a family or not at all.I'm not saying they wouldn't take all those fancy gifts if offered they are typical kids.I offer better alternatives that I can control a little bit.the video games we have plug right into the tv. some old atari games and sponge Bob,disney those types of games.$20.dollars apiece  the kids love them and no violance or bad language.I plan to stay the course with the girls as they get older.When they go to friends houses I tell the parents please no violent games or movies.Not to worry so far all the parents seem to have the same views I do so alls good.It's all in control and I don't care if "everyone els has them" My rules they will have their own someday when they have heir own families.

I know what your saying jonny. I grew up with only a mom and 5 kids. We didn't have a whole lot back then. A single present each is all we really ever expected.

One thing to remember is most families nowadays have both parents working and combined incomes easily exceeding 100g's. A couple hundred bucks isn't that much compared to when we grew up. Even though I agree, kids are alot more spoiled today that for sure.

Beats me Jonny but I have to say that I was a spoiled brat but dad never bought me an expensive toy unless he had more fun with it than I.

I know what your saying jonny, I grew up on a farm so toy's were not a option. We do not have children so it is a little unfair to say what we would let them have, but I am from old school and am proud it! Grin

I'm with you Jonny. Kids have entirely too much "junk" these days. Parents feel guilty (at least my kids do) for both working and not having "quality time" (PC) with the kids so the compensate with 'gifts' which the kids don't really appreciate.

Caleb is totally happy with a big empty box. I keep trying to tell the kids that, but they just don't listen. He'll play with a box for days (until Granny throws it out) and have a blast. The expensive toys he just destroys (he likes to take things apart to see WHY they work).

When I was 5, my parents got me a big doll (Susan) and I had that darn doll until I was grown and married  - well actually until my son was born - then I gave her away to a loving home.

We got ONE gift for Christmas from Santa and that was it. When I was 11, I got a neat RECORD player (had all three speeds). Had that thing until I was grown also.

The point is I REMEMBER the gifts I got and treasured them because we didn't get all that much. Everyone was poor back in the "old" days.

Fuzzy slippers are good - warm on cold nights.....

Awwwww for the good old days........

I agree with BarbaraD.  My hubby thinks- he/she who dies with the most toys wins.  He's a 36 year old kid.  He makes Christmas fun, in a kid-kind of way.  Johnny needs more toys, maybe you could come check out our rollercoaster in the back yard.

Nope, my kids don't get stuff like that either.. quite simply, where does it end?
One thing I do do every year is a Christmas Calendar where I plan out twelve months of treats, one per month and write them up. We went Karting one month last year, we went on a day trip to France, tickets to a horse show and so on. It spreads the cost and the fun and its good for all of us. Life is more about experiences than possessions for me and the sooner the lids learn that too the better.

Well, if it wer'nt for the fact I was born male, I would not have had a single toy to play with when I was young. laugh

I think parents use toys as babysitters.  There would be a whole lot less anti-social behavior if parents interacted with kids instead of shoving expensive toyo in front of them.  Kids would be a bunch smarter I think, too.

With all the gadgets kids get these days; in a year they are outdated and just have to have the next gizmo they see.  What a huge waste of money!

Some thoughts to ponder:

From Warren Buffet:  Your state of living does not equal your cost of living.  He lives here in Omaha and has lived in the same modest house for 48 years.  He has Billions.
Another of his quotes is: Give your children enough to do something, but not enough to do nothing.

To he whom much is given, much is expected.

Money is the very smallest part of wealth.

I am wealthy beyond my dreams, and we live paycheck to paycheck like most others.  The grass is not greener anywhere else than right here in my house and yard, with my family.  I am married to the man of my dreams, I have 3 phenomenal children who are just like every other kid and play "imagination" games in the street with the other kids in my neighborhood.  My  house is the gathering ground.  All the kids play at my house.  With broken dollar store guns and twigs from the tree;  They play with their basketballs, and footballs, and my yard is the worst looking in the neighborhood and I'm proud of it;  all the kids play on it, I take it as a symbol of pride;  I do not need to out do the smiths and jones.

I have a Christmas open house every year.  My home is open to everyone.  There is food beyond belief, and an atmosphere of true spirit of giving and love.  I can't 'create' it, it just happens.  No gifts are allowed.  As a child, open house was held every Christmas eve, and it was very expensive to provide food for an entire small town, because EVERYONE came.  One year, my mom stayed up all night sewing so we would have something to unwrap; another, when my brother and I were teens, she told us outright, there's no money for both Christmas open house and gifts, you are both teens, and you both know the meaning of money - which do you want?  Gifts on Christmas morning or open house?  We both unanimously and without a second thought chose the open house.  What are gifts on Christmas morning worth?  when you have not had anyone or any love and spirit of Christmas to enjoy them for?

My children are spoiled;  I admit to that.  They get 2 gifts from Santa, and they get about 3 gifts each from us.  However I have a split family.  I am divorced, and fortunate enough that my ex and his wife and his entire family are close friends with us.  So my 2 oldest children get Christmas with us, with their Dad, with 2 sets of grandparents and extended family.  If we didn't limit the gifts it would be horribly out of control.

My kids are more upset about not being here for the Christmas open house this year than anything they are asking for on their list.  I am actually having to hound the 12 and 14 year old to actually make a list of things wanted because the extended family needs ideas.  They have about 4 things each that they want.  All things they know are too expensive and they won't get, but they listed em anyway.

I am 38 years old, and I still believe in Santa Clause.  I have seen proof over my years.  My father was 58 when he died, and he still believed too.  That's because what Santa Clause means to this family, (who is not religious) has nothing to do with the presents under the tree.  He is the mystery and magic, the wonder and anticipation, the love and the sharing, toasting those who are no longer with us, providing for those who are not as fortunate; I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

Every year, my children choose a child we know some how some way to adopt for Christmas.  That child, receives a package from Santa Clause.  Not just for him/her, but a package of goodies for their entire family.  And not once, not ever, has a name or return address been on the gift.  I've never seen the faces or the reactions of our adopted Christmas kids, but I've been one;  Santa came to my door one year when my ex had been laid off work 4 weeks before Christmas;  We had no money for food let alone gifts.  On the 24th, the door bell rang;  There was Santa Clause, with 2 boxes;  One full of food, one full of brightly wrapped gifts with my children's names on them.  To this day I do not know who that person was;  He was Santa Clause;

So this year, stop and think about the many who are in a state of anxiety beyond belief wondering how they are going to pull a rabbit out of a hat for their kids for Christmas;  We have many here on our very own board.  This year, instead of giving your kids a big present, ask them if they would like to give a present to someone else, and not have that one - you'll be amazed at the charity of children and how readily they will give a gift away rather than have it themselves.

Sorry for the length, I have had some rather profound lessons of late;  If I can get just one person to stop and think on a bigger scale, to understand that giving heals the soul, that there is sooooooooo much more out there than one day a year where kids expect expensive toys;  then maybe my life has had some meaning after all;

One last thought - tell someone you love, that you love them, and make sure you are saying it like it's the last time they'll hear it;  You never know just when you won't have that chance again.  Life ends, all too soon, and all too unexpectedly;  so make sure someone you love knows, without question, that you love them.  That's the gift of Christmas;

That's cause for giving thanks.
