who may be off work today in hono(u)r of Veteran's Day or Rememberance Day tomorrow,

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, stand silent for one minute and listen to this song and video and recite this poem.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918 )
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I'll raise a glass (or 3) to my fellow vets who never made it home.  To those that did, and to those that are still active.

Also a special toast to my son who has been property of the US Marines for the last 5 days.  I'm proud of you Nick!

I was thinking a lot today about my friends who are or would now have been 57 or 58 - my age group.  People I love  and loved, my friends and school mates.  I was thinking of the psychological and physical problems, the stress, the reentry into society and the problems in personal relationships, and the misisng people and damaged people and the brave courageous beutiful people. It's been a heavy day.

The Ode

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon and was published in London in The Winnowing Fan: Poems of the Great War in 1914. This verse, which became the Ode for the Returned and Services League, has been used in association with commemoration services in Australia since 1921.

Thank you for my freedom.

In Flanders' Fields inspired Moina Michael, a 49-year-old former University of Georgia professor, to mark the day forever by wearing a red poppy.

It also inspired her to write "We Shall Keep the Faith"

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.
We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.
And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

(Yes, I'm wearing a poppy.)
