Kill me now. NY Times story: The military said on Friday that it planned to build a $125 million compound at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba where it hopes to hold war-crimes trials for terrorism suspects by the middle of next year. The compound, designed to accommodate as many as 1,200 people, would include dining areas, work spaces and sleeping accommodations for administrative personnel, lawyers, journalists and others involved in trials. It would create three courtrooms to allow for simultaneous trials, and a separate high-security area to house those on trial. “We need to build more courtrooms, and we want to do multiple trials,” said Lt. Cmdr. Chito Peppler, a Pentagon spokesman. The government hoped to begin construction as soon as possible to be ready for trials no later than July 1, Commander Peppler said. Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International U.S.A., described the proposed compound as “a permanent homage to its failed experiment in second-class justice.” The project, which has not yet been submitted for Congressional approval, represents one of the largest upgrades to the detention center since it began taking in detainees in January 2002. Plans for the compound are in a “presolicitation notice,” dated Nov. 3 and posted on the Internet for potential government contractors. It was first reported by The Miami Herald. Grrrrrrr. It's nice weather down there. A tent, some chain link fence, folding chairs, picnic benches and tables would work for me. Charlie

All I can say is WRITE, CALL or E-MAIL your newly elected REPRESENTATIVES. That's why they were elected -- to cut out some of this crap. $125 million??? If they've got the goods on the guys -- why do they need a "proper" courtroom? Let 'em sit in the folding chairs -- why does the "press" have to have "accomodations" - Let the lawyers see how the "other half lives" if they want to defend these guys. This is just one more WASTE of our tax money!!!!! Hugs BD

| A little comment on the project from hard-@ss character Colonel Nathan Jessup. "Truth. You can't handle the truth. They're ordering Play Station 3 for every room."

One of the largest portions of the money needed for this facility is to make it "politically acceptable" for the treatment of the detainees. This wll be like no POW camp ever before. Like in WWII some of the lace panty folks in the State Dept were so worried about the treatment of our prisoners of war they were brought to the US and housed in camps that were situated so as to be as like their normal environment as possible, and at tremendous cost to the US. The treatment our POW's got was far superior to what our convicts got in our jails and penitentiaries. I'm fed up with trying to be "politically correct" all the time. I think it is time we start to pay attention to OUR interests for a change, and the Washington Post and the New York and LA Times can move over there with the ones they support instead. That goes for CNN in spades! Jerry

They held the WWII trails in a GYM. It seemed to work out fine. And they didn't spend any $125 million on it. And WHY is the camp in Cuba? We don't even get along with them. Guess I missed that chapter.

| LOL. Just so you know, it was a New York Times reporter that wrote the story and put it on the front page. Without the Times, it's unlikely that we would have learned of it. Charlie

And if it had been a Democrat in the presidential office, the NY Times would not have even seen a need to report it, even at twice the cost. Hatred for Bush has made the media openly give up any pretense of objectivity. I do agree with you on this, Charlie: Quote:A tent, some chain link fence, folding chairs, picnic benches and tables would work for me. |
